      >Valve sold 3 million steam decks according to the most recent figures
      >That's 3 million new "Arch" users
      >No Fedora at all
I thought it was curious that the internal thing segregated Steam Deck and Linux but not the OS trackers and ALSO new this year, Virtual Reality as it's own platform, last year it counted VR as Windows

SteamDeck is in in that percentage and its the biggest one (over 40%). It just isnt shown there for whatever reason unless you open up Linux details

Well yeah, if Gnome doesn't have a vital feature then it doesn't have it. No need to beat around the bush, and everyone knows you can't reason with Gnome devs about what features would be nice to have.

okay, so how's that called when a $10 billion corporation uses free software in their paid products?

As someone who's actually used multiple monitors, the secondary in a 2 monitor setup mostly stays idle when gaming on a single monitor fullscreen setup. It's convenient to be able to mouse across to content on another screen but there's not much difference between that and alt-tabbing. Dual monitor setups were obsoleted by mass production 4k monitors (unless you do 2x4k) and triple monitors are glorified ultrawide so you'd probably fullscreen across all monitors anyway.

                >IBM in it's entirety isn't involved in linux development, only red hat is
Probably true now, but only because IBM/Redhat did a bit of restructuring and shifted teams around so they didn't have two separate groups working on the same thing.
IBM has been doing Linux development since the 90s.

The Steam TOS don't override the GPL. Everything Valve does in the open, is done in the open.
Valve does officially employ a number of their Linux devs. Others are contractors employed by Code Weavers. A few big names are guns for hire that Valve pays extremely well when they need them but can't keep them on full time because they are in too high demand.

Proton isn't a paid product, nor is it tied to a paid product, so at best, your argument applies only to SteamOS, officially supported use of which requires a Steam Deck. So demonstrate that the commercial use of SteamOS violates the license terms of Arch Linux, etc., or go away.

GPL says that anything you distribute to a user, the user has the right to everything you had access to and the same right to modify and redistribute it.
It doesn't say you have to distribute it to everyone, on all hardware, for all purposes.

So there is nothing preventing anyone else from making other SteamOS-like GNU/Linux distributions, in fact there are a bunch of them.

Technically GPL only requires you to distribute the source when requested from people who you distributed binaries to.
Valve is going above and beyond what a number of companies do by making everything available in public.

                >Technically GPL only requires you to distribute the source when requested from people who you distributed binaries to
Yeah, but you have to follow through for every customer, and there are a lot of Decks being sold. This is obviously the most straightforward option for them. Valve isn't hostile to free software.

There are a lot of smartphones going around and many phone manufacturers requires some personalized way of requesting sources and then waits for like a month before sending them as a single huge tarball or patchset with no commit history, whichever is less useful. Then again, they are hostile to free software and they do all of that intentionally.

        >last year it counted VR as Windows
Valve developers have been spotted posting screenshots showing references to SteamOS VR.

The survey is flawed, look at how many chinese users it claims are using steam over english (in the realm of 60%)
The hardware survey is massively overinflated by asian cyber cafes and how each user on a new account counts as a 'new OS' because of the software they use to wipe the machines, which supplies them with new identifers that Steam would use to make this survey. One machine in a cybercafe in China can count as many as 100 times. According to Steam stats, it makes no sense for Steam not to be in simplified Chinese rather than English when we know that isn't true.

          Anonymous

It is true, the Survey has a bunch of issues:
          >It tries to prioritize a users new system so that they can get it tracked as quickly as possible when a user upgrades
But, it always sees Net Cafe users as being on new systems
          >It tries to spot a users primary system so it doesn't count their Mac laptop and ignore their Windows desktop
But that means it tracks users Windows laptops and ignores Linux desktops.
It also might contribute to MacOS being under counted because finally
          >It only tracks a single system per account
So if a user has multiple systems that have equal weight for the survey to present, it will track one of them at random.

Ultimately I'm not sure if it is worth it for Valve to fix the survey, they may need to just retire it. They have more modern stat tracking internally and that is what they present to developers or publishers.
Stuff like the per-platform split they show in users year in review stats.

About .8% or roughly 40% of Linux users. That number still fluctuates a bit month to month.
Deck has been selling like crazy, but it has also been driving Linux adoption on other systems.
It will be interesting to see where it is in a year with the increased production volume for 2024 or around 5 million units if both production lines stay in operation.

            what does this mean?

