i've been playing this game for like 20 years on and off. i've never bothered beating the second campaign but the first one is amazing and is the only RTS eith a legitimately good story. all i ever do is play the first campaign over and over and try to beat levels in moronic ways, or play custom games against AI. my online record is like 20-156. basically i'm highly moronic and have neglected to play half of the actual game across two decades and i'll still tell you it's by far the best RTS ever made outside of maybe WC3 + world editor.

The AI pathfinding is wonky as shit. Make sure you right click multiple times on your groups if they are straying apart to correct their path. For Terrans you can put vultures in front of marines as a cheap buffer. Make sure you upgrade weap/armor on missions that are applicable.

    > Dune 2 and C&C
aha funnily enough I think sc is actually closer to dune 2... you're making bases and gathering resources and expanding territory. the campaigns and story is fun. I don't think its super challenging, but its fun to build up a small army or run the infiltration missions they give you with a handful of random units. Online 1v1 is micro intensive, but other than that you just out macro and counter enemies. If they build ground you build tanks, if they build tanks you build air, if they build air you build anti air, ext. Good games. The patches are mostly balances for online play so I doubt you need any but I don't think they hurt anything.

      >aha funnily enough I think sc is actually closer to dune 2... you're making bases
You almost never make bases in Dune II. Normally you expand within your "island" of buildable rocky terrain and you win before you run out of space. Only in the latest campaign missions it starts being worth making new bases. And even then capturing enemy structures and building around them is cheaper, safer and quicker.

Not to mention that you only get MCV at around mission 5 or 6.

Build more than one of unit production. 3-4 barracks, gateways, or the like. When you hit the ALIEEEEENS, You're gonna one more than one big pile of snot and bones. It makes your units, so you need at LEAST 3-4. Micro is king. Cannon Crabs are the main infantry unit of the ENTARO ADUN, but they have REALLY terrible pathing. They're best paired with I LONG FOR COMBAT, When you get down to basics, you're gonna find the AI is kinda shiiiieit and the overall execution of the game is aged rather poorly.

But if you really wanna be a troony idiot, you can get starcraft 2, or reinstall it if you happen to own it already, and download this.
    https://www.sc2mapster.com/projects/starcraft-mass-recall
What this does is it gives you a custom campaign with the cutscenes, voice acting, intro, and everything SC1 offers except with the graphics and quality of life changes of 2, as well as the AI of it so the computer is that much harder to fight. You even get difficulty selection so if you've played the game again and again or you're just a hard-core gamer, you can submit yourself to the masochistic whims of the bastards that thought it'd be funny to throw an ultralisk at you in the first fricking mission for terrans when all you have are marines and Jim Raynor's didlo bicycle.

That's a fair point and entirely understandable. It's just an option I figured to toss out if anyone here had actually bought SC2 before B/A went full B/O and ate a bag of dicks.

Not that anon, but I stopped playing SC2 ages ago but followed the competitive scene for a good while until about 6 years ago since it got pretty stale and every game was the same shit. Decided on a whim the other day to check back on it, and though apparently people still complain about it, it honestly looks a lot more varied than when I left, and the top players are godlike in their execution, so I've been having a blast catching up on the highlights.

OP here, I'm currently at mission 5: Revolution and I struggle a bit trying to remember what building does what. All these researches and upgrades are a bit overwhelming compared to way more straightforward C&C games. Loving the game so far. Some anon here spoke about the graphics and I think they're great, especially for a 8 bit color palette. I only wish units rotations were smoother. By the way, is it possible to heal Kerrigan?

      Anonymous

I'm currently replaying the campaigns after 20+ years and having the time of my life. The story is engaging and the gameplay is perfect. Loving it. Plus I was very inefficient as a kid, had no strategy and savescummed a lot. Now I feel like I'm playing the game the proper way.

All the upgrades are a bit overwhelming at first but you get used to them. Every unit is upgradeable so you can fine-tune your army to your liking.

And no, Terrans can't heal biological units in the base game. only with medics in the expansion.

Terrans got a medic unit in the Broodwar Expansion, but I can't recall off hand if you're ever allowed to build it in the base game.

i'd be interested to see how you do on the mission where you have to survive for 30min. that gets a lot of people early on. im by no means a good player but i still remember when that mission was panic-inducing and now i beat it by not only defending my base but wiping out every last zerg before the timer ends. it takes a long time to develop a good "battle sense", learning the shortcuts by heart and figuring out the right build order for each scenario, eapecially if you go in blind.

        Anonymous

I am at Norad II currently. Spamming Goliaths. Those Zerg tentacle defences are no joke so I bring a couple of SCVs with me for field repairs. Is it possible to make them repair nearby units automatically once they're damaged?

          Anonymous

          >Is it possible to make them repair nearby units automatically once they're damaged?
Nope. They didn't introduce that until SC2.

          Anonymous

No. What you should do is hotkey the SCV that IS at norad on your 9-0 key and use that whenever that structure takes damage.

Now, I don't exactly remember, but I THINK it's easier to use some wraiths to distract from the spore colonies and to drop off ground defenses to start plucking away at the ring of defenses that are there and from that point, you can drop a couple of Rax's there. You can also use an engineering bay to float up and distract the air defenses while you start peeling the layers back. This is if you're having issues getting further since when you get your ground units upgraded the Engineering bay is now kinda extraneous. It's actually easier with this tactic to work your way to Duke because once that ring of air defense and ground defense is gone, you can ignore the majority of the ground forces as long as you're using spider mines. Do note this is a blitz tactic so if you take too long, you're screwed.

