this garbage is a certified poser-core slop for zoomers larping as boomers
nah its pretty sweet actually
>Whhhoooaaa you can like talk to every npc about their personal problems and what they ate for breakfast and what color their shit was last night
>Never mind that the world is generic D&D slop, or the directionlessness of its overworld, no that's actually good because it invites the player to do their own exploring, it totally isn't archaic development trust me bro, it's totally not just wasting your time
>Never mind that the world is generic D&D slop
It's Renaissance Italy, it's closer to PoE than DnD
>the directionlessness of its overworld
The game comes with a map. You are supposed to use the physical map to navigate.
Behold, sub-human plebs trying to besmirch the very foundation of the genre.
Idiot.
this. the only good ultima game is ultima underworld. everything else is just hipster bullshit
No, playing Ultima 4-7 is one of the most amazing experiences you can have in video games, it's a very cool series.
>ultima underworld
garbage and anyone who says it's the best is 100% poser because UU2 was better in every aspect but posers never played nor watched a youtuber retrospective video on it
UU2's story/setting were subpar to UU
Origin never really utilized The Guardian effectively
I prefer the first game. I liked the different locations of 2, but it just wasn't as fun. The etherial void sucked ass too.
>UU2 was better in every aspect
UU1 is a classik dungeon crawler like the goldbox games. UU2 westerosi ISEKAI!!!
>UU2 is westerosi ISEKAI!!!
Stop writing like a damn Black person.
Mindrotten creature that can only communicate in buzzwords, your opinion has negative weight.
I liked it too OP. These fricks just hate RG.
The best one by far. I replay it every once in a while and no game seems to hit me like Ultima V does. The world is so fun and interesting to explore, you actually want to talk to the NPCs to see what their deal is, what connections they have to various other NPCs and quests. The combat is finally kind of fun in this one and probably the best combat out of any of the Ultimas. The utter pain in the ass that the underworld can be makes it very rewarding. I wish technically simple but rich games like this were made now.
I loved delivering companions to Blackthorn and seeing their ashes at the codex and taking Saduj all the way to Lord British. Best Ultima game.
Meh.
It was mid.
>Verification not required
Captcha agrees with me
You can tell they started getting serious about this with 4 when they dedicated the whole game to the virtues. No longer being confined to just goodies they actively made efforts to make their game lore matter outside the goodies. So after refining it 5 comes along and blows people's minds for the time and even today the charm of Ultima captivates people.
I was filtered.
because art is not linear
Which of these are worth playing in current year for someone who’s never played any of them and has no nostalgia for the series, but is old enough to appreciate its contemporaries?
Start with Ultima 4 with the xu4 source port. You don't have to finish it, (it's punishing in an extremely tedious way and grindy) but it's important for setting up U5 and worth at least clearing a few dungeons/town puzzles. Write down EVERYTHING. You should have notepad open and be keeping a journal for everything you learn in every single town.
Thanks for the tip, anon. Looks like these are on sale on GOG for a couple bucks. When does the series peak and go to shit? IIRC 8 or 9 or so was bad, I remember reading about it as a kid.
Should I grab 4/5/6/7 and Underworld 1+2?
>Looks like these are on sale on GOG for a couple bucks
I don't really see the appeal of the gog version. After xu4 you're probably going to want to fan patch 5 and 6 and play 7 in Exult, so all you get is the base games with none or the work being done and i wouldn't want to give money to cdpr or EA. Do not play the gog version of U4, it's the worst version.
>After xu4 you're probably going to want to fan patch 5 and 6 and play 7 in Exult
I had imagined that I'd need to provide the game files. Is that not the case? 4/5/6/7 are on sale for like, three bucks for all four.
>I had imagined that I'd need to provide the game files
It's abandonware, just download them off the internet. This is like a non-issue lol
b-b-b-but would the avatar of virtue really start off his holy quest by downloading old games off the internet??
If you have better advice for the best way to play, I will consider it. I bought 4/5/6/7 for three bucks.
Play them without patches is my advice, but do whatever you want. If you need qol in these games, you aren't really playing them.
You definitely need to patch Ultima 4. That's not good advice at all.
I didn't patch it. It had no issues.
Do you played it in an incredibly stupid way and feel left out, so now you have to drag others down with you. Got it.
