I was going to say that they introduced Psychic Surge just so CHARIZARD wouldn’t be hit by Accerlock but CHARIZARD isn’t protected by terrain so I guess have no arguement
What appears to have happened is that, in order to ensure that the majority of Alola Pokemon would be VGC viable but without giving them increased BSTs, they gave 90% of them below average speed stats in order to give them above average stats everywhere else. (above average for their BST, not above an actual overall average) And they did this regardless of the "lore" associated with the specific Pokemon, eg. Vikavolt is supposed to be fricking FAST.
These speed changes appear to have been last minute as well, because when it was first revealed on the official website it was stated that Alolan Sandshrew and Alolan Sandlash both have lore describing them as SLOWER than regular Sandshrew. But that isn't the case, both of them have identical speed stats to the originals. But both of them have lore making specific reference to how and why they are SLOWER than the original. And the reason they'd change this for the final game is obvious, Sandslash has a x2 speed ability for Sandstorm, but it only has 65 speed to begin which means the boost isn't enough to actually make it faster than everything. Alolan Sandslash has the same ability but for hail, but making it slower than the original would mean it would have even more difficulty ensuring that it outsped opponents and would make it even less viable. So they went against the lore that was already written and just made it the same speed so it would hit the same speed tier.
And we all know how that turned out. Seems like Kommo-o originally not being able to learn Close Combat and midnight form Lycanroc having 80/75/75 bulk while having 82 Speed isn't a viable way to curb the powercreep. And it only serves to piss off people who like these Pokemon.
>curbing powercreep by making the new stuff as weak as possible and not making a single move to nerf any of the old stuff, meaning that the powercreep still exists
Galaxybrain move from Gamefreak, as usual.
And it's especially hollow considering what they introduced in later generations.
Honestly, Game Freak needs to start buffing weak Pokemon because the powercreep is past the point of no return. I'm not asking for insane shit like Ledian from Radical Red, just reasonable buffs that are not a +10 to an irrelevant stat (but I would give Ledian a usable Attack around 80 - 90 to stay in line with it being a route 1 bug that falls of later on). And Meganium being weak to where it's outclassed by NFEs in spite of being a starter Pokemon is fricking unacceptable.
Buffing weak shit is not the answer this time around imo (albeit in some cases it is deserved and they have been tweaking some older underwhelming mons to try to give them some sort of niche), nerfs are actually the answer. You'd probably need to remove the hidden abilities off of like... 75% of pokemon, remove about half the signature moves, and for some of the overwhelmingly powerful mon, grab 20 points off their attacking stat and stuff it in the opposite attacking stat, or take a bunch of speed off everything and pump it into defenses.
I think 100 should be considered a high stat, but nowadays you need like, at least 130 to make anyone look your way.
>Buffing weak shit is not the answer this time around imo
Even if Pokemon strong like Garchomp were nerfed you'd still have Pokemon like Tropius that everyone wishes has better stats.

Some pokemon should always be stronger than others, the games and world would be a lot more boring otherwise, but I think they just need to reduce the delta between shit and good. They minmaxed newer pokemon too hard on top of giving everything powerful abilities compared to the original, often less consequential abilities that made up lost of the dex in gen 3. And there's no way we can even think of making some slight adjustments to give people reasons to want to use weaker pokemon (even if they aren't the best choice and they're just karengayging) until we tone the strong stuff way the frick down. Start giving everything the Gengar treatment of swapping their abilities out for something useless while also spreading out their stats more evenly.

>Some pokemon should always be stronger than others
Well yeah but there is line between "resonably weak" and "Game Freak made it shit for the sake of it", and many Pokemon crossed it.
Note that I am not talking about Pokemon that are purposefully weak for lore reasons like Magikarp, Cosmog, or Calyrex WITHOUT Glastrier or Spectrier.

They're already that, and then some, because GameFreak's mentality a lot of the time is >"Let's make this thing suck as much as humanly possible!"
These are the stats for a fully evolved Pokemon. There is absolutely no justifiable excuse for them to be this bad, and there's a ton of similar cases.
The people who come up with the design are different from those who give it stats, typing, and lore, and don't communicate at all; that's why the lady who designed frillish was mad her regal king/queen jellyfish became ghostly killers that sink ships.
Drampa? Because at least you could get Vikavolt before Victory Road. Drampa is in the last area of the game AND is surrounded by Pokemon strong against it.
I've been using Vikavolt since he came out and I really enjoy him. He's my favorite electric type and I prefer him being slow and semi physically tanky than just the boring generic fast sweeper all you guys seem to want him to be. If he was literally just electric Yanmega it would be so boring. You guys realize he has 90 def and 145 special attack right? Stop b***hing about his speed and figure out something else to do with him. He even has Sticky Web now, you pretty much have to be a moron to not be able to make use of a Vikavolt on your team.
I run Zoom Lens on him for that reason. Zoom Lens for more "consistency" or Quick Claw for more rng. If you want to bring out the full potential of Vikavolt you have to take a chance somewhere.
I used him in trick room doubles in USUM with telepathy Oranguru. 145 sp. attack Discharge twice in a row with Instruct rekts. Also tried a bulky assault vest-charge beam set which worked alright as well.
Should have gotten No Guard as a Hidden Ability. It deserved to be the thing that could blow out 100% accurate Zap Cannons. OH WAIT they had to frick that one up because it has fricking Guillotine so now it can never get No Guard. No really. Thanks.

Clod gets by on really good stat placement, typing, and abilities
Besides Pelipper though he's pretty much the only one. Azumarill is technically sub-450 but you know, Pure Power
it's just like you!
The Gen 7 stats datamines were real funny
What were they fricking thinking
Either playing into the island time stereotype or intentionally keeping things slower than CHARIZARD.
Lots of things are faster than Charizard.
>Muh CHARIZARD
>In the gen where they introduced a Rock-type priority move
lol

nah vikavolt is fine. go play gradius to makes sense.
It’s a railgun powered by an electric battery
Faster than Vikavolt
sexy robot bug

Why did gen 7 end up so fricking slow, anyway?
Supposedly it was to curb the powercreep.

Midnight Lycarock only needs Dynamipunch/crosschop to be good.

Proof that the Pokemon artists and programmers don't ever actually communicate.
You don't move particularly fast in shmups.
The people who come up with the design are different from those who give it stats, typing, and lore, and don't communicate at all; that's why the lady who designed frillish was mad her regal king/queen jellyfish became ghostly killers that sink ships.
Has there ever been a Pokemon so fricked over? Even its evolution method was a slap in the face.
Drampa? Because at least you could get Vikavolt before Victory Road. Drampa is in the last area of the game AND is surrounded by Pokemon strong against it.
I also enjoyed how it went from a physical attacker to special upon evolution.

All the had to do is make No Guard not work on OHKO moves, those already don't follow the normal rules of accuracy anyway.
I run Zoom Lens on him for that reason. Zoom Lens for more "consistency" or Quick Claw for more rng. If you want to bring out the full potential of Vikavolt you have to take a chance somewhere.
Unironically give it Speed Boost to match its Bug brethren
It wouldn't be so bad if the dex didn't have you believe it was fast.
Are there currently any pokemon with under 450 base stats that is viable in OU?
Pelipper, although obviously without drizzle it would go right back to PU
Clod gets by on really good stat placement, typing, and abilities
