I did and he never messed up my cartridge
The only long term effect was my hall of fame records being screwed up but that gets fixed by starting a new game
    Missingno has terrible stats though

I did and he messed up the graphics, everything was glitchy. It's fixed if you release it though.

Hall of fame is even messed up if you don't catch it. MissingNo can't ruin the cartridge, only the save file.

The absurd steps of the missingno glitch is why I was willing to believe every pokemon rumor until I tried them myself as a kid
    Pokegods, Bill's Garden, Yoshi
It all seemed plausible until I tried them myself
At least the Mew glitch turned out to be real

      that's cool anon what happened?
i must've replayed Pokemon red and blue a million times and always did the missingo glitch to dupe items, I caught missingo a bunch of times too and used it in battle and messed up my game but I don't ever recall seeing mew in the hall of fame
I think there was another glitch monster too called m? or something

'M. the only pokemon that is 100% garanteed to be on the encounter pool for the old man glitch regardless of your name.

It was a thing only 1% of the people knew back then. By the time MissingNo. was first exposed on internet, many kids were already not playing RBY anymore.

Hot. But no I remember long before Gold and Silver released MissingNo being common knowledge even without internet. It spread via actual word of mouth.

Thing about missingno is you can happen upon it completely accidentally. Everyone talked to that old man so it's just a question of happening to get an encounter when you pass that coastline.

        Anonymous

The crux of the glitch happening is that the east coastline of Cinnabar Island is set as allowing encounters, but doesn't update the encounter table.

Under most circumstances, surfing on the east coast will just re-encounter Pokémon from the most recently visited area, which is most likely going to be the water route you were just on, or maybe the wild Pokémon inside of the abandoned mansion.

Talking to the old man in Viridian city temporarily overwrites the encounter table with the player's name. Flying to Cinnabar Island doesn't update the encounter table, so the east coast allows players to encounter Pokémon based on their trainer name.
        https://web.archive.org/web/20071226115844/http://glitchcity.info/misc/namegen2
This can be used to obtain Pokémon that can normally only be encountered once, such as Mewtwo, Aerodactyl, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and Snorlax.

Huh I could have sworn the glitch would happened as long as you had talked to the old man at some point in the game and not necessarily right beforehand. Guessing I must have gotten that detail wrong.

You can do this for Safari mons, right? Or does Fuchsia overwrite those encounters?

            Anonymous

It works on Safari mons. I'm pretty sure that's the main reason people know about the glitch in the first place since even Nintendo refers to it as the "Fight Safari Zone Pokémon trick".

I reckon it's why the originals games lend themselves so well to creepastas well. Sure Lavender Town is a thing but the games having that layer of creepiness that has some legitimacy with missingno helped immensely.

I never found Missingno creepy. It helps that I always was a computer kid so a screwed up palette or garbage data appeared to me exactly as it is.

The Old Man glitch (and a bunch of other glitches for that matter) was caused by shoddy localization programming. Japanese RGB have their own problems, but MissingNo. isn't one of them. Most Japanese fans probably aren't even aware MissingNo. exists.

          >probably the most infamous glitch of all time
          >potentially unheard of in japan
          That's crazy to think about.

they probably do, just with one of those different methods like the ditto variant of the trainer fly glitch so it's not as popular. it apparently does exist in japanese copies.

I'd love to hear the meetings at Gamefreak when they designed the game
        >"Okay here's the first boss. His pokemon resist normal and poison moves. Also the only Pokemon you can catch before him only learn normal or poison moves except for the butterfly at level 12."
