BotW was better for its time than TotK was and was far more original too
The Wii U was only a commercial failure. In terms of cultural capital it had more on it than the Switch has had after double the time. This explains why all the most relevant games on the Switch are ostensibly Wii U ports. You can pretty easily argue that Smash Ultimate, Mario Wonder, Tears of the Kingdom and so on are all functionally identical in performance and structure to their Wii U predecessors. To say nothing of MK8D or Pikmin 3 HD or the numerous mobile game tier rush jobs on hardware which wasn't even remotely on par with consoles at the time, and especially not now. The Switch, ironically, is more of a failure than the fricking Virtual Boy when taking into account how little actually came out of it that was truly new or groundbreaking.

Tears of the Kingdom is a masterpiece.
It's a 10/10 game and everything I could have wanted from a BotW sequel. It's majestic. It's one of the greatest games I've ever played and has 100+ hours of high-quality, fully-fleshed-out content with systems on systems of brilliance. And it's portable running on ancient hardware. Things as simple as Ascend are breathtakingly impossible achievements.

It was on Nintendo to prove that a BOTW sequel would be more exploration of BOTW's mechanics and not "BOTW but again". They failed. Probably because their options were:

>Make a smaller and more tightly-focused world for the sequel, indirectly admitting that a huge nonlinear world isn't all that good
>Make a rehash using the same world
If BOTW's gameplay fundamentals were really that good, then releasing what is tantamount to a level pack/second quest should've worked fine. It evidently did not.
Nothing, it's just that the game is very very similar to the last one. Still a great game and the best one this year by a good margin.
Would have won everything again as long as nothing big came out, but BG3 was extremely popular with its had porn with waifu shit and it was something new for a lot of people despite being one of oldest type of games in gaming, and Alan Wake was that "we are the Hollywood avant garde game of this year and I'm friends with Geoff and a lot of journos so give me something" kind of game.

None of those games contain some magic ingredient that makes them "like BOTW" in any meaningful capacity. They're completely fricking standard open world games that slap the BOTW adjacent label on to sell. Because BOTW is not meaningfully different from completely standard open world.
