I literally just installed Arch yesterday and guess what? Using the installer, fresh install, all my games worked OUT OF THE BOX! ON ARCH!
Get an actual noob distro and you are even better. I am convinced that people have bad experience with Linux only because they have Nvidia GPUs and they are using wayland or something so shit is broken by default
and what was your problem then? Seriously. I am sometimes talking to people who cry about Linux games not working when they dont know what Proton is even, sometimes you people are just trolling as well.
So far what I've seen is that peoples problems mostly relate to dualbooting, nvidia and wayland interaction, not knowing what the frick proton is and how to enable it. Thats about it.
Not all games are on Steam and various anti-cheats do not work on Linux.
My software / plugins do not work on Linux.
I couldn't nuke mouse acceleration off any system. So either it's fricked on Linux or it feels entirely different to Windows.
>Not all games are on Steam
great, you dont need steam to play Linux games. Steam only provides these tools out of the box. There are other options that pretty much make it easy as well. >and various anti-cheats do not work on Linux.
this is a valid point though most of these games are competive fps installing Chinese malware on your computer anyway
>I couldn't nuke mouse acceleration off any system
did you use KDE ever? It has very basic checkbox on this. Gnome you need some package to do this for some reason. There is also arch wiki article on this
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Mouse_acceleration#with_libinput
What software? I use a lot of stuff and managed to get everything to work. Granted when I swapped over a few years ago I had spent a few years before that migrating to mostly open stuff because when Windows 10 and more importantly Windows S came out I saw the writing on the wall for its future. I actually do use CAD as well (Fusion 360 was a bit of a pain to get to work compared to everything else I admit, but I'm moving away from it, Autodesk keeps removing features)
On xorg you can just run an xinput command (or add it to your config). >nb4 I dont have hours to get this shit running
Ok, its more minutes and after a couple months you'll be faster at it than the best windows users can navigate their gui's and much more computer literate, a skill I personally think will be valuable in the future. Low time preference tends to be a white man thing though so I get it
why should i switch from w10 to linux, i see no point
Then keep using w10, until MS drops support and you have to move to new thing. Linux requires more effort, and in return you get greater control. If that's not for you it's fine.
it fulfills its purpose just fine as a refuge from windows
It also has way fewer viruses designed for it. The added security is nice
>microsoft cant send your information to India, thats one big point
Stupidly easy to fix. Easier than getting Proton working too. If you don't know how I'm sorry you're so fricking moronic. I run windows 11 with everything stripped out, even Edge. No calling home to Redmond, nothing. Runs lighter than Arch KDE stripped down and it can play games with no emulation.
Really, could you post netstat ports and ram usage? I find that really hard to believe and this is 4chins, land of the big talk and no walk.
why do newbies get tricked into thinking paragraphs are illegal so easily
Not whoever this is, but I think that if you type like a Black person, then you must be a Black person. Why shouldn't we try to actually write grammatically correct sentences. It just shows the quality of your ideas/posts.
Then write in your preferred language. I learned a little Japanese and from what I learned I like it more than English. I don't know enough to speak it, but regardless this is just a cope and there's so many people that make these funny statements to indicate that they don't want to/care to become proficient at something. It's really just a disservice how stupid people are becoming.

I'm speaking generally, but it's easy for you to cherry pick or misinterpret idea's for the sake of "owning people online". You can't seriously argue that people becoming dumber is good. Like I said, the fact that you can't type out your sentences in a proper manner shows how lazy and low quality your ideas are, and the only people who argue against it are either lazy or have an ESL barrier.
>I am convinced that people have bad experience with Linux only because they have Nvidia GPUs
I have a shitty old laptop that I use when I travel mostly to play 2d indie rpgs on steam
it has windows 8.1 and a nvidia gpu, I bought it back in 2015
will I have a bad time installing linux to run games on it?
I dont want to get a new laptop since I do 95% of my gaming on a desktop
more can go wrong with Nvidia but its not the end of the world. What you can expect to run on that machine should run on Linux just like that though maybe with slitghly worse performance since older Nvidia GPUs are much much less supported. This is because of Nvidia btw, who is being ass with drivers. I have seen people use GTX 970 and do fine on Linux for the most parts though.
Nvidia on Linux is a meme. I've been gaming on Linux with NV hardware for about 10 years and while it was rough at the beginning, I've had zero driver/hardware related issues in like 5 years. It just werks.
>desktop flickered every time GPU switched power states for like a year >cyberpunk crashed for 6 months on turing cards
They fixed both in 545
It's usually fine but if something is broken, it will take a long time to fix.
>window pajeets are seething on every linux thread
It's because the guy making the recent Linux threads is literally inviting them in.
We need to go back to making Linux threads for Linux users and replying "no one asked" to everyone who says they don't like it.
I have made them in the past. Right now this thread exists and if I make another then people will screech about there being multiple threads about the same thing even though this thread is for shitposting and mine would be comfy. Also the /vg/ thread is comfy already.
what exactly is the purpose of Linux? Also, you dont need to use Steam. Steam only provides tools but those tools are free software and not Steams own and you are free to download them yourself and use them without steam.

I tried plenty of games. If the game doesnt start up you clearly didnt check the steam play box
That's been the experience for every game I've tried except for one. Risk of Rain Returns tends to crash on startup a few times before it runs. That was when it launched so that might not even be the case anymore

thats a platinum rated game on protondb. That absolutely should just work
I did months ago when I got my new computer
it's been smooth sailing ever since, aside from a single instance that took me maybe 10 minutes to fix and was completely my fault to begin with
microsoft cant send your information to India, thats one big point. Some newer also work better on Linux, support for older games tends to be better on Linux as well. Overall, because of its open platform it will catch up to windows naturally because open is better development vice

you probably think google isnt spying on you on chromium based browsers? With closed source, you are even more clueless about how much of the surveillance you actually turned off
I don't use chromium based browsers. I use Firefricks. Also you can block any and all spying with modification to the OS in audit mode and WinPE recovery, any left can be handled with pfsense, pihole or your firewall/home router of choice. I block 100% of unknown communications from my OS. It is as secure as it is at work where I hardened our systems for secure government communications.

