Dont think this is their best game, Nioh 2 is still up there, let alone NGB. But this feels like a culmination of things. Yes, it might take things from other games, but despite the evident "cheapness" of team NINJA manufacture, this game is really solid. The open world stuff is designed with the simplicity of PS2 era games, but with all the QoL of modern standards, engine looks dated but the scenary is great (great art direction, I think), I do think its probably the best designed levels they've ever had. The things that are taken from other games are well implemented in the whole structure of the game, its not just "lets take this popular things", theres an understanding of why those elements worked in their respective projects and how they could use it in a very "team NINJA" experience. The game is very "videogamey" in a good way, everything is simple and straightforward so that you have an excuse to enjoy the combat in many different ways, with all the options there are between your weapons and styles, enemy variety (all humans but Jesus, the amount of different encounters this game has), the setting (both aesthetically and in geometry and platforming elements). And you actually learn a thing of two about Japan during that era (probably the most interesting Encyclopedia they've ever had)

Nioh 2 is only their best game because they had the first games already great systems to jump off of, for a new thing it feels the most realized out of everything they've done since NG2. The encounter design is so good in this game and you can tell their ninja gaiden 4 is on the way

    Rotr > Nioh 2

Nioh 2 has slightly better combat

ROTR makes up for it by having a way better story and set of characters. Don't get me wrong though, it's still only like a 6/10 in that category, Nioh 2s story was downright fricking laughably bad. Doesn't stop it from being a great game though because the story stays in the background most of the time, I'd just put ROTR a notch ahead.

It's okay. Definitely TN's worse game. It seems like they're trying to refine some sort of template that lets them churn out games at high speeds. Every game since Nioh 2 has diluted the formula and added in generally unfun things that are easier to implement and tank a games individuality.

First it martial arts replacing skills and stats becoming streamlined.
Now it's martial arts replacing skills AND combos and stats becoming more inconsequential.

Weapons lost individuality in Wo Long and are even worse in Ronin with every weapon hitting the same, having the same stagger (seemingly).

I am glad the open world isn't as invasive as other open worlds and you can easily figure shit out on your own without googling but it's just not fun. The fantasy elements of Nioh and Wo Long gave the games charm. In this it's just on to the next shitty village or copy paste buildings to kill the same boring humans with the same boring moves, weapons, and behaviors.

I'm only level 12 with a lot of the first area cleared but I am hoping to stick with it. Not terribly pleased with the fact the combat styles are drip fed and some bond locked. I'm also REALLY not fond of enemies seemingly having zero stagger while I, even full Charm, get topped by a breeze. It's making be wonder what even is the point in the heavier weapons since things like polearm and odachi don't stagger any more than other weapons.

Also anyone notice the beast tame is broken? When I tame a beast it just sits there.

Stats getting streamlined is a good thing, hopefully in the next game they remove the shitty levelling system all together

        Anonymous

No it isn't. If you want Ass Creed go play Ass Creed. This is a huge step down for TN's games. Being able to stat and define the character how YOU want to play is the fun part of these games. Ronin still has a best build (almost certainly % dmg to afflicted) but instead of a wide array of viable builds Ronin has 1.

          Anonymous

Stats in nioh are literally meaningless, ronin has no builds at all, soon we'll be back to normal video games like ninja gaiden 2

            Anonymous

            >Stats in nioh are literally meaningless
No they aren't they let you define the weapons and armor you used, how effective you are at different things, and you also had skill trees that fed into these builds.

Ronin doesn't have builds, kind of. It does have a shadow of the elemental builds from Nioh and there's a flat % damage increase to afflicted enemies. So, really, you don't HAVE to do it but you're gimping yourself significantly by neglecting the one core build it does have.

But all that aside this is merely a taste of the numerous things TN has made worse with each new game.

Aisu-Kage katana style is seriously way too fun, it puts every other stance to shame man, it's crazy. Can be so aggressive with it and all the animations are cool. A lot of styles just don't feel as good with either too simple/boring moves or moves that feel worthless.

i've yet to use a martial art that felt good and was better than just slapping away at their block for ki damage.

