That dog is probably emoting that it's going to maim your toddler, but people have a tendency to project human (read: "positive") traits or emotions onto their pets because they think it's cute. They do this by playing dress up with their pets or saying stuff like, "Aw look, he's smiling!" This can be extremely dangerous.