When did I say that? I said there is no point installing Linux to play games which winds up more complicated than just fixing Windows to be secure and not spy on you, since your library and software compatibility is infinitely larger on Windows.

I switched to linux so that windows would not waste one more second of my time. they don't work on windows too

Stupidly easy to fix: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kevle1/Windows-telemetry-blocklist/master/windowsblock.txt
You can also do it in OS if you mount the image from WinPE. Since there is no software protection when you're outside the OS and you're free to remove anything you want entirely and block it from coming back. Plenty of guides online on how to do it, and if you use WinPE with Powershell 5.x loaded in you can even just grab a powershell script someone smarter than you wrote to do it for you. Black person.
I partially switched already. I can see why normalgays get filtered by Linux.
My only issue is that Linux progress in compatibility is slow, it's not fast enough compared to Windows gradual drop to shit.
Redpill me on Linux. Very little of my games actually work on Linux natively. Why should I swap? I want to get away from Windows but I also want to play my stinking games.
native doesn't really matter with the advances in wine and proton
it's not emulating, it's a compatibility layer
your games are still playing on bare metal, and some are even performing better than on Windows
the only thing you have to worry about is if you play huge AAA multiplayer games that actively block Linux users
And for the games that aren't native, how long is the process to get them running?
Check those two boxes and most games will work. If that doesn't work, check protondb to see what other people did to get it working. It could be as simple as using a different version of proton or a launch option
proton is a fork of wine designed to be as just werks as possible. you should probably grab the latest version of proton-GE from protonup though because it distributes codecs that valve is legally unable to, for better compatibility with prerendered cutscenes
>Do I need Wine along with Steam's proton?
if proton works, dont touch it is pretty much the thing.
Only if you want to play pirated games outside of steam. You may need proton-GE for some games if anything.
Thanks.
Anyways, I end up installing and uninstalling wine while trying a workaround to play a certain game that's not compatible. It broke something, presumably Proton's dependencies got uninstalled too.
How do I reinstall Proton and its dependencies?
afaik proton doesn't have dependencies because steam brings its runtime. You can always just keep wine installed system-wide, not like it's interfering with proton.
What game and did it give an error message?
Never ran into something that couldn't have wine installed if it doesn't use it, it shouldn't mess with it.
jesus what's your base temp? 90C?
Energy companies hate him. With one simple trick he created his own star to power itself from its own heat.
>Redpill me on Linux.
linux is free as in beer and as in speech. You are in charge always. >Very little of my games actually work on Linux natively.
yes and the push for native games is even lower now with the compatlity layer called proton. It translates directX (windows only graphics API) to Vulkan/OpenGL. >Why should I swap?
Linux is free as in beer and as in speech. Some games also run better on Linux because of this compatility layer (Vulkan is better on many games and the compality layer fixes some directX issues)
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Windows-11-scores-dead-last-in-gaming-performance-tests-against-3-Linux-gaming-distros.778624.0.html >I want to get away from Windows but I also want to play my stinking games.
you are able to do that for the most part. Some games like League of Legends, Valorant, PUBG and most Call of Duties dont support Linux though. Not because its impossible or hard, they just choose not to. This might change one day, who knows. >And for the games that aren't native, how long is the process to get them running?
when you play through steam, steam downloads proton for you if you have checked steam play checkbox on the settings. With that, most games will work out of the box, native or not. Some games might work a bit worse, but they will work. The difference will not be -20% but less than that.
>they just choose not to
Licensing issues with developing kernel modules for their anti-cheats, no (something something have to open source them, which would be bad for obvious reasons)? I don't think EAC/whoever else supports Linux runs kernel mode ACs there
Linux doesn't have to be perfect it just have to be better than the amount of pain in the ass Windows starts to give as MS forces people off old versions, shoves in telemetry, shoves in ads, shoves in features nobody wants, hides more advanced options (settings/control panel clusterfrick), or doesn't properly support its own backward compatibility.
Many new gamers work natively. Many older games work very easily without any extra steps beyond turning on proton in Steams options. If you use GoG most of their Windows versions will install fine with Lutris with no additional help and many have Linux versions. Games that don't work out of the box in these ways are fairly few but for those you just look up which proton works best and click it (did this some in 2020 but its been awhile since I've had to) or you search lutris + game name and run their installer that tweaks things for you. Older games (gen 7 and earlier) will often work better. Emulation is better. If you are worried about mods the Windows installs will mod as normal, linux its usually drag and drop.
I've run into a couple games a few years ago that took a minute to cache shaders and were fine after and one game that didn't work at launch but ran fine a couple months later (had some issues at launch on Windows as well but was playable)
Its not for everyone yet and the more techy a person is the easier time they'll have. But its been getting easier by the year for awhile now. For me the tipping point was a few years ago. If you can make yourself not boot back over to Windows for a week or so it suddenly makes sense and you don't want to go back.
there are a lot of distros you can choose from.
I would suggest either
Linux Mint
Pop_OS
Nobara Linux
Ubuntu
there will not be that much difference in the end, but Nobara Linux has gotten the best performance out of these.
nobara is the most "out of the box" distro for gaming. you'll eventually switch, but it's one of the better starting points to dip your toes in linux. it's a modified fedora by the guy who made proton for steam.
just make sure to download the kde version and get the nvidia version if you're on nvidia card
it won't ever be popular
but anyone even thinking about switching is already a power user compared to your average person who would never even consider changing os in the first place
It won't until Linux Black folk start designing it to be more user friendly, and provide easy to follow guides rather than saying "read the 3 trillion long page wiki to do this one simple thing."