Perhaps the two of you could articulate
1. What perceived issues are addressed by fan patches, and why they are important for a new player to fix
2. What perceived issues are addressed by fan patches, and why they are unimportant, and a new player is better off playing the game as released, instead
for the edification of others, rather than childish shit like
>Do you played it in an incredibly stupid way and feel left out, so now you have to drag others down with you
The GOG version doesn't even have a functional OST, getting that to work requires additional setup. Features that were previously covered by user-made macros decades ago, such as casting, are not so easily applied now, and are instead replaced by the U5 casting system, which is functionally identical to using a macro. In the original game several conversations are inaccessible, the open spell does the opposite of what it was coded to do, and one of the virtues can possibly be softlocked very, very easily, making the game incompletable. Additionally, there are like 20 versions of Ultima 4, so it's useful to have a universal "best" version which is free of issues and highly modular based on the user's preferences. The assertion that xu4 is buggy already tells me the poster is arguing in bad faith, as it's the only version that /doesn't/ have bugs, so it can be safely assumed he never played the game at all.
You don't need an OST. I-III were great and had no OST. You don't need macros. It doesn't take long to mix spells and your fingers get into a rhythm that makes it go fast. No you don't need 99 of every spell in the game. The gog version has no game breaking bugs. I'm assuming the softlocked virtue is valor. You should reach max valor long before you reach max level, so it's a non issue. You are patching the game for your own issues, not the game's issues.
Thinking there is a universal best Ultima is ridiculous. If you like the games, I would urge you to try all versions. Having bugs doesn't make a game unplayable. Learn to adapt. That's part of the fun of the older Ultima games.
You are the one who has not played these games, just a knockoff version that caters to your personal shortcomings. Play however you want, but it's shitty to potentially rob others of the experience of playing the real thing because you assume they share your faults and don't actually enjoy retro games.
>You don't need an OST
Ultima has one of the best soundtracks in video games, like iconicly good. I'm not replying to you again, enjoy your dead thread.
And you get plenty of that OST when you play Ultima V and on.
This isn't my thread and you can leave whenever you want. It's nothing to get so upset about. Every Ultima thread turns into this shit.
>Every Ultima thread turns into this shit.
Yeah because you repeatedly post incredibly stupid shit in every thread and everyone that actually knows what they're talking about gets annoyed and leaves.
You didn't even have a rebuttal.
I'm not the same person, moron. You aren't interesting to talk to. Leave this place and don't ever return. You have posted nothing of value and are intentionally spreading disinformation. You aren't funny. You aren't smart. You're just an annoying moron.
>disinformation
lol, lmao
This whole back and forth started with an outright lie that xu4 was buggy and ended with you claiming that it was okay the game had a critical soft lock and was missing the soundtrack. Just have a nice day dude
You aren't replying to the same anon and I never said xu4 is buggy. Exult however is a buggy mess.
I'm not the anon you are arguing with. I'm the anon who wanted to play 4/5/6/7 for the first time and was asking for advice on which versions to play, before this turned into an autistic slapfight.
If that's true then don't play them. You're not wanted.
>If that's true then don't play them. You're not wanted.
lol, lmao
It's too late. I bought them for $3, and I will play them. You are powerless to stop me.
It's been 5 days and you haven't even started, no you aren't. Just frick off kid
>thinks someone not having infinite free time to play computer games means someone is a "kid"
Oh no no no no no. It's moronic
If you have time to post, you have time to play.
Fair, you got me there. I'm in the middle of some other games, I'll prob give em a shot this summer. They're in the queue and I got notepad++ ready and waiting to write shit down.
>other games
what games
Nothing good. I can promise you that.
Commander Keen 1-6
Filtered.
So the "other guy" wanted to take his ball and go home and you just happen to be a different childish anon? That's fine. You don't have a rebuttal either.
>disinformation
I supported my position. You acted like a narcissistic baby.
>I supported my position
Where, you moron? You said nothing of consequence, added nothing to the discussion. No wonder no one wants to talk to you, all you do is squirm and make moronic statements when you get called out. How does one argue with a moron that doesn't even know how to make arguments?
I can't help you with your literacy, anon.
You're pretty heated over a game patch.
Maybe take a break from the internet.
You have never played Ultima in your life. Why post something like this?
The GOG version is supposed to have music. It's incorrectly emulated. What is wrong with you, larping moron? Why can't we just have normal discussions? Why does some moron always have to die on some absurd hill?
Ultima IV on PC DOS has never had music. The patch adds music from a different version of the game.
>The patch adds music from a different version of the game.
yes and that's pretty gud.
What does he get from playing the absolute worst version of the game?
