I played and beat Gothic 3, should I try Gothic or Gothic 2 next?
Play gothic 1 and gothic 2 in order. There is a part of gothic 2 where you return to gothic 1's world and everything has changed. It would not be as cool if you havent played 1 first.

Steal anything not nailed down
Enemies don't respawn, keep that in mind when you're killing beasts that drop hunting loot early on (need training to take their trophies)
You get exp the first time you beat another human into unconsciousness, and access to their inventory while they're out

Proton GE. Gothic needs directmusic for...music but for some reason I couldn't install that for default Proton.

I think the right way would be to run `protontricks 65540 directmusic`, but you got it working with the GE fork so whatever. To be honest, the only time I ever attempted to use protontricks to fix sound, it only partially worked. It got the sound effects to play, but with a huge delay (literally about half a second), which was completely intolerable. So the game just went back onto my "maybe I'll reboot to Windows 7 if I really really want to play this" list.

What is the best mod to use when playing Gothic 1 in 2021? Last time I couldn't finish cause I used the openGL thing and after half-way trough it deleted all my saves... Easily one of the best games I have ever played though.

Most of its due to handtouched maps and details versus copy paste, Gothic 1 & 2 are magnitudes smaller but there's something to find in every nook and cranny, feels much larger as a result

It's great. Story and setting is really unique, world is full of detail to the point where even most modern vidya doesn't come close, sense of progression is second to none, there is no handholding and you'll probably love discovering all of those little interactions, things to do, ways to improve your situation. Just give yourself a second to understand the point of controls before hating on them. It's a really good system, you basically have one action button (ctrl), one modifier(shift), and four arrows, shift is for strafing, ctrl+arrows is handling every single possible interaction. G1 plays crazy good without using mouse at all because of that.

It's fun for a playthrough. Don't expect anything special out of the combat or story. The sequel is more of the same except it drags on forever.
I honestly prefer these older games in 4:3 at low resolutions