>Linux is already popular, more than Mac OS X and Windows....in servers.
No shit. Its part of what I do for work. But we are talking about desktops and gaming. Its not that I even want to gatekeep your average user either. I don't want it on the corporate radar. I'll give you an example as to why. (and I know many companies contribute to it, that isn't what I mean)
Way back when in the old days blocking ads was super easy and it blocked everything. Now you and I may feel its still easy but this is terminally online Ganker not most people. Corps didn't like it so with phones, chrome, some back end changes slowly it got harder for the average person who didn't want to bother to install a different browser, or find a new pirate youtube app, or dns hole twitch sponsors, or doesn't know what a DNS is, etc. Now will they force me? No, I'm the type of butthole that will put in 3x the effort to block the ad over watching it out of spite and have the know how to do it custom if I had to. But each change some of avg joe gives up.
Same for mircotransaction. We here rioted, but its boiling the frog, but we aren't the majority. And eventually you have an iPad generation that doesn't remember any different and my ass not buying it won't matter. This is why I left Windows, its slowly adding in bullshit because bit by bit people just give up because day to day life is hard and busy.
I don't want that level of corporate interest finding its way into Linux where you suddenly have them push some anti-consumer shit for a game that eats away bit by bit the idea of the OS.
Linux is for business critical application servers, not gaming.
You know until Doom and DirectX the same was said of Windows. Gamers preferred DOS because it had less overhead and better support.
>(and I know many companies contribute to it, that isn't what I mean)
Yes I happened to mention that. They contribute to it as a tool that they use because its very useful for IT work, development, and servers. >Its part of what I do for work.
I'm one of those, nothing major but I use it and work with Linux based systems for work. And my friends in software development would rather staple their nut sacks to a moving train over developing in Windows. But none of that has to do with home desktop use.
I was talking about Linux going on the radar as a market to exploit. Think DVD vs Bluray. DVD was done by many companies (about 20+ iirc majorly involved). They didn't want to lose money on another VHS vs Beta war so they all chipped in and nobody ran the show. But one tech gen later and Bluray however is owned by Sony and everyone using it has to play by their rules. We don't want one company trying to shovel in drm or some form of control or them banding together to do it if they get mad too many escaped their walled garden.
Do I think it would go that way? Honestly no. Too much infrastructure depends on Linux, but I don't really want to find out either. Its why I'm glad Valve lead the charge for it because they themselves don't want to be stuck in that walled garden. (yes I get the irony since Steam itself is sort of that but not in the way say MS used to be in the 90s/00s of our way or get fricked)
It won't until Linux Black folk start designing it to be more user friendly, and provide easy to follow guides rather than saying "read the 3 trillion long page wiki to do this one simple thing."

If people can't figure out basic CLI, they are NGMI, cause linux will always be a moving target.
Maybe valve's arch distro is enough for smooth gaming, but for day to day computing you inevitably will have to be at least capable of navigating linux bullshit.
there's still multiplayer games on linux
deep rock galactic is a great co op game and there's always valve's shit but I don't care for pvp anymore since half the people who play online are cheaters
Not much point in PvE for me, cause my IRL friends are not into gaming, and my preferred PvP games are mostly behind moronic anticheat software. Imma just stick to whatever the frick singleplayer games i find interesting. There certainly are multiplayer titles available, but im just not interested in them.

i don't care about losing windows altogether, it still handles some vidya better than loonix. But I have this one single debian installation on the side for the last 15 years or so, and latest Proton developments has turned it into my primary OS. I can't remember last time I switched back to windows. Linux handles vidya really, really well nowadays, I'm only switching back for latest vidya in HDR on TV, sim racing, and for extensive VR sessions.
then again, i'm sitting on linux because i prefer linux. i doubt this minor framerate gain in one or three games on proton is good enough of a reason for anyone to make a switch when they don't care about linux itself

It seems like you're experiencing issues with running games on Linux using tools like Wine, Proton, and various settings fixes. The challenges you're facing might be related to compatibility issues between Linux and certain games or software.
As for your comment about Windows, opinions on operating systems can vary, and individuals may have different preferences based on their needs and experiences. Some users prefer Windows for its wide compatibility with various applications, including many games, while others appreciate Linux for its open-source nature and customization options.
If you're encountering specific problems with running games on Linux, it could be helpful to provide more details about the issues you're facing. Impossible, all the sirs have told me that windows doesn't require troubleshooting.
windowschads, how are we going to cope not being able to play mech commander? I literally cannot sleep holding my tears thinking about it every night, we're missing out the greatest game ever made and every single day people try to play it but they can't
>using Linux >want to play game >just do it instead of wasting time rebooting >cause more tears than people who spend their whole lives trying to be epic internet trolls
I don't understand why people get so worked up about it
Rebooting to Windows to play games that already just work on Linux, something Ganker thinks is so essential for gaming that pants are pooped if I don't do it.
Rebooting to Windows to play games that already just work on Linux, something Ganker thinks is so essential for gaming that pants are pooped if I don't do it.
I like it when the orbital guns go boom
>troons post them playing games on troonix >always some pixel art indie game or 30 year old game
>never shows any screenshots
bro windows is the default for pc gaming, outside of these minority thread every single pc gaming screenshot is from windows
windows doesn't need validation because it's the norm, the same way straight people don't need pride parades to show that they exist, you're the ones desperately trying to show that your minority exists and matters
>windows is the place to go for PC gaming
Agree >Linux is trying to prove itself as a contender but always fails to do so.
Remains to be seen
Valve is putting some work into distancing gaming from microsoft, new nvidia drivers about to drop, chances are status quo will change significantly in near future.
>looks at all three images but never answers the question
I guess this is what the zoomers call "cope".
No, I will not change my taste in games just to make Linux look more appealing to normies.
None of those games are 30 years old, by the way, and Brigador's sprites look good.
it's hilarious how these losers act like snobs over having to make everything unnecessarily more tedious, then the moment they realize people don't want to move to linux because it's a waste of time they suddenly claim it's is more straightforward than windows
>those two morons
the only reason to even have a windows computer around for me is just for changing settings on my mouse
it was worth since I saved 100$ instead of buying a logishit
Does anyone with a G502 have this problem? When I log into >manjaro the lights on the mouse turn off and I have to hit the profile button to get back to my dpi settings. It's fricking annoying
it was that and my 8bitdo controller making me keep windows around
I own one of the no name budget chinese wireless gaming mice that's 40$

