Back in 3rd Ed, plastic Tac Marines were £1; a full Tac Squad for £10 or that 5-man Combat Squad for £5. Even with inflation, that's only like £18.50 for the full 10, so why the frick is a Tac Squad now £35?

My dude, tons of Oldhammer models are STILL cheaper than their equivalents in current 40k.

GW is going for the Price = Prestige effect. Idiots, anti social shut ins and the judgementally challenged like to blow their time and wealth on useless things in an attempt to signal how successful they are. GW models are like a rapper's bling, spoilers on Ford Escorts, or Trump Victory Sneakers, the buyer gets recognition and worth from other pathetic buyers, but disdain and pity from everyone else.

That's blatantly untrue. I started the game with Assault on Black Reach which was $60 back in 2008 for everything in pic related. In Mantic's defense - they see what people are willing to pay and increase their prices to match.

Retail was $75 USD for 46 models on the same month of the 2008 housing crash

It has the same buying power as $105.73 nowadays.

You can get the Warhammer 40k starter set for 10th for $93.50 on Amazon which contains 38 models.

Slightly less? Sure but they're also more detailed.

comparing costs in the past with inflation to costs now doesn't work without taking into account that wages have stagnated and not gone up with inflation, so not only are your dollars worth less you don't even have more of them than someone with the same job 20 years ago.

Real wage growth has stagnated (Though there has been *some* growth), but there has absolutely been nominal wage growth.

You add near stagnant growth along with insane cost increases in foundational aspects of life (home, education, healthcare etc) and you've fricked the ability for people to live better lives.

Losing real pensions and the like was also another huge blow. People now have to manually save for retirement as opposed to getting a fixed income for life once they retired. Now you need to save up about a half a million to retire.

I've ordered from about 10 different ones over the years, they were all good, worst was AA quality, best was better than the FW original it was copied from, just get a test mini or two if you are unsure, the new stuff now is identical to GW

You could burn yourself with 3 scammers sending you nothing and it would still be cheaper than buying from GW

If you ensure that payment is handled through a middleman like paypal then the absolute worst thing that can happen is you waste like 20 bucks and don't get anything

The individual character models have definitely gotten silly expensive. They're on par with the cost of entire boxes from just a few years ago.

I bought the heroes of the chapter set with 5 captains for £20 before it went out of stock... the same amount one single plastic captain was being sold for.

Some promo stuff is still alright, £120 for Leviathan felt like good value considering how much you got. However there's issues with just doing that, most obviously that you'd struggle to make a coherent force with just box sets.

Inb4 poorgay, just because I can blow £25 on a single miniature and not worry about it doesn't mean I cant blow it on something more fun.

GW is still selling out of most of what they produce and their FOMO hype machine model of pumping out barely supported minimal releases is working. It's going to get worse before it gets better. The best things people can do if they are unhappy with GW's pricing is to stop buying GW products, and if someone in your local store is using proxies, don't give them a hard time for it. Or better yet, to try other wargaming systems entirely. There are a lot of very fun rulesets out there that are miniature agnostic or at the very least aren't several hundred dollars of plastic to get into.

In the past, we could shit all over people we didn't like to stop them joining the hobby. Now that has become socially unacceptable for whatever the frick reason we have to find another way. The best we've come up with so far is to price out entry. The grogs will keep going no matter what because they've already sold their souls, as long as it's too expensive for other people to start up we get to enjoy our game in peace.

Obviously then it'll die off when the grogs die off, but as I'm one of those grogs I'll be dead by the time that becomes a problem, so zero fricks given.
