Nobody even remotely caught up with Deltarune's development expected it to come out in 2023 after the newsletters showcasing the slow ass progress. It's gonna be either Fall of this year or early into 2025 because all they have left to finish is Chapter 4.
What I AM upset about though is that Toby lied to us about the Spamton Sweepstakes alternate ending being shown this year. Where the frick is it?

With ch4 being simpler and the game having a proper director, i can see it being content complete in may- august. Several months faster than ch3. I dont see the game releasing later than september. Maybe it could release earlier. At worst, the game will be out in october

To be honest, there's not really any way to win in these sort of situations. You are either brutally honest (and piss people off if progress is not happening fast enough), or you are vague (and piss people off because you don't tell what the progress is). Been there, done that, even if anything I've worked on isn't nearly as popular as undertale.

It IS happening this time tho. Last year ppl were delusional and thought Toby would finish all 3 chapters in 2023. Now there is only one chapter left to finish before release. Toby clearly wants the game out in 2024. With ch5, we would be waiting until late 2025. There is literally no way Toby can take more than a fricking year on chapter 4.

Field actions aren't too bad to make, depending on how you're handling scripting them. They still take a whole bunch of tedious time to make and test, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if deltarune is a bit of a mess because of whatever things they want to throw in. Doubly so if they need to make new assets for a bunch of field events, even if for a gag.

Ironically I don't recall too much speculation on future Dark Worlds in the chapter 1 days, except for after the status update teasers which made some people think chapter 2 would be the hospital because they assumed Virovirokun was a disease virus rather than computer virus.

I think it's moreso that people thought all dark worlds would just be one singular dark world, and in Chapter 2 you would maybe walk past Card Kingdom and arrive in the Cyber World from there.

I agree that Card Kingdom is better than Cyber World but it'd be dumb if the whole game took place there. The whole "objects brought to life" thing made it obvious that each chapter would be a new setting, because it'd be wasted potential otherwise.
latest update was 3 and 4 mostly done and scripted with 5 not started, as of september. no indication I can find they moved away from plan to release 3 through 5.

I don’t remember there ever being a “one payment” deal. Just that 3-5 (then later 3-4) would release and it would “cost more than undertale”