Ah I see. Usually simple software works fine with Lutris it could be worth a shot if you do want to swap over. Had to do that for a 3D printer until they made a native version.

I'll try it later but I have doubts since driver related stuff usually does not work
even my coolermaster keyboard in openrgb does not work still but I don't mind since I keep the lights off anyways or on one color
So far proton resolved a bunch of compatibility issues. Bating capital G "Gamers" into linux is kinda pointless imo, you either dig the whole MUH FREE AND LIBRE thing and games are a bonus activity or you don't and nothing can reasonably persuade you.
I'm slightly excited about NVK drivers though, it will probably push some people to switch once they are properly baked.
But I do that. When someone appears to be asking in good faith about whether Linux gaming is viable, I tell them about anti-cheat and other common problems, and I remind them that there's literally no reason to switch if they're happy on Windows. But one of two things happens.
1. They respond "WELL WHY SHOULD I USE LINUX THEN?!?!" even though I was never trying to convince them, because it turns out I was wrong and they weren't asking in good faith.
2. They ignore my honest and helpful post because they're already hyperventilating over some weak bait/banter like the opening post of this thread.
When Nvidia gets wayland support.
I had to give me 7900 XTX to my wife, which means I got an RTX 4080. Forced into Windows until Nvidia gets off it's ass or something opensource happens.
every time my friends mention a problem they are having, i just casually throw out that i don't experience it on linux. adblock not working on youtube? works on my linux computer. steam taking up 3gb of ram? not on my linux computer. computer freezes when tabbing out of fullscreen games? not on my linux computer
>steam taking up 3gb of ram? not on my linux computer
3 gb of ram usage is my entire os, steam, and discord. Steam and discord are vloated pieces of shit.
it finally happened >be me >CS graduate >always prefer open source >know linux due to uni >not normie with tech >still prefer windows over linux because of games >cut to 3 years after >dont pay for windows 10 key for new gaming rig >my crack method has been fixed by MS so i see watermark yesterday >frick you bill gates i aint paying shit >research best distro for gaming >nobara is brought up multiple times >install it as only OS, purge win10 >bunch of bullshit things that annoy me but i knew this about linux beforehand so no biggy >install elden ring >install proton >game freezes on loading screen >try different proton ver >issue persist. go to sleep as i was getting angry >boot pc today >now my pc micro stutters and freezes in the desktop with nothing going on >ready to rage quit and reinstall windows >calm down and this time i try a non meme distro >install linux mint fresh as only OS >setup all my media and shit >install elden ring >just click run, no bullshit change properties or adding command cringe to program >mfw it just werks
i left linux with the mentally that only autist that love to waste their time use, but this changes everything. dont try meme distro guys. go for the big recognized ones and stop wasting your time
>click on thread >look for linux game suggestions >it's just windows morons slinging shit at linux users for no reason
yeah....i think this is a waste of thread
>look for linux game suggestions
see how you're looking for something within the limited linux compatibility
with windows you don't have to look for OS specific games, you look for pc games in general and you can count on it running on windows
>get new drives >reinstall popOS >bluetooth devices no longer work >reinstall popOS >headphones work, mouse still doesn’t
Why does bluetooth on Linux suck so much?
I use an unactivated Windows 11 just to boot up anti-cheat multiplayer games. For everything else, I use Linux. Made the switch a year ago, I would never switch back to Windows, especially knowing what will likely happen with it.
havent checked in a while but there are three versions, base, nvidia and deck. then each has either gnome or kde as the default desktop environment. i used the nvidia kde version when i started
PC will be an irrelevant platform by the time Linux overtakes Windows
open source community should focus on liberating whatever comes after PC
mobile seems to be even more fricked up than PC
you have open source Android, which is running under a proprietary layer of Google shit, and locked down hardware is preventing you from installing new OS
would ooen source community have more luck fightibg for freedom of mobile devices?
I'm a dev and linux user (at work)
Let me give you my reasons:
- My bluetooth controller doesn't work
- Desktop envs are all ugly and janky
- A lot of games don't work
Not ready yet
Because I'm not poor, Linux is for people who use laptops with 2GB of RAM and some integrated or shitty GPU. Windows is for real people, people who work and don't have time for shit.
>HDR >apps works with Oculus Rift >as easy to install >allows me to quickly switch audio, screens, split screens, etc. All the same quality of life that Windows has >Dolby surround
So, basically never. Anon, just pirate Windows, install O&OShutUp10 and turn off everything not listed as green. It works just fine this way.
Linux will never be able to compete until they launch a paid gaming distro (which I would GLADLY pay for).
Never, Windows does everything you'd need to do on a computer. a
When Linux is ready.
So 2035, maybe.
I have used Mint, Manjaro, Elemetaray, Pop_OS over the years, all recommended on both Ganker and Ganker.
Wrong.
and what was your problem then?
Low time preference tends to be a white man thing though so I get it
Then keep using w10, until MS drops support and you have to move to new thing. Linux requires more effort, and in return you get greater control. If that's not for you it's fine.
It also has way fewer viruses designed for it. The added security is nice
Really, could you post netstat ports and ram usage? I find that really hard to believe and this is 4chins, land of the big talk and no walk.
why do linux users type like redditors
sorry I only use 3 imageboards on top of Ganker, I am a redditor when I dont abide by your stupid spacing rules
why do newbies get tricked into thinking paragraphs are illegal so easily
>2 sentence long paragraphs
because only redditors get baited into serious replies to some moronic shit
or he's just samegayging
Not whoever this is, but I think that if you type like a Black person, then you must be a Black person. Why shouldn't we try to actually write grammatically correct sentences. It just shows the quality of your ideas/posts.
Then write in your preferred language. I learned a little Japanese and from what I learned I like it more than English. I don't know enough to speak it, but regardless this is just a cope and there's so many people that make these funny statements to indicate that they don't want to/care to become proficient at something. It's really just a disservice how stupid people are becoming.
>they don't want to/care to become proficient at something
pressing shift really takes skill, yeah
I'm speaking generally, but it's easy for you to cherry pick or misinterpret idea's for the sake of "owning people online". You can't seriously argue that people becoming dumber is good. Like I said, the fact that you can't type out your sentences in a proper manner shows how lazy and low quality your ideas are, and the only people who argue against it are either lazy or have an ESL barrier.
Nuke India and Israel.
Because Linux users are soibeard trannies, the population of Reddit
It just werks.
>desktop flickered every time GPU switched power states for like a year
>cyberpunk crashed for 6 months on turing cards
They fixed both in 545
It's usually fine but if something is broken, it will take a long time to fix.

