Never understood the hatred between Quake 1 and 2 fans. I liked Q1 for the medieval eldritch horror, and I liked Q2 for the cybernetic body horror. I replay both regularly from time to time.
That was like literally the same thing as it would have been if it had released with the Wolfenstein name attached to it though. It not being a Wolf3D sequel changed nothing.
Quake 2 just feels slow, shitty and uninspired compared to other shooters of the era
Even out of just games made on the Q2 engine I'd rather play Kingpin or Sin instead of Q2 itself

frick no, nuDoom is shit. It needs to be a combo of Q1 + Q2 singleplayer, with Q3 multiplayer. Maybe some kind of crossover story with Ranger and Bitterman or some time travel/dimension colliding shit and you have to go through a mix of Q1 and Q2 worlds. The enemies could be a fusion of Shub and Strogg (think Shambler with mechanical Strogg add-ons). I think that'd be frickin cool
Eh. I'd check it out eventually but I wouldn't pay full price for it. The whole Quake series is a mess in terms of theme and the modern Doom games aren't doing much better. The best possible outcome of Q5 would be "a pretty good boomer shooter".
I played the frick out of this in high school when it came out, then all the mods... team fortress, 3-way capture the flag (my favorite), action quake 2. Countless hours poured into this game. It had something about it that Q1 (while still great) didn't have. I also made a ton of online friends and we chatted through ICQ. Those were the good old days