Are you fricking moronic? The patches don't add QoL you fricking fool, they mainly fix bugs that cause intended functionality to just not work or possible softlocks, as well as add the midi music back in. Dumb frick
Why give bad advice?
That is the correct advice.
>b-b-b-but would the avatar of virtue really start off his holy quest by downloading old games off the internet
He wouldn't give money to these guys:
?si=D325v-0Vou_P5qUf
>sale on GOG for a couple bucks.
U4 was free and can still be found free in various places.
Electronic buttholes aren't gonna sue you for downloading an IP they stopped caring about.
Underworlds might be worth buying if you're an idiot at setting up DOSBox. or maybe it MIGHT encourage NightDive to do a "remake"(debugged version) of it.
what he said.
horrible idea. mainline ultimas were very buggy and the ARRRRR! versions might be old and unpatched.
Ultima IV, V and VI are the essential ones. just remember as the other anon said, you need to write things down.
Ultima VII simplifies things a bit and turns combat into chaos, easy chaos, but chaos nonetheless. Part II is more a bullshit adventure game.
Underworld I and II aren't really a part of the main series, but they're nice in other ways, especially the dungeon design.
1-3 are janky and hard to play if you aren't used to older games. 8 is better than it was, but its still the odd game out. 9 is trash. The two Worlds of Ultima games are weird.
>tries to shittalk Ultima.
>instead describes a game that sounds nothing like Ultima.
Okay...
Okay, xu4 for 4, exult for 7. What are the recommended fan patches for 5 and 6 and what are the pros/cons of each?
You just use Pix's Ultima patcher for the rest. These are for bug fixes like an NPC not triggering a dialogue line in Ultima 5 which is a critical clue for the main quest path and the like, as well as option QoL shit which you can decide whether you want or not yourself.
xu4 is buggy as frick, just emulate the SMS port.
meant to
The sms port is not an accurate recreation of the game, dialogue, the biggest feature of the game, does not work the same and is dumbed downed to work like morrowind. Dungeons also do not work the same. There is absolutely zero bugs in xu4, I have completed the game from start to finish with no bugs. Do not ever post on this board EVER again and I really genuinely mean that.
>dialogue, the biggest feature of the game, does not work the same and is dumbed downed to work like morrowind. Dungeons also do not work the same.
They are both objectively better in the sms port.
How is the game automatically solving dialogue puzzles for you better lol
The main evolution of Ultima 4 is the talking. If you remove that there's no reason to even play 4. The most enjoyable part of playing the series are seeing these huge evolutions in gameplay between each game in their original unmolested glory.
>recommended fan patches for 5
Patch the gog version with https://github.com/Fenyx4/UltimaPatcher/
>and 6
ScummVM (Nuvie)
Don't patch Ultima games.
>5
>The beginning
Just like Fallout 3 am I right?
Patch whatever you want. Who give a frick. You aren't going to finish it anyway.
>here are these classic old games that defined the genre, which I will praise and idolize for their trailblazing influence, but also act like a fricking Black person when someone new wants to get into them
You, and those like you, are why the board is shit.
>here are these classic old games that defined the genre,
>let me just patch and mod them until they no longer resemble the same game
Everyone I know played the apple II version
>. how can turn based tile adventuring peak at the very beginning?
well no. Underworld spinoffs were totally superior, but they flopped in sales.
>Underworld spinoffs were totally superior
the ideas behind UU were innovative, but the technology just wasn't there to make the end result palatable
>make the end result palatable
then play Arx Fatalis, the fake UW3.
and System Shocks if you don't mind scifi horrorshows.
though IMO Deus Ex is pretty superior System Shock in game mechanics and spirit.
Arx Fatalis was decidedly more refined technologically, but the writing just... I dropped it at the quest where you need to give orc chieftain diarrhea so that you can talk to him at the shitter.
SS1 graphics made me nauseous, SS2 was alright but it felt more like story-heavy FPS than imsim.
>I dropped it at the quest where you need to give orc chieftain diarrhea so that you can talk to him at the shitter.
well you could just kill 'em all.
I feel that older rpgs have the same advantage as older literature when it comes to fantasy. There was less public consciousness of standard magical pop culture like 'fireballs' and 'adventurers' back then. The economy of resources that it took to make a game also made explanations of magic and mysticism occur less literally and less often due to less room for expository lore. Less becomes more in terms of fantasy lore. Like midichlorians in star wars, fantasy constantly suffers from being overexplained. A degradation of the genre that has been ongoing since long before reddit quips, marvelization etc,