It's because the guy making the recent Linux threads is literally inviting them in.
We need to go back to making Linux threads for Linux users and replying "no one asked" to everyone who says they don't like it.
why don't you make those threads then?
I have made them in the past. Right now this thread exists and if I make another then people will screech about there being multiple threads about the same thing even though this thread is for shitposting and mine would be comfy.
Also the /vg/ thread is comfy already.
Yeah that's where I go most of the time now, and just skim through these threads.
i just press the play button on steam and it works so i don't know what this image is on about
>DRM
Defeats the purpose of Linux.
it fulfills its purpose just fine as a refuge from windows
Why would I switch from Windows if I have to use Steam still? Defeats the whole purpose of Linux.
not my fault you're too moronic to use wine
what exactly is the purpose of Linux? Also, you dont need to use Steam. Steam only provides tools but those tools are free software and not Steams own and you are free to download them yourself and use them without steam.
so that you don't have to use windows? this isn't difficult to understand
But you still have to use DRM and botnets.
and? the point of linux is to have freedom over my operating system. i don't have to restart my computer to update my gpu drivers like you wintrannies do
>i don't have to restart my computer to update my gpu drivers like you wintrannies do
How often are you updating drivers, wtf?
Who cares? You still have to use Steam.
>You still have to use Steam.
You don't have to though so I'm not sure what the point of your argument is.
>How often are you updating drivers, wtf?
as often as vendor updates them, are you moronic?
>im a beta tester
good goy
You usually update because exploits can come out the minute after the latest patch is released tbh.
nah beta testers are package maintainers
you don't though, you're free to install gentoo, ignore proprietary software entirely and use bottles to play games
but more to the point, your argument is dumb even if I granted it because it's still less proprietary software even if you use steam

Why would I lie about a video game not working on my computer, you mongoloid?
That's a very good question actually, why is where always a bunch of windows-only mongoloids making up silly lies in every linux thread?
So will you suck my wiener if I run neofetch on my terminal and show you what I'm running?
I won't, any windows moron can run neofetch inside WSL.

yes? I literally did this yesterday on Arch just because people complained to me that their games dont work out of the box. Literally only thing I did was install arch, KDE, drivers and steam and that was it.
Okay, that's one game. It's pretty dishonest to claim that will be the experience for all or most games

I'd say at this point Linux has better general compatibility than contemporary Windows.
I did months ago when I got my new computer
it's been smooth sailing ever since, aside from a single instance that took me maybe 10 minutes to fix and was completely my fault to begin with
why should i switch from w10 to linux, i see no point
microsoft cant send your information to India, thats one big point. Some newer also work better on Linux, support for older games tends to be better on Linux as well. Overall, because of its open platform it will catch up to windows naturally because open is better development vice
>microsoft cant send your information to India, thats one big point
Stupidly easy to fix. Easier than getting Proton working too. If you don't know how I'm sorry you're so fricking moronic. I run windows 11 with everything stripped out, even Edge. No calling home to Redmond, nothing. Runs lighter than Arch KDE stripped down and it can play games with no emulation.
>Stupidly easy to fix
you probably think google isnt spying on you on chromium based browsers? With closed source, you are even more clueless about how much of the surveillance you actually turned off
I don't use chromium based browsers. I use Firefricks. Also you can block any and all spying with modification to the OS in audit mode and WinPE recovery, any left can be handled with pfsense, pihole or your firewall/home router of choice. I block 100% of unknown communications from my OS. It is as secure as it is at work where I hardened our systems for secure government communications.
I'm not a communist. I believe software developers should get paid for their product if they want to, not just rich GPL lawyers.
then why are you arguing that it's a bad thing to use steam?
>then why are you arguing that it's a bad thing to use steam?
When did I say that? I said there is no point installing Linux to play games which winds up more complicated than just fixing Windows to be secure and not spy on you, since your library and software compatibility is infinitely larger on Windows.
>When did I say that?
when you complained that you still have to use steam
>I said there is no point installing Linux to play games which winds up more complicated
pressing the play button is complicated?
>just fixing Windows to be secure