              Anonymous

the simplist explanation is that windows and linux do things differently because they're different and descended from different OSes (linux is unix and windows is IBM dos)

the names of equivalent functionality (literally functions) in linux and windows are different and the information you provide them is different (function parameters) and the way that you provide them that information is different (calling convention and application binary interface i.e. how you store parameters in memory registers + RAM) and the way the operating system represents information is different
on linux everything is a file, on windows everything is an object
and the format of programs is different, ELF on linux, PE (.exe/.dll) on windows
linux filenames are divided by and start with / while windows filenames are divided by and start with your drive like A: or B: (technically under the hood they start with )
on windows to open a file you call OpenFile (the interface for programs) which calls NtOpenFile (the interface for drivers) and while on linux you just call open which is i think the equivalent of NtOpenFile

so for programmers windows provides a function called open which is built on top of OpenFile but it's not low level like it is on linux and is also just the name and data types
what wine is doing is similar to that except much much more extensive, to an extreme degree
building fully compatible windows interfaces to linux code
it's actually most similar to windows subsystem for linux one (not two, two is just actually linux)

As if in 100 years when we're translating win32 on AMD64 to ??? architecture and some different OS running on a supercomputer with vegana extension that can think for itself, it still won't be as good as Windows because it's emulating it.

            Anonymous

            >wow64
64 vs 32 bit can get confusing on windows as well, iirc there's some system components that named themselves 64 something but actually run only 32 bit

              Anonymous

yes that's literally the component he's describing
WoW64 means windows on windows 64, it's 32 bit emulation on top of windows 64 bit
not that that's actually doing much it's just basically address space translation iirc, there's a reason the main windows interface is still called win32 informally

              >things work like windows
Windows barely works, if even that.
On Linux, I want some program or whatever, I type its name in the app installer and click install and it works.
On Windows, I have to hunt through dozens of websites for a random executable file that might be for the wrong version of Windows, outdated, full of malware or a dolphin porn VR game instead of what I wanted, then navigate whatever install steps it requires in order to actually have it running.
Even stuff that Windows is supposedly able to do better is actually much worse. I recently tried to install Nvidia drivers on a fresh install and first I had to find where they are (the default download from Nvidia is some social media program that tries to make me log in to whatever), then use like 5 dropdowns to select which hardware I have, only to be provided a .exe installer that spat out some obscure error about how it's the wrong variant of the driver for my Windows config. In the end, I had to use an AI chatbot to conjure a link to a working driver installer, since I wasn't able to find one on my own.
On Linux, Nvidia just works on installation or, in worst case, after a single trivial install from the package manager.

are you fricking moronic? sure its fast and easy on linux but if u have THAT much trouble on windows downloading something then there is seriously something wrong with you. it is more cumbersome than sudo apt or a program store on the distro sure but exaggeration much? usually its just "make sure u go to the official site/github"

                Yeah, it's
                1. google the program to find its website
                2. navigate the website to find the download page
                3. find the right version of the download on that page
                4. make sure to avoid the fake ad download links
                5. run the downloaded installer
                6. go through the installer, making sure to disable all the adware and other harmful stuff in there
                7. whoops! you clicked the adware bundle installer download instead of just the application installer in step 3, so you now have avast on your system forever

The majority of Windows users are Net Cafe users who have no choice of what they use, or casual users who have no preference for what they use.
This is why Valve made the Deck, in the hope that an affordable low-end PC that was easy to use would appeal to a mainstream audience.
Which it thankfully seems to be doing even if the production volume is still low in console terms.

There is a very real danger that the advent of Windows systems, running on ARM hardware, and that only run Microsoft's subscription games service out of the box, will see PC gaming as we know it collapse to a much smaller user base.

Fix'd for you. No one actually likes Windows but because Excel and Adobe exist, we're forced to use it. Doesn't matter if you're shit or not at computers, no one actually likes Windows. The only time people actually liked Windows was when we got XP SP2 and 7 SP1, easy to use, sane defaults, no resource hungry, and overall, good and productive UI/UX design.

              >vrr doesn't work if you have multiple screens
That isn't true. VRR on X doesn't work if you have one "fullscreen" window on one monitor in a multi monitor setup. It works if you have one monitor or if you fullscreen your window across all monitors.

                Anonymous

It does work. VRR can only work on fullscreen windows and Xorg draws one window for the desktop, so you get VRR when you fullscreen the application regardless of how many monitors you have. Because of Xorgs core design you can't run a fullscreen window on a single monitor. I'm pretty sure that Xorg doesn't support exclusive fullscreen or compositor unredirection on one out of several monitors, for the same reason.

