And an important aesthetic. Reminds me of that old black and white movie about WW1 dogfights. They had like dozens of planes flying in the air and filming it, but because there were no clouds, the motion wasn't really captured on film. They had to reshoot a lot of scenes on a cloudy day and the relative motion was what made it exciting.
If you can't fly your spaceship like 1 feet of the ground it's not going to be fun. Theres no relative motion, no danger of crashing and burning.
There's no danger of crashing and burning in 9/10 space combat games, outside of stations and asteroids.
In-atmosphere flight is sorta fun and Starfield is going to suffer for not having it if they don't have any other vehicles but it's not like it detracts from the main purpose of spaceships in the way you talk about blank backgrounds detracting from airplane movies.
the point is just because you have spaceflight in your game doesn't mean it's going to be fun. It's going to get tiresome real fast if you want to fly around the same planet as part of some quest and it involves sitting through the spacecraft taking off and landing animations and associated loading screens countless times. That's technically space flight, but it's not fun. it's the equivalent of horse carriages in Skyrim as fast travel.
I'm really hoping the game is fantastic as Skyrim is officially done to death and I've done 500 hours of Fallout 4. I can't do it anymore. I refuse to buy FO76 too.

Think about all the times you go outside and you see a fallen tree, a little stream thats overflowing, a rotten animal carcass. small trees amongst a forest of older, taller trees. lakes that dry up first and refill in the rain. And even if there's a forest thats a complete monoculture because it's artifically planted every single tree will be unique. Kingdom Come deliverance and Witcher 3 show how handcrafted forests can look.