lmao even
I switched to linux so that windows would not waste one more second of my time. No more trying to "fix" windows, no more random spikes of my CPU usage from defender, no more windows update, no more trying to force me to upgrade, no more undoing all of my settings with an update, no more of wiping out my linux bootloader.
>when you complained that you still have to use steam
Never said that once, you are confused. I love Steam.
>pressing the play button is complicated?
Only 6% of my library works in Proton or natively in Linux.
I'm on Ganker because I like to play videogames, not try to get them running and then realizing anticheat won't work in Proton so I wasted my time.
>Only 6% of my library works in Proton or natively in Linux.
the frick is on your library
>Never said that once, you are confused. I love Steam.
Then you're not the same person I was replying to.
>Only 6% of my library works in Proton or natively in Linux.
I find that hard to believe. I can't even find a single game in my library that doesn't work, excluding due to anti-cheat.
Looks to me you're on Ganker because you like shilling a dying office OS.
>anticheat won't work in Proton
curious why low level drivers and rootkits don't work on linux
they don't work on windows too
but lets not get into that
>No calling home to Redmond, nothing
win toddlers really believe this shit
Stupidly easy to fix: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kevle1/Windows-telemetry-blocklist/master/windowsblock.txt
You can also do it in OS if you mount the image from WinPE. Since there is no software protection when you're outside the OS and you're free to remove anything you want entirely and block it from coming back. Plenty of guides online on how to do it, and if you use WinPE with Powershell 5.x loaded in you can even just grab a powershell script someone smarter than you wrote to do it for you. Black person.
>i blocked the telemetry ips hence why microsoft can't remotely re-install software on my pc nor launch health services

Support is ending next year.
If you're fine with the state of modern windows there is no saving you, just stay where you are.

And for the games that aren't native, how long is the process to get them running?
Some games have native versions but the windows one works better like Civilization 6. For that you can tell steam to make it use the windows version
For how much people complain, linux has come a long way
native doesn't really matter with the advances in wine and proton
it's not emulating, it's a compatibility layer
your games are still playing on bare metal, and some are even performing better than on Windows
the only thing you have to worry about is if you play huge AAA multiplayer games that actively block Linux users
>Why should I swap? I want to get away from Windows
You answered your own question.
>but I also want to play my stinking games.
Ok? Unless you want to play goyslop like genshin you're probably in the clear.
Try it and see how you go. You'll come back to Windows though like everyone does.
I switched during the initial coof panic because I had nothing better to do anyway, still haven't looked back. Now what?
Check those two boxes and most games will work. If that doesn't work, check protondb to see what other people did to get it working. It could be as simple as using a different version of proton or a launch option
Easy then. I just remember wine being a pain to set up like 12 years ago
Nta. I thought I might as well ask in this thread.
Do I need Wine along with Steam's proton?
I'm a linux noob but I've only used proton. I'm sure there are certain cases where you might need to
nope
proton is a fork of wine designed to be as just werks as possible. you should probably grab the latest version of proton-GE from protonup though because it distributes codecs that valve is legally unable to, for better compatibility with prerendered cutscenes
Energy companies hate him. With one simple trick he created his own star to power itself from its own heat.
>Do I need Wine along with Steam's proton?
if proton works, dont touch it is pretty much the thing.
I personally like double clicking some windows apps instead of manually adding shit to steam all the time. But you only need one of them.
Only if you want to play pirated games outside of steam. You may need proton-GE for some games if anything.
Some games also run better on Linux because of this compatility layer (Vulkan is better on many games and the compality layer fixes some directX issues)
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Windows-11-scores-dead-last-in-gaming-performance-tests-against-3-Linux-gaming-distros.778624.0.html
>I want to get away from Windows but I also want to play my stinking games.
you are able to do that for the most part.
If you can make yourself not boot back over to Windows for a week or so it suddenly makes sense and you don't want to go back.
at this point the only games that don't work are games specifically made to not work on it
>window pajeets are seething on every linux thread
has anyone tested if hell let loose works good now?
https://www.protondb.com/app/686810
woohoo
What version of linux should I install?
there are a lot of distros you can choose from.
I would suggest either
Linux Mint
Pop_OS
Nobara Linux
Ubuntu
there will not be that much difference in the end, but Nobara Linux has gotten the best performance out of these.
nobara is the most "out of the box" distro for gaming. you'll eventually switch, but it's one of the better starting points to dip your toes in linux. it's a modified fedora by the guy who made proton for steam.
just make sure to download the kde version and get the nvidia version if you're on nvidia card
>by the guy who made proton for steam
no
I personally don't want Linux to be popular.
it won't ever be popular
but anyone even thinking about switching is already a power user compared to your average person who would never even consider changing os in the first place
stupid Black folk, Linux is already popular, more than Mac OS X and Windows....in servers.
literally this shithole of a website (Ganker) is running in a shitty Linux distribution.
>MUH SERVERS
and? I never said we should gatekeep servers.
gaming thread
gaming board
anime web site
You know until Doom and DirectX the same was said of Windows. Gamers preferred DOS because it had less overhead and better support.
It's too late, the kernel is already rusted.
>I don't want it on the corporate radar.
Did you know that big corpo are the ones financing the Linux Kernel?
Microsoft
Google
Meta
RedHat
IBM
and more
All of those give money, developers or a mix of both for the Linux Kernel. Linux is already backed by corporations, anon.
It won't until Linux Black folk start designing it to be more user friendly, and provide easy to follow guides rather than saying "read the 3 trillion long page wiki to do this one simple thing."
alright, what was your problem with Linux or are you just saying things?
he got filtered by the one command line install
and decided linux was too hard because he couldn't read
or he was a mentally ill moron and decided to install software that fricked with HIS OS and bricked his computer
Ain't getting meaningfully more userfriendly than what we have currently.
If people can't figure out basic CLI, they are NGMI, cause linux will always be a moving target.
Maybe valve's arch distro is enough for smooth gaming, but for day to day computing you inevitably will have to be at least capable of navigating linux bullshit.
Not much point in PvE for me, cause my IRL friends are not into gaming, and my preferred PvP games are mostly behind moronic anticheat software. Imma just stick to whatever the frick singleplayer games i find interesting. There certainly are multiplayer titles available, but im just not interested in them.
Popular enough for support without getting popular enough to have the average distro gut itself for the every day user that never changes the default browser on anything.
>When are you going to switch?
Couple of years ago? Dunno, never tracked. Kinda miss multiplayer slop, cause it's fun to dunk on kids, but aside things seems pretty comfy for me. Mostly pirate and run stuff through bottles cause i decided to ditch steam/epic/whateverelse accounts too.
there's still multiplayer games on linux
deep rock galactic is a great co op game and there's always valve's shit but I don't care for pvp anymore since half the people who play online are cheaters
personally, i don't care if you choose to stay on the pajeet spyware system
anon
why do you have two 4090s?
is one just for gpu passthrough for the few games you actually need windows for?

