WoW happened to the industry. Everyone just copied it instead of doing their own thing and it's nearly impossible to compete against a game with 19 years worth of content and QoL and it's been that way since the first WoW killers started to pop up. WoW had too much content, they couldn't compete.

Old school FFXI is still the peak of MMOs though.

      Yep. The good old days.

People were generally pretty good about getting reps or staying until they got there as you got higher up, because they didn't want to be blacklisted from groups.

2007 and the normie invasion of the internet happened. It doesn't matter how good or bad your MMO is, in the modern day the worst part of the genre is always, ALWAYS other players.

True. It’s so fricking weird going through a dungeon where nobody talks or does anything or god forbid someone might get their feelings hurt or interact with one another! People are so tense these days and I don’t understand it, something in the food maybe

so i think it's 2 things, 2 different mindsets that lead to the same outcome. the first are the people sick of social media, mmos chats are too social for them so they wanna just play the game without having to deal with people.

the second are the ones still super addicted to social media but other than ff14's commendation system, there's no upvotes or likes for them to get and those mostly go to the tank or healer anyway so there's no "reward" for them being social like on other sites and the risk is saying something that offends something and gets them banned so it's not worth it.

unless you have a game that demands people play nice and communicate to get things done, people aren't gonna do it. but mmos are going in the opposite direction, they're adding bots that players can play with so they don't group with others anymore.

when blizz made dungeon queues it destroyed the social aspect of WoW. They also made quests and mobs easier so player could solo faster

ah yes I love spamming LFG for 20 minutes looking for a tank/healer.
dungeon queues teleporting the group to the dungeon is AIDS but it's extremely useful for grouping

bro, a game wasting your time 20 yearsago? good design
A game doing the same now? greedy and pushing player engagment

I hate old mmo players, they are the worst and most patheric morons in the whole gaming world

The only good period of WoW was when it first came out and everyone was leveling together and fighting in the world.

Name 10 original non-indie games of any genre that topped the previous best game of that genre
Why the frick would WoW be topped? Good games stopped being released at like 2010 if we are being optimistic

If China wasn't China, Genshin Impact could have replaced WoW entirely. China has all kinds of laws against long-term gaming and various MMORPGs. So the developer was forced to turn their large project into a single player game.

The game was going to be a MMORPG from the very start, except they were not allowed to develop an MMORPG due to laws against MMORPGs in China. What part of that do you not understand? You stupid hick.

one of my fondest memories back in the day was actually talking to people, and wow was one of my very first wholesome online experience.

the way the internet connects people now replaces this experience in wow. this is why MMOs will never be good until the normies get off the internet, which will never happen

The average WoW player is in his late 30s by now. New MMORPGs aren't WoW and they won't make it 2006 again. You don't get to relive those days.
