really enjoyed the monster taming but it kind of sucks that the named story characters are better so I barely use my dragon or golem or apple because I have a family to fill my party.

Absolutely fricking terrible, don't bother.
It's only enjoyable to some extent if you've played the game and know the context for all the scenes, but it still feels very lackluster, as it skips over every major plot point and adds dumb retcons just to achieve some semblence of a coherent story. That, and there's plenty of cringy Japanese humor that was not in the game.
