Why is this thing not fondly remembered like the DS? What went wrong? Did Vita shit the bed so hard that it completely ruined the PSP's legacy?

    >Why is this thing not fondly remembered like the DS?
Nintendo already had it foot in the portable console market
    >Did Vita shit the bed so hard that it completely ruined the PSP's legacy?
    YES
    >What went wrong?
Lack of a second analog stick and UMD not being powerful or something. For me, the PSP was badass. I’m sad there will never be a proper psp 2.

I'll always remember the PSP screen resolution, 480x272, because of how many fricking tv shows, movies, and anime i converted to enjoy later, and all the hours i spent emulating games.
I'll always cherish it because for the longest time i wanted to have a multimedia portable player, something like a high end phone from around the time, but i couldn't afford one, but the PSP allowed me to have just that at an affordable price plus physical controls. I also loved my vita however phones got so much cheaper and they filled the entertainment i needed when i was away from my home so i didn't use it a lot.

The PSP had a dedicated H264 decompression chip, so your custom made videos on a jailbroken PSP could have INSANE bitrate as long as they were 480x272.

I dunno why Sony hobbled the PSP's video resolution by default. Maybe they had some deal with movie companies to ensure that only UMD movies could have that quality?

I'm not all too familiar with the library of PSP, but could it be the case that the DS just has a more varied and more recognizable library?
    >Mario Kart DS
    >Pokemon
    >Nintendogs
    >Rub Rabbits
    >Rhythm Paradise

The novelty of the dual screen, and resistive touch screen seems to have made the DS just much more memorable. Whereas, for the PSP, you might as well have played it on your PS1/2.

It is fondly remembered. It just so happened that the DS caught a wider audience due to its accessibility pre-smartphone. It didn't help that Sony failed to give the Vita support after year one, but smartphone prominence (2012 saw record sales with the iPhone 5 and whichever generation of Galaxy S) was the long term fall of pocket gaming. Even the 3DS, albeit successful enough, had its sales cut in half since the DS because of the smartphone. Part of the reason the Switch is the way it is, stems from not competing for pocket real estate.

MonHun with my brothers was always fun and I got to play PS1 games on it because of my brother hacking that thing

You forgot games, OP. This piece of shit had no games while the ds had more high quality games than almost any console.

It sold frick all for software and was a piracy wonderland, creating a domino effect of third parties having no confidence in the Vita (worsened by Sony uncharacteristically doing absolutely nothing on their end to try courting third party devs to the Vita). Leading to the utter wasteland that was Vita support.

    >Why is this thing not fondly remembered like the DS?
Maybe because it had no games? Recall that it's code name before it came out was NGP (No Games, only Ports).

    >Why is this thing not fondly remembered like the DS?
It mostly is, but it simply didn't have the cultural influence and banging library the DS packed. Remember, Pokémon, Kirby, DK, and many acclaimed IPs were on DS.
In the Japanese market atleast, PSP only got a foothold thanks to Monster Hunter.

    > What went wrong?
The analog nub is by far the worst ever made and UMD is a failed format. They should've went with cart and a small rubber inwards nub. These are not huge issues but it affected the overall quality.

    > Did Vita shit the bed so hard that it completely ruined the PSP's legacy?
Yes. It completely ruined the brand and kicked SONY straight out of portables.
The fact it looks exactly like the PSP also means that it stained its memory.

The sad part is its actually a pretty capable machine, just mired with disgusting business decisions.

Sony probably won't enter portables anymore, all manufacturers are slowly moving to GaaS and accepting PC as a unifying platform. Why make an entire new console like and sell at a loss when people can just get a Steam Deck now and play their titles?

The PSP had a digital store. They could have just ditched physical games altogether and gone all digital, but I guess the market wasn't ready for that yet.

The market isn't even fully ready to ditch physical in 2021, what in the world would make you think the world was ready for it in 2004 where 100Mbit internet was a rich people luxury?

I used to watch so much porn on my psp and listen to so many stolen mp3s and watch so many pirated movies on my PS3. I miss when consoles had built in features like that

The PSP did the Nintendo thing where it saw a market need and nailed it. A pocket Multimedia device with physical controls plus solid exclusive games was absolutely ahead of it's time in 2005. Now that market is just your phone. For $5 a smartphone can play XCOM better than the Vita ever could. Now the Vita is mostly good for playing old PSP games. Like local Dissidia. If you have a friend local who plays and still has theirs, call them a b***h and tell them to catch hands.
