With Cinnamon it's pretty comparable, I messed with it a bit a few years ago. Some stuff was a little buggy out of the box which was offputting but I'm hoping it's ironed out now.
Used it on multiple laptops, and PCs for multiple people. Even my grandma.
No ussues so far, they've been running fine for 2 years now.
Make sure automatic updates are enabled.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, ENABLE SNAPSHOTS THIS WAY YOU CAN ROLL BACK TO A WORKING SYSTEM IF YOU FRICK SHIT UP
Not coming off Win7, but I figured this year I'd bite the bullet and move from Win10 to Arch. It may be a bit of a leap since I don't have that much experience with general Linux usage (though I've used the terminal plenty in a ubuntu server environment), but I relish the challenge. As far as I can tell, all the games I'm interested in run perfectly well on Linux as it is. The only real question mark is my (frankly outdated) Huion Kamvas GT-191 art monitor. Its driver support is a little shaky even on Win10, and looks even shakier on Linux.
It's more of a money issue.
Or when I did have the money to build a new PC, graphics cards were outrageous because of everyone trying to farm bitcoins.
PC from 2011 with 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and 64 GB SSD can run Win10 just fine.
In 2021 I gave my mom an ancient rig I had laying around so she could browse the net, pay the bills, print stuff etc. It's a Phenom II X4 955 with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a Radeon HD 5850. I only replaced the dying HDD with some cheap SSD. Win 10 runs on it without any hitches, I even used it myself for like a month when my own PC died and I was waiting for parts.
If a PC can run 7 it can also run 10.
You can use a modded debloated image and it'll run on an HDD

I don't get this either, even on my toaster the Win10 ltsc ran just fine. If you can't run W10 properly on your machine, then you have bigger issues than playing your f2p shit on 12 fps.

I moved to Manjaro after that for both its repo and the AUR. Planning to move to Arch in the end but not quite there yet.

I think this mentality is a major impediment to Linux adoption. It makes people feel like they're not really using Linux until they're using Arch or Gentoo or some other "hardcore" distro. To me that's the equivalent of somebody feeling like they're not really using Windows until they're using Windows Server Edition. Home users should really just use a Debian-lineage distro like Ubuntu or Mint and then stay there. It would also make it easier for developers to target Linux.

I don't think so and I use gentoo. A lot of new users who advocate (gnu)linux don't get that distros exist for different use cases. Telling someone to use a stable distro that isn't ubuntu is simply bad because they're getting the downsides of stable without the benefits of being on the primary target distro and benefitting from the ppa ecosystem. Nobara is an exception since GE has bolted a lot of hacks onto fedora, but I don't think it's sustainable in the long run since fedora is RH's dumping ground for bad ideas. For gamers who are new to linux I think arch is unironically the best distro because of the number of bespoke tools we use and being able to easily use bleeding edge software versions through the core repository and AUR. At the very least being on mesa-git and linux-next is going to make a big difference vs ubuntu for newer gpus/cpus. >It would also make it easier for developers to target Linux.
If you mean for games, win32 is unironically the most stable crossplatform api there is and ever will be so targeting linux through wine/proton is easy as hell now.
Assuming you're new? Fedora, specifically the KDE spin. It's well maintained and has a robust community, and KDE means that your UI is practically identical to 7. Fedora is updated every six months but it's not bleeding edge so you don't have to worry about your computer getting fricked by an update unlike arch where if you can't figure it out you're fricked.

If you don't know, just do what every other beginner does.
1. Install Ubuntu because it's the distro that literally everything supports.
2. Realize GNOME is shit and either switch out the desktop environment or go to a distro that has a good DE out of the box (e.g. Mint).
You can disregard people telling you to install Arch, Gentoo, or Debian as your first distro. If you just look at the ones recommended to beginners by people without brain disorders, there really aren't that many choices, and it really is just a case of "holy shit stop whining and just PICK ONE and if you don't like it then pick again". It's free and you're not marrying it.
Get your bearings with Mint then do some rolling release like Arch or something. You'll come to a point where Mint/Ubuntu/Debian are so outdated that it negatively impacts your experience/performance.
Use a VM or livecd to try out every distro that appeals to you. Shortlist for newbies nobara, arch, lubuntu/kubuntu. Avoid mint (outdated packages based on ubuntu lts/debian) and manjaro ("stable" arch which means shit breaks all the time because they define stable as old like debian).