Why the separate 1TB SSDs? Wouldn't it be better a single 4TB NVME or you do tasks that are too cache dependent?
He could be running RAID5 so that if any one of the SSDs dies he can still boot his computer like nothing happened.
Is it physically possible for GNU/Linux chads to stop winning?
No, because they'd have to start winning to be able to stop.
how do i play audio into my microphone with pulseaudio? i want to be able to talk while the sounds play
if i understood your correctly you want to feed random audio files and mic into your audio input? I'd probably look into jack, but don't take me on record with that. https://man.archlinux.org/man/jackd.1
https://kx.studio/Applications:Catia
yeah i remember using voicemeeter to be able to mix my piano and voice together into a single microphone device
Please stop telling morons to switch
morons will come inevitably, so long as microsoft continue enshittification of their OS and Gabe continue fund his single device linux based gaming communicator vision. I wonder when he will pull the trigger on LTE/5g enabled deck to actually make a splash and disrupt current status quo.
i don't care about losing windows altogether, it still handles some vidya better than loonix.
>Try to use wine, heroic, or any other launcher
>try proton
>try every setting fix listed on the internet
Never works. Ever.
Literally, why is Windows hated? You can turn the gay flags off and games just werk
what game didnt work? Please specify
Additionally, if you have specific questions or need assistance troubleshooting, feel free to share more information so that I can try to help you find a solution.
Thanks gpt-san
You're welcome! If you have any more questions or if there's anything else I can help you with, feel free to ask. Take care!
Most sane poster is an AI.
I switched back to Windows last year. Don't even remember what all games I tried. Some did work tbh, but several didn't and it was too tiring. If Windows becomes a subscription and proton will actually work with every game, i'd consider switching back.
bash output or that never happened
>he still uses bash

hmm well I'm playing a Windows game on my Steam Deck right now and all I did was click play so okay
sorry that you're cursed
>using Windows in 2024

I switched in 2019. Haven't used windows since.
so you just use a tty or what
Long way around for newcomers who don't wanna be dependent on steam and steam ways of doing things:
install protonup-qt
install latest proton version
install bottles
create prefix
install dependencies (dotnet, visual c++ redistributables etc.)
????

why is there a cup of soil in that shower?
It's visual pun on grounding.
I work around electricity, I'm more triggered by the shower head and the plug and the weird wiring all being together.
Shoddy shower heaters seems to be a thing in South America, i've chosen that pic since i mentioned Brazil.
True. Pic related is mine.
When was it that you realized 90% of Ganker today are not Americans?
Safety concerns aside is it even good? Does it maintain temperature? How's the flowrate?
Mine is shit cause it's old, but newer ones are a lot better. It's terrible at maintaining the temperature, especially right after you turn it on. It takes like 2 minutes before it settles.
0 safety concerns by the way
>linux users are poor brownoids
If you're a "poor brownoid" and you're on this website, you're most likely autistic and therefore more likely to use loonix

>not the first post from this IP
>cringe
>aur
"Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"
yeah yeah, use whatever you want, but you don't need lutris or bottles or whatever meme launcher is popular this week
you don't need aur either or some other meme repo popular this week, just build shit yourself bro
i am building it myself, that's what the aur is
not seeing any cmake commands tho
I've just described most visual way of doing it without it being specific to distribution/package manager.
you are tying yourself down to a specific package manager, namely red hat's flatpak
the bottles maintainers throw a fit if you dare to package it yourself
wine uses autoconf
Eh, didn't know that, im on nixos and it's in nixpkgs. Then lutris is probably way to go for GUI people.
again, you don't need a GUI for wine, double click the exe like you would on windows
"managing prefixes" is a bloat anti-feature from the days when wine's 64-bit mode was shit
I don't really care about couple of gigs of storage and some weeb bullshit i run require separate prefix and i don't want to switch my env variable each time i decide to run whatever japanese bullshit.
>i don't want to switch my env variable each time i decide to run whatever japanese bullshit
create a shell script with three lines:
#!/bin/bash
export LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
wine game.exe
double click the script file instead of the exe
you can do whatever you want but i'm just saying, you don't need to use a launcher on windows which automatically makes linux look worse
It's just particular way of me doing things. Yeah i can probably do things in a better way, but creating separate shell scripts for each game i download seems more cumbersome than just keeping separate prefix and having gui frontend to access it.
Yes, it's not effective, yes gui can clash with overall flow, yes i'd benefit from reading some docs. Im okay with it.
and not going to be the first shit this IP gives either
Are these IP's with us in the room right now?
your screenshot proves you're on windows so my brain is filtering out your posts from now on
Or just install lutris, download wine-ge from its gui, and you're GTG.