          Anonymous

Goliaths are more effective as mobile anti-air, their ground attack sucks. You're better off going full firebat/marine spam until siege tanks become available

Goliaths are good once you get 3+3 upgrades, very beefy front line unit that protects your seige tanks. There is a reason why they make up main army composition vs. protoss competitively

              Anonymous

The frick you talking about Fenix? In TVP you build vultures, tanks, and science vessels. Goliaths only come in to play if you scout them transitioning to mass carrier.

            >their ground attack sucks
Absolutely false. They do 2x damage than a marine, and hitscan just like a marine. Goliaths outclass the Dragoon in every way, and match up favorably to Hydras. Terran mech overall is simply overpowered and the best overall units in the game

There's also 1.17, but it was never officially released before 1.18(remaster). It fixes the color issue caused by the old DirectDraw dependancy, adds an APM counter, and that's about it. If you want to play Brood War and don't want to play online or any of the new maps or have 5GBs of space taken by the game, 1.17 is the last patch for the old retail release.

Did anyone play it multiplayer before Broodwar existed? If so, what was the meta like before Medic, Lurkers, Dark Templar, etc? Just every game ending with an early zergling rush?

My memory is pretty fuzzy but I do remember rushes from Zealots and Zerglings being very effective. And the stats were different in the first version, things like Spawning Pools being only 150 minerals just like the Barracks/Gateway. Photon Cannons also did explosive damage if I recall correctly as well, which made them pretty shit against Zerglings.

This thread made me wonder: which are old RTS games that are still fun to play in single player mode?

I'm talking exactly about RTS, not tactical strategies (like Myth or Close Combat). Also stuff like Settlers (and its clones) is excluded too.

First thing that comes to my mind is Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, it's a pretty peculiar thing per se (albeit it's very irritating occasionally).

Dune 2000. While technically probably not legal you can get the GruntMods Edition here which has a number of enhancements: https://gruntmods.com/dune_2000_gruntmods_edition/

Warcraft 2 still holds up quite well IMO.

The Command & Conquer remasters are really well done and the games in there hold up really well still.

Tiberian Sun as another anon mentioned, and has also been officially freeware for quite some time now.

Dark Reign, another classic sci-fi RTS released around the time of TA. You can get that here: https://www.darkreignws.com

Starcraft is brilliant, especially the campaign. The characters are great, the story is engaging, there are lots of great quotes to remember. I love the art style much more than the slimy hodgepodge of SC2, or WC3's cartoonish stuff.

Weird, I haven't played SC until 2019, when I was 38, and honestly it still had some nostalgia vibes with it. Probably because I played lots of Red Alert 1-2 and Warcraft 2 as a kid, and this game is really a reskinned WC2 with Red Alert/Tiberian Sun style.

The first episode is interesting story-wise, but it's also a trainer episode considering the relative difficulty to other episodes. You will be massively surprised when you play the highly memorable last level ("The Hammer Falls"), because it's your first true challenge in this game.

Episode 2-5 are in the same bracket in terms of difficulty, but episode 6 is again a huge leap forward, especially in late levels like "To Slay the Beast" and "Omega". At least the story is great, you won't play these for nothing.

OP here again. Considering I'm playing at my own leisure and not trying to speedrun the thing, is using hordes of level 3 upgraded (armor and weapon) marines and a science vessel to reveal cloaked units a viable strategy?

      Anonymous

Also, ghosts are so cool. What are some nice strategies with them?

      Anonymous

Ghosts are not good as attacking units. They are a utility/spellcaster. Their great for say locking down a siege tank or carrier but outside of that their damage output is way too low. Tactical nuke is always an option for endgame, but it's just way too slow, I would opt for battle cruisers instead.

For marines you'd have to have a steady macro of units rallying out of barracks if you are playing classic, maybe get up to 7 or 8 barracks pumping them out. If you are on expansion you want about 1 medic for every 3 marines. Don't underestimate firebats on single player, they absolutely melt zerglings and are pretty decent against zealots. But typically against protoss you want to stick with mech.

3/3 upgraded mech is just the ultimate army in the game. Vultures are just so good and only cost 75 min, siege tanks are the best unit in the game, and goliaths are very beefy.

You can also go mass wraith in single player and stack the wraiths on top of each other so they take less damage by putting 1 SCV in your wraith control group and spamming right click in a triangle until they all converge into one unit. Box in the scv with supply depot's or something so it doesn't escape your base. This stacking trick is famously done with mutalisks but it works the same with any flying unit. See this video

Mass battle cruisers is the ultimate endgame composition but obviously it's kinda expensive. Good luck and have fun

      Anonymous

For the campaign, I wanted to see how far I could go with firebat/marine spam and up to the 7th mission I was good. It's a high attrition strategy however, you lose lots of units but deal a lot of damage as well. You need multiple waves to clear the map.

By the 8th mission however, my guys could barely scratch the enemy outpost outside my base. Maybe I could do it with even more units but it was clearly an ineffective strategy so I switched to siege tanks.

Anyone here beat the Enslavers campaign? It's a set of maps with a branching path found in the scenario menu. Back in the day I could never beat the final map, the one with the respawning Ultralisk. My brother was able to do it by using Dark Archons to capture and having his own Ultralisk army, but I always thought that was cheating, as the campaign was made before BW was released.

I'm slowly playing through SC again and I eventually want to give that campaign another shot.