If it's that big of a problem for some reason then switching to a different OS shouldn't be that much of a cost compared to steam not working. I doubt you will be able to install new games once the update that breaks it for win7 comes out since you almost certainly have to have the most modern version installed to do downloads.
When Valve says they've stopped supporting 7 it just means they will stop considering 7 when they update stuff. You can theoretically keep using an old Steam build forever, but you never know when something on the backend will change that causes it to no longer work, and Valve won't alert you if it happens or is going to happen either. Same thing happened with XP IIRC.
You can connect to them, download the games, and so on, but you will never receive any security updates from Valve if you are on Windows 7. Valve will not be responsible for what happens to you - such as getting hacked or infected with a virus.
The chance of it happening would be slim unless you are one of those morons who happily clicks on any links, which could be malware. You will not be hacked by Steam, but third parties might pose a threat.

Reinstalling or upgrading the operating system is such a massive hassle to me that Steam is probably going to need to become completely nonfunctional on Windows 7 in order to get me to do it.

10 is the best version of Windows I've ever used just barely edging out XP. 7, 8 and 11 are all worthless pieces of shit for differing reasons. 7 is ugly and clunky compared to 10, 8 is literally a tablet OS and 11 runs like absolute ass demanding way, way more RAM than it should actually need while taking up too much storage space.
Once support for 10 finally ends and 11 (or whatever is newer) starts getting pushed hard then I will switch to Mint and use Wine when I need it. If you hate 10 then I see no reason to not do that instead of clinging onto something that is obviously going by the wayside due to both M$ and israelitegle.

I didn't really use vista, so I can't actively claim it WASN'T hot shit, but it lacked some notable things 7 had (garbage collection stuff for ssds specifically, iirc). The main reason that people shat on vista was that the system spec requirement was distinctly higher than what the majority of prebuilt computers/laptops at the time had. you had shit like a single core 1GHz celeron with 128/256MB of ram trying to run it, which just isn't going to work well in any sense.

I still have my xp machine with an intel quad core. I had to replace the 8800gt I originally had in it but all the other parts still work, except for something that unfortunately is preventing it from booting. does anyone know what might be fricked? it was working when I was still using it frequently but when I plugged it later on it wouldn't start. if I turn the power supply on and let it sit for like an hour it will start to boot but then shut down before it can finish.
It could be a dead CMOS battery on the motherboard. Once it dies, your mobo bios loses its ability to keep settings and time, and the latter alone will cause all kinds of weird issues on machines. Cheap and easily replaced, just grab a CR2032 next time you visit your local shops. That's about all I can point to going off your description.
Replace the CMOS battery like the other anon said, just because it's cheap, but if that doesn't work I'd look at the PSU. A few years ago I bought a cheap 300W PSU just to keep on hand as a known good spare for testing in other machines.
If you have a PSU from some other machine that works, you could swap it into your XP one and see if it boots.

Not coming off Win7, but I figured this year I'd bite the bullet and move from Win10 to Arch. It may be a bit of a leap since I don't have that much experience with general Linux usage (though I've used the terminal plenty in a ubuntu server environment), but I relish the challenge. As far as I can tell, all the games I'm interested in run perfectly well on Linux as it is. The only real question mark is my (frankly outdated) Huion Kamvas GT-191 art monitor. Its driver support is a little shaky even on Win10, and looks even shakier on Linux.

In 2021 I gave my mom an ancient rig I had laying around so she could browse the net, pay the bills, print stuff etc. It's a Phenom II X4 955 with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a Radeon HD 5850. I only replaced the dying HDD with some cheap SSD. Win 10 runs on it without any hitches, I even used it myself for like a month when my own PC died and I was waiting for parts.
If a PC can run 7 it can also run 10.

I think this mentality is a major impediment to Linux adoption. It makes people feel like they're not really using Linux until they're using Arch or Gentoo or some other "hardcore" distro. To me that's the equivalent of somebody feeling like they're not really using Windows until they're using Windows Server Edition. Home users should really just use a Debian-lineage distro like Ubuntu or Mint and then stay there. It would also make it easier for developers to target Linux.