The absolute state...
Linux is for business critical application servers, not gaming.
No, Windows Server is for business critical application servers, not gaming.
Both are true. Consoles are for gaming.
In a few months, I don't want to change while finishing university, and have to troubleshoot something while I need my computer for an assignment. I'll setup an external harddrive to run Linux from, to get used to it, until then.
I just don't want to deal with the growing pains and learning curve, and deal with classes.
doing game tests on this fresh install on arch with an old ass Nvidia GPU and absolutely nothing is broken. Performance is worse (not by a big margin but still noticeable) of course but this is almost 10 years old GPU

Don't let these cultists deceive you

do you really think I'll abandon an OS that works flawlessly for me and move to some shit that is known to have less compatibility and complicate things just because you posted an obscure error I've never had?
no wonder linux can't get anywhere with that level of logic you guys handle

Impossible, all the sirs have told me that windows doesn't require troubleshooting.
windowschads, how are we going to cope not being able to play mech commander? I literally cannot sleep holding my tears thinking about it every night, we're missing out the greatest game ever made and every single day people try to play it but they can't

I don't understand why people get so worked up about it
>instead of wasting time rebooting
what are you talking about?
Rebooting to Windows to play games that already just work on Linux, something Ganker thinks is so essential for gaming that pants are pooped if I don't do it.

bro windows is the default for pc gaming, outside of these minority thread every single pc gaming screenshot is from windows
windows doesn't need validation because it's the norm, the same way straight people don't need pride parades to show that they exist, you're the ones desperately trying to show that your minority exists and matters
didn't read
>you're the ones desperately trying to show that your minority exists and matters
Not me. I just want to know why you're mad about it.

bad bad bit ill bite
windows is the place to go for PC gaming
Linux is trying to prove itself as a contender but always fails to do so.
>windows is the place to go for PC gaming
Agree
>Linux is trying to prove itself as a contender but always fails to do so.
None of those games are 30 years old, by the way, and Brigador's sprites look good.
it's hilarious how these losers act like snobs over having to make everything unnecessarily more tedious, then the moment they realize people don't want to move to linux because it's a waste of time they suddenly claim it's is more straightforward than windows
>only 2 clowns
>those two morons
the only reason to even have a windows computer around for me is just for changing settings on my mouse
it was worth since I saved 100$ instead of buying a logishit
hello
Does anyone with a G502 have this problem? When I log into >manjaro the lights on the mouse turn off and I have to hit the profile button to get back to my dpi settings. It's fricking annoying
>is just for changing settings on my mouse
piper doesn't work for you? kinda glad i fell for logishit meme
it was that and my 8bitdo controller making me keep windows around
I own one of the no name budget chinese wireless gaming mice that's 40$
You can update and configure 8bitdo with an Android phone
>8bitdo controller
there's an app for android
I don't own a phone[smart]
Wait a no name mouse has issues? Don't have to bother with android I ran 8bitdo's shit in lutris.
if I wanna change the polling rate I have to have the software
otherwise I can change dpi and connection type just fine
Ah I see. Usually simple software works fine with Lutris it could be worth a shot if you do want to swap over. Had to do that for a 3D printer until they made a native version.
I'll try it later but I have doubts since driver related stuff usually does not work
even my coolermaster keyboard in openrgb does not work still but I don't mind since I keep the lights off anyways or on one color
>linuxgays have to compete with people using an obsolete 14yo version of windows to pretend they're even
KEK
So far proton resolved a bunch of compatibility issues. Bating capital G "Gamers" into linux is kinda pointless imo, you either dig the whole MUH FREE AND LIBRE thing and games are a bonus activity or you don't and nothing can reasonably persuade you.
I'm slightly excited about NVK drivers though, it will probably push some people to switch once they are properly baked.
Why do you homosexuals insist on making people hate Linux?
Just give them the truth, what they might run into, potential problems etc.
You have a wife. You're 1000+ steps ahead of ever Linux user already.
Keep your head up, NVK is coming soon (tm)

btw, the The Finals apparently got Linxu support now
But i don't wanna install steam. It does look interesting though.
But have they fixed the chink cheating problem
that's impossible to fix
even dogshit co op games have cheating problems
every time my friends mention a problem they are having, i just casually throw out that i don't experience it on linux. adblock not working on youtube? works on my linux computer. steam taking up 3gb of ram? not on my linux computer. computer freezes when tabbing out of fullscreen games? not on my linux computer
>steam taking up 3gb of ram? not on my linux computer
3 gb of ram usage is my entire os, steam, and discord. Steam and discord are vloated pieces of shit.

They need to perform better code reviews or something, it floors me how one package update can break shit.
meant for
Linux has been treating me well, Steam Deck has been letting me play PC games.
All comfy, no brakes.
Y'know, I think when I finally get my new build up and running I'll give Linux a shot

Year of the Linux tractor
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Open-ISOBUS-File-Server
PC will be an irrelevant platform by the time Linux overtakes Windows
open source community should focus on liberating whatever comes after PC
mobile seems to be even more fricked up than PC
you have open source Android, which is running under a proprietary layer of Google shit, and locked down hardware is preventing you from installing new OS
would ooen source community have more luck fightibg for freedom of mobile devices?
>j-just 2 more weeks guys, i swear!!
I'm a dev and linux user (at work)
Let me give you my reasons:
- My bluetooth controller doesn't work
- Desktop envs are all ugly and janky
- A lot of games don't work
Not ready yet
What distro do you use for work?
And what games don't work?
when ableton and all my plugins runs natively
Because I'm not poor, Linux is for people who use laptops with 2GB of RAM and some integrated or shitty GPU. Windows is for real people, people who work and don't have time for shit.
>have poor time management skills
>brags about it
I am confused
>HDR
>apps works with Oculus Rift

>Dolby surround
So, basically never. Anon, just pirate Windows, install O&OShutUp10 and turn off everything not listed as green. It works just fine this way.
Linux will never be able to compete until they launch a paid gaming distro (which I would GLADLY pay for).
