The first 3 games were retconned with 4. In 4, Olimar goes on his first trip and fails to make it home.
He got all 30 parts. He had to turn the ship around because Moss snuck aboard and SOMETHING caused him to crash again.

I don't know about this timeline, but in the old one Olimar's ship was his own custom-designed vehicle.
It's honestly really sweet. Olimar manages to stay likeable even though it's been 20 years.