I don't think so and I use gentoo. A lot of new users who advocate (gnu)linux don't get that distros exist for different use cases. Telling someone to use a stable distro that isn't ubuntu is simply bad because they're getting the downsides of stable without the benefits of being on the primary target distro and benefitting from the ppa ecosystem. Nobara is an exception since GE has bolted a lot of hacks onto fedora, but I don't think it's sustainable in the long run since fedora is RH's dumping ground for bad ideas. For gamers who are new to linux I think arch is unironically the best distro because of the number of bespoke tools we use and being able to easily use bleeding edge software versions through the core repository and AUR. At the very least being on mesa-git and linux-next is going to make a big difference vs ubuntu for newer gpus/cpus.

If you mean for games, win32 is unironically the most stable crossplatform api there is and ever will be so targeting linux through wine/proton is easy as hell now.
Assuming you're new? Fedora, specifically the KDE spin. It's well maintained and has a robust community, and KDE means that your UI is practically identical to 7. Fedora is updated every six months but it's not bleeding edge so you don't have to worry about your computer getting fricked by an update unlike arch where if you can't figure it out you're fricked.
Nobara or anything with KDE once Plasma 6 comes out.

1. Install Ubuntu because it's the distro that literally everything supports.
2. Realize GNOME is shit and either switch out the desktop environment or go to a distro that has a good DE out of the box (e.g. Mint).
You can disregard people telling you to install Arch, Gentoo, or Debian as your first distro. If you just look at the ones recommended to beginners by people without brain disorders, there really aren't that many choices, and it really is just a case of "holy shit stop whining and just PICK ONE and if you don't like it then pick again". It's free and you're not marrying it.

Use a VM or livecd to try out every distro that appeals to you. Shortlist for newbies nobara, arch, lubuntu/kubuntu. Avoid mint (outdated packages based on ubuntu lts/debian) and manjaro ("stable" arch which means shit breaks all the time because they define stable as old like debian).
There's one version of linux, two or three versions of the coreutils a handful of package managers and everything else is meaningless.
I turned off the bootstrapper so it won't update. Havent been using steam much, but that'll keep shit operable until I finally get around to a linux migration.

The thing that will break and deprecate win7 is the chromium stuff that makes the page function, not whatever Steam uses to connect to your computer.
So it's not a non issue? Just use your browser or phone to use the store or community pages.
I doubt you will be able to install new games once the update that breaks it for win7 comes out since you almost certainly have to have the most modern version installed to do downloads.
When Valve says they've stopped supporting 7 it just means they will stop considering 7 when they update stuff. You can theoretically keep using an old Steam build forever, but you never know when something on the backend will change that causes it to no longer work, and Valve won't alert you if it happens or is going to happen either. Same thing happened with XP IIRC.
You can connect to them, download the games, and so on, but you will never receive any security updates from Valve if you are on Windows 7. Valve will not be responsible for what happens to you - such as getting hacked or infected with a virus.

10 is the best version of Windows I've ever used just barely edging out XP. 7, 8 and 11 are all worthless pieces of shit for differing reasons. 7 is ugly and clunky compared to 10, 8 is literally a tablet OS and 11 runs like absolute ass demanding way, way more RAM than it should actually need while taking up too much storage space.
Once support for 10 finally ends and 11 (or whatever is newer) starts getting pushed hard then I will switch to Mint and use Wine when I need it. I still have my xp machine with an intel quad core. I had to replace the 8800gt I originally had in it but all the other parts still work, except for something that unfortunately is preventing it from booting. does anyone know what might be fricked? it was working when I was still using it frequently but when I plugged it later on it wouldn't start. if I turn the power supply on and let it sit for like an hour it will start to boot but then shut down before it can finish.
It could be a dead CMOS battery on the motherboard. Once it dies, your mobo bios loses its ability to keep settings and time, and the latter alone will cause all kinds of weird issues on machines. Cheap and easily replaced, just grab a CR2032 next time you visit your local shops. That's about all I can point to going off your description.
Replace the CMOS battery like the other anon said, just because it's cheap, but if that doesn't work I'd look at the PSU. A few years ago I bought a cheap 300W PSU just to keep on hand as a known good spare for testing in other machines.
If you have a PSU from some other machine that works, you could swap it into your XP one and see if it boots.