VRR is only broken on wayland, because it uses the atomic modesetting kernel api for the mouse cursor, so monitor refresh rate is synced to the cursor instead of the game/video output. Regardless, VRR is a gimmick anyway. If you can't run a game at a stable framerate buy a better gpu or turn down settings.

                >Having to disable secondary displays for VRR
You don't. You run the application in true fullscreen mode across all monitors to get VRR, rather than using single monitor "fullscreen" mode which is treated as subwindow rendering by x.

                >You run the application in true fullscreen mode across all monitors to get VRR

As someone who's actually used multiple monitors, the secondary in a 2 monitor setup mostly stays idle when gaming on a single monitor fullscreen setup. It's convenient to be able to mouse across to content on another screen but there's not much difference between that and alt-tabbing. Dual monitor setups were obsoleted by mass production 4k monitors (unless you do 2x4k) and triple monitors are glorified ultrawide so you'd probably fullscreen across all monitors anyway.

I just got off a months long test drive of Arch. I went back to Windows in the end because of:

    >Steam Big Picture Mode
I enjoy sitting on my couch to play games on my TV. To do this, I've run a 50ft HDMI cable from my PC to said TV.
In Windows, Steam can auto-swap my primary screen to he TV when I enter big picture mode. You can't do that with Linux. The setting to do so through steam doesn't exist.

    >Spoofing resolutions
My monitor is a Samsung G9, which has a resolution of 5120x1440. It does not natively support a 4K resolution.
A good work-around for the Steam Big Picture problem would be to stream my games to my Steam Deck in it's dock with the TV as an external display for it. Using my PC as the host would essentially just be using my steam deck as a middle man.
This doesn't work due to the fact that I would have to play at 1440p to get the 16:9 aspect ratio instead of being able to play my games at the TV's native 4K.
To my knowledge, there is no way to "Fake" resolutions in wayland currently. Xrandr works in X11, though.

Reminder that there's no downside at all to dual booting Linux. On the rare occasion something doesn't work you can just boot back into windows. It's easy as frick to install Mint.

      >The Steam TOS don't override the GPL
Thoughbeit most of the stuff valve funds is licensed with MIT or similar licenses.

      >The Steam TOS don't override the GPL
obviously, valve employed top tier lawyers to mitigate all this licensing bullshit and present steamos as a "collection of various pieces of software", but in the end it only works on steam deck

Proton isn't a paid product, nor is it tied to a paid product, so at best, your argument applies only to SteamOS, officially supported use of which requires a Steam Deck. So demonstrate that the commercial use of SteamOS violates the license terms of Arch Linux, etc., or go away.

Your failed rebuttal to "Proton isn't a paid product" was to point out that Steam is proprietary. That is how you moved the goalposts. Now you're moving the goalposts again by pretending that we're discussing whether Proton and Wine are the same thing.

Your incorrect view of Proton as a paid product was heavily implied when you too issue with the fact that I said it wasn't one:

                >skipping the part where you need proprietary steam to use it
Why even post that if not to imply that Steam being proprietary makes Proton a paid product? Anyway, Proton is free and you're coping.

If it wasn't at all relevant to the original argument why would you even bring it up as a reply? Are you incapable of understanding how conversations work? Do you not know what the cooperative principle is? Might as well have replied with "you can use bacon grease to cook" and it'd have had the same effect as far as being part of a conversation. Actually, it would be the same if your reply was as truthful as the bacon comment, but you can use proton with lutris, so bacon is better

I like it but I had trouble using it for the first time. The UI could be improved and Flatpak also comes with some permissions-related hurdles. Once you've figured out which button does what and how to give Flatpak the permissions it needs to access the executables you're trying to run, it's pretty good, but I can definitely imagine Windows babies getting filtered by it. Of course, they also get filtered by things like adding execute permission to shell scripts. lol

If it has an AMD card, then yes it probably would be.
Even if it is a pre-GCN card you won't get Vulkan but you will get better D3D9 support than Windows. There are people working on Vulkan support for them, but it will be a sort of reverse engineering job making the hardware do things it wasn't designed for like the implementation for Nvidia's 10 series hardware.

If it has an older Nvidia card, then it probably wouldn't be worth it, unless you have the budget for, and are comfortable with sticking a recent low-end AMD GPU into it.

Linux is used for servers, though, so no amount of coping and seething about my uptime being measured in hours instead of weeks will change the fact that I could leave it on for days if I wanted my electricity bill to be higher for no practical benefit.

You are talking about most things about Linux gaming.
WINE for years stalled and dragged their feet on game support. Then when DXVK came about they got all pissy because now nobody will give them ass pats for shit level work.
Thing is projects like WINE and other stuff in the FOSS linux gaming space. Until someone 1 ups them the devs are lazy. They always need some hotshot to give them a boot up the ass. Either Valve or the kid who made DXVK.