        Anonymous

Some MAs are really good at dealing ki damage vs blocks but otherwise the increase in ki damage isn't crazy when theyr'e panicked. I like Aisu-Kage tho because all of it's moves are 2 hit and it's basic forward and charge attack have good range/tracking to keep up with dodge happy enemies. It has an aggressive multi-hit counterspark. All of it's martial arts are useful with 1 being a really fast advancing attack that can also situationally sidestep some moves. Another does good damage with a 2nd part for hyperarmor aggression. Last MA is just a straight up better alternative to normal grab attack when enemies are exhausted and it might be even better when upgrade with master.

        I love it.

If I don't do it, no one else will. Game is really awesome.

I loathe that TN want to make games where you fight a bunch of enemies at once, but still refuse to let go of the awful souls lock on. Bring back soft lock on NOW you moronic devs

I never had this issue in any other game but it's genuinely an issue here. I feel like they made enemy AI unusually aggressive in groups. It's so easy to get assaulted on all ends and having to recognize multiple attacks, recognize what they are are, and then deciding and timing your parry for the one that attacks first is crazy hard and parrying is the only decent way to deal with groups since it stuns all enemies nearby. Feel like there's no super good way to deal with them other than have allies but you can't do that in normal open world activities where groups of enemies can be common and are some times forced.

They have an option for lock-on that "when locked onto an enemy, attack while inputting a direction on the leftstick to prioritize enemies in the direction input". I haven't tried it, but maybe that might be close enough to what you want?

nah it's still the shitty souls lock on, they need to go back NG soft lock

Damn I should try that. As for the camera, not really. NG doesn't have a ton of forced camera segments and i'd argue it has one of the best cameras in a normal action game (something a lot of people get filtered by) and the lack of lock-on is typically done extremely well. RotR already plays with a kind of loose camera.

Yes. They allow you to control the effects of morale to some extent in case you find the game too easy, there's 8 magic slots, up to 6 martial arts per weapon, in later new game plus cycles you can manually switch and level up martial arts in any weapon, the gear system is very simple and the basic flow of combat feels very good. It's no Nioh 2 and it's worse than Ronin but it's still a solid game.
DLC weapon types are amazing as usual too. It has the best whip in history of video games.

Honestly Wo Long was a lot better than I thought it would be than Sekiro in the end game, I was expecting parry spamming but actually needing to use MA and be offensive made the game very fast.

This HP bar is a result of a grace + DLC3 guardian spirit combo.
King Father of the East's Grace is the one that needs 2k hp, it's the ultimate quality of life grace that automatically stacks all elements onto enemies as long as you don't get hit. I got a full set after around 150 stages of the 1000 mile journey.

The best thing about the game is Wuxing. Cancelling out elements and aoe spells never gets old. DLC spells are also amazing.

                Anonymous

Yeah the King Father grace was what I was thinking, but what were the guardian spirit combos? I don't think I had enough hp because my levels weren't as high as they could have been but if I replay it I will probably check out this build more. For the most part I was using the grace that gave lifesteal (Fuxi or Nuwa I think) along with fists with only 1.4k hp or something around there.

                Anonymous

DLC3 guardian spirit's attack also gives you like 25% extra max HP for about 3 minutes
King Father's Grace also gives you extra max HP as long as you don't get hit for a few seconds
Both of those effects stack for this big dick HP bar
Nuwa is the best thing you can unlock before King Father. Don't forget to get the crown of DLC3's final boss, it's the best headpiece in the game because it has a 30% buff to the guardian spirit gauge charge.

All 3 DLC wo long weapons are insane
Fists are more simplistic than Nioh 2 version but way more aggressive and have moronic juggles and combos
Longsword has charged attacks, both light and heavy, that function somewhat like Sacred Sheath in MHR. Plus insane specials too, like a beefed up Arc of Chaos from Nioh 2.
Whip has a "frenzy" mode which is essentially a stance change with its own unique moveset, but you don't regenerate spirit while using it, in exchange for absolutely moronic aoe and damage including something i can only describe as a "judgement cut with a whip". Also has all sorts of flippy martial arts and the best block parry move in the game.

