This is honestly why I think AAA games have flopped left and right in the last year, and why budget games like Helldivers, Palworld and Lethal Company have had such success. People aren't willing to pay that much for games anymore.

I live in the third world and it costs 90$ here. Wish I lived where you live.

        >budget games like Helldivers, Palworld and Lethal Company have had such success
I wonder if AAA devs are ever going to take note of this or if they will just continue pumping out garbage for full price.
You'd think that if they were going to develop shit games they would charge a shit game price for it.

          Anonymous

Here's the thing: they can't justify making small games because their development teams are now bloated to include 1000s of people (no, the recent layoffs wasn't enough).
So considering the high number of people working on games and the long development times, they have to put a big pricetag to try and get some profit back.
This shit is unsustainable and only now we are starting to see the cracks.
The simple solution would be to split all the teams into multiple smaller projects, of about 200 developers each. But corporate moves so slow we'll see this change only after multiple studios will go bankrupt.

Of course I have, I grew up and live in the boonies. There are many ancient houses here still maintained by the locals. All I'm saying is that you aren't richer than farmers from 1800s if you're a modern student. You can have many quality of life improvements, but their value is very much not a farm's equal.

Maybe in Commiefornia where a Big Mac is $14. It seems you’re either stuck making shit wages but having time for hobbies. Or earning high wages but having to work 50-60 hours a week to do so.

Minimum wage in NY was $8 a decade ago. Now it is almost double. So getting a game now should take about half the time despite the $10 increase.

Yes, complaining about $10 for games is stupid especially since the quality of games has increased drastically since when they were $60 on SNES. The quality of water, Big Macs and quality of life near apartments decreased.

You don't buy them. There is no justification for it. Not even inflation.
That's the only way to make it clear. Stop paying for overpriced AAA slop. There's MAYBE one AAA game worth playing every year, and you'll hear by word of mouth if it is actually good.

Studios b***h and moan about costs of development but none of them want to ever talk about economies of scale, where there are hundreds of millions more people playing games of every genre than ever before, so the market they tap into is so much more massive than in the past 10-20 years, so even if they are making 5 less dollars per sale, they are making 10 times the sales so it doesn't fricking matter.
Games can charge 20-30 bucks with little to no monetization and still make money hand over fist. They are only charging more because they are greedy frickers trying to appease shareholders, thats all there is to it.

    >how do you justify this
I only buy good games or wait til they’re 20/30 dollars.
I’m far more bothered by the rising cost of food. A good $70 game could last me 100+hrs before I get bored, meanwhile my $50 grocery bill has grown to $80 and I’m actually getting less in many instances.

  51. 3 months ago

You can’t. Problem is nerds are famously financially illiterate so they’ll always line up to be first to play the latest slop because FOMO. It’s hard to convince people, especially Americans, if they don’t buy the product the price will go down. Supply and demand.

    >Inflation
    >Studios constantly using and developing new tech to use (it costs a frickton just in equipment to simulate light particles).
    >Devs (programmers, animators, artists, musicians, voice actors, and other staff in general such as marketing, accounting, heads of staff, etc) asking for more money thanks to inflation and decent working conditions (sometimes a raise too, if they think they are doing a good job).
    >Most of AAA marketing teams not being able to adapt to current trends without looking like morons or oldfarts, so they end up with the most expensive and unnecessarie method as possible.
    >Have to convince investord that their funds re safe, so you require even more money to just store away so you can pay back their investment in case they become morons and want their money back before it is even invested.
    >Have to also have enough money for maintainece and repairs, and other costs.
    >There are also other costs in oegal fees, and using intelectual properties, so now you have to hire lawyers as well.
    >Shit somehow ends up costing millions already because you need a lot of people.
    >Make the shitty cross graph to determinate sales and costs after making a speculation on how our market looks like (manchilds), end up with that amount
    >Do not take into account how much fun can players actually have, because these homosexuals only care about how does the game look.
    Its simply not profitable anymore.
The AAA market its crashing because all of this and more.
Its simply more profitable now to make indies using outdated tech, less resources, less personal, less budget, all while you focus on your idea with trial and error until it works, and you focus on your target market (still manchilds, but with ceartain acquired tastes), and then work and change from there.
After that its just a matter of enough people liking your game and publicity for becoming best seller of the month and get enough revenue to just do your own thing until popularity dies down.

      >it costs a frickton just in equipment to simulate light particles
If you're referring to raytracing (or more generally BVH-acceleration), it's actually a huge timesaver from development standpoint once you don't need to put time also doing it the old way. Material-based lighting is super easy compared to all the tricks you need to pull off normally.

It is not, until you take into account that in a major project deemed to be a AAA game you might need between 50 to 200 of these units, with working spare parts available for small fixes if things broke down (or at least the funding for those parts).
The accounting will have to take into account the cost of all units, take into account how long does it take for each part to brake down and its cost.
This eventually goes into the graph to calculate costs, which will definetly impact on the price of the game.
They might be able to cost it at the start of the project, but if you do not have emergency funds or start to charge customers with preorder shits and bonuses, you are definetly going to start to run into some problems on the work place as things start to degrade between months and years.
They do not develop everything on a single PC, they use a ton frick of them, and depending on whatever they are doing shit might be breaking down all the time.

the single largest contributor to cost ballooning is budget tallying in the millions, and the easiest way to pop that bubble is to hang all marketers. They single-handedly cost their respective team more than the those actually making the game.
Ad space and celebrity shilling isn't cheap, and the best way to sell units to normalgays is to advertise to them. And the sad reality is that the ROI on dumping millions of dollars into ad campaigns have been shown to work, price increases are just a byproduct of hang-wringing to maximize that payoff vs those who drop out due to being harder to manipulate.
Games are no longer made to be fun (although developers may still aspire to create something enjoyable), they're cynically made to be sold by the publishers that only care about big number.

      >one man indieprojects can essentially set themselves up for life if they get everything right
      >the only costs they end up accounting for is their own and whatever the publishers want in regards to their cuts
The next funding model is being prototyped now with Stormgate and was initially pioneered with Scam Citizen. You will use the fanaticism of cultivated consumers from the last 30 years to set the bedrock with free advertising and starting capital. While you receive top ups from private equity firms and whatever Uncle Fink is working next. Your loyalty program for the starting cultists will not be payed out in dollars but in Discord badges, socially approved titles and livestreams with the developers. Your mere presence to the unwavering faithful is reward enough. Filling in the spiritual void that modern society hasn't been able to fill with cheap goods and broken promises.