It is going to depend on what API the older game used, and what card you have.
For newer AMD cards, you're still better off using RadeonSI for OpenGL games.
For older AMD cards for D3D9 games, there still may be a benefit to using Gallium Nine.
For Nvidia users, unless you're on the absolute latest hardware generation, your card is still faking a lot of Vulkan features using slower work arounds, and you also don't really have many other options.

If it has its own dongle, either that dongle is a bluetooth adapter, which should generally just work there aren't that many chips cheap adapters would be based on.
If it uses a proprietary wireless adapter but that uses standard USB controller interfaces, then to the OS it should look just like any other USB controller, in which case it is also extremely likely to just work.

If you are using Linux, you already made the choice to not use windows, therefore, you either get used to how Linux does shit or use Windows.

I found what I like the most about Linux is the terminal. Something that I can have with Windows Subsystem for Linux. I don't have major issues with Linux but I have too many minor ones that just stack up and makes me miss how little issues I had with Windows. I'm just going to stick with Windows until Linux gets fleshed out more and all the shit inflated ego drama in FOSS goes away. I'll leave Linux for my Steamdeck and my chink laptop I hardly use anymore.

Is this the linux thread? Haven't seen one in a while.
GTA 3 and Vice City have problems. The RE3 port doesn't work with simple texture mods, it just crashes. Running through proton/wine is fine, even fully modded, but I get weird hitches every now and then as well as a weird misalignment of polygons on buildings only a pixel wide which is unnoticeable but kinda annoying if you catch it. Anybody experience this or have advice?
No problems with any other games ever since the steam deck came out so it's weird only these gta games have issues.

I had a problem with a crash when using rocket launcher in GTA3. It was fixed by using the 1.0 executable. This was the old version no longer sold in Steam and everyone were complaining it having problems with that being the fix. It depends what version of GTA3 you're trying to run.

every game i've tried to play in the past year has run on linux. i finished armored core 6, sekiro, front mission 1st remake, axiom verge, and unavowed. i played cs2, quake, quake live, quake champions, ace combat 7, cyberpunk 2077, remnant, and a bunch more. i haven't had a single problem playing any games on linux so far.

        not this shit again.
Try to unpack or install codex games or any other installer versions and linux shits itself unable to do it.
You need GOG tier games with no DRM to work on linux.

there isn't, I'v posted in 2 fricking linux threads now and every time it goes like this
            >there is no problem
            >yes there is
            >prove it
            >here is the proof
            >but we need more information
            >it literally has an error code and shit
            >well you expect us to fix it for you tard?!
            >nobodys fixed it so far
            >YOU ARE JSUT TROLLING AND MAKING IT UP EVERYTHING JUJST WORKS ON LINUX
and then repeat the next thread.
I still haven't managed to install/unpack those games on linux, while it just works on windows.
And yes, the linuxgays literally suggested I rely on windows to unpack/install the games so I can run them on linux as a solution.
But then.... why would I use linux to play them

You're a moron, you know that right? There are pirated games that are the equivalent of noinstall of the old days and all you have to do is unzip them to your game folder and even comes packed with .net distributables. Having to use codex or fitgirl is 2014 tier.

            >You're a moron, you know that right?
you can't fix it either moron, which is why nobody in the linux threads has given a way to fix it
            > There are pirated games that are the equivalent of noinstall of the old days and all you have to do is unzip them to your game folder
NOT EVERY FRICKING GAME HAS THAT!!!! THE SAME WAY NOT EVERY GAME HAS A FRICKING GOG VERSION YOU ABSOLUTE SWINE!

    >Nothing works
I rarely run into any games that don't work perfectly, and the ones that don't can almost always be easily fixed with minor tweaking.
    >but but muh anti-cheat games don't work
Don't play online multiplayer slop like Fortnite and Apex Legends, moron. The only game with anti-cheat that will ever matter (War Thunder) works fine on the Deck's SteamOS too so I'm sure it works on the other popular distros as well.

      >I rarely run into any games that don't work perfectly,
that speaks of the games you play rather than the OS compatibility with games.
Some games run just fine. Some games just don't, lot of games have problems

      >but but muh anti-cheat games don't work
      >Don't play online multiplayer slop
      as always
      >everything just works what are ytou talking about
      >this thing doesn't work
      >why do you want that thing, you shouldn't want that thing, don't want that thing, anyway as I Was saying everything just works