So whats the CoOp like in Ronin? Having a blast with Dogma 2 but been craving some katana-kino as Shogun continues to be excellent
Is it instanced stuff in story missions only or anything open world?
Also are bayonets FUN i've wanted an action game rifle moveset ever since Assasins Creed Unity had muskets (which ended up boring)

So there is less diablo loot bullshit in this game? Does it just truly not matter? Nioh is way worse for forcing "builds" in an action game that is about using combat options/movesets in creative ways.

sort of, it works more like a diablo world tier, you get put back into the open world where bandit camps repopulate. The big difference is story bosses show up in them and that regular enemies can swap stances mid fight. You also get access to boss rush missions.

I think part of the problem is that every enemy in this game can perform hyper armor attacks and it's kind of inconsistent on when they can hyper armor. In something like Nioh or Wo Long the rules were pretty clear. Small enemies could be hitstunned, big enemies couldn't, and it would be rare to fight multiple big enemies and those situations could usually be circumvented. In this game at any point a guy could start a 5 hit combo or do a delayed grab attack while you're trying to punish an enemy after parrying his attack, there's no forgiveness or consistent way to hit multiple enemies and not get hyperarmored through. There's no mechanic that saves you other than coutnerspark but again it can be really hard to recognize so many moves right away and parry the one that comes first and these frickers can also just attack out of view. I've definitely gotten hit by red attacks from behind way too many times.

      Anonymous

Hyperarmour isn't that hard to read, and Counterspark being able to be cancelled into at any time you want during your normal moveset means you don't have to worry about it nearly as much. Element stagger from Wo Long is a thing and Dizzy is basically Confusion which is easier to apply on multiple enemies with Affliction Wave. That cancel as well as having the grappling hook and the environment to make use of are also huge anti-group mechanics, and if an enemy is out of view that comes down to you letting them get out of view, and then you not listening to their attacks despite knowing they can do them. Fighting groups isn't easy, but it's not supposed to be, that's what makes it fun.

        Anonymous

It's not that it's hard to read, it's the fact they can do it pretty much at any point outside of parry stun so it can feel annoying since really the only good way to fight groups is simply to parry.

        >It's all the same shit that was discussed hundreds of times before: body types, the faces presets are obviously sweet-babyfied, the blade buddy has they/them pronouns in english version, you can transition your character anytime and there are tons of female cloth and cosmetics for a full speed trooning.
Thanks for the heads up, won't be getting it then

    >crazy aerial combos
    >actually enjoy its mumyo-ryu moveset
    >kiheitai-ryu in general

Is there something going on with the cat collection quest where the cats start to be more affectionate with you? all the cats in Edo have not been doing the scratch animation

It looks worse but the combat is far more enjoyable. I guess if you're a graphic homosexual prostitute wiener sucking zoomer this might be a problem

Got is like gucci, appeal to normie and win awards but gameplay wise is deep as a puddle
Ronin on other hand never appeal to normies, will never win any awards but gameplay is pure fun, challenging and rewarding
In short ronin is an actual video game while got is a oscar movie of games

They're both good. Ghost is slower paced, but looks nicer. There's a lot more downtime.
Rise is fast, and aggressive. There is some talking, but everything happens much quicker.
I like both a lot, but Rise is sucking me right in. The customization is awesome. I only wish you could have any kimono open, or draped.

Can someone explain this vengeance thing to a moron? I just died fighting some butthole and apparently I lost all my karma unless I crit the guy?
What happens if I just kill him instead? Is there a way to turn this off? It's stressing me a lot more than it should

have you played souls/soulslike games before? it's a pretty common mechanic. Granted it's weirder here because of open-world game design

but to answer you question the game says you get it back whether you crit or you kill him. You only lose it if you die before you can do either.

The enemy that killed you has all the karma points creating a vendetta and if you kill or critical them you satisfy the vendetta and get your lost karma back.

Thank you, I see I didn't read close enough. I guess I'm more used to the concept of being able to pick up souls rather than having to kill what I failed to kill, I'll just have to be a bit more aware at the possibly of death relative to current karma levels.

the flip side is that the openworld makes the whole context of the mechanic much more forgiving anyway. not to mention the perma-dying formidable enimies
