women are not real, so we need to remove the word woman from the english language

The first one makes him competent. Like, "its obvious we cant miss it". And serious bussiness.
The second one is a bloodlusted memelord phrase about having fun killing.

Now that you got your answer. Whats your opinion?

That's not the reason, the reason is that the first one implies women are rare in the battlefield, so you can't really miss her.

You’re skipping steps. The general script was made in Japanese
            Performance done in English.
The Japanese was tweaked to match the lip sync flow of English.

You say "only recorded" like the people in charge of this just walked away and some evil western translators with an agenda were left to run amok and tarnish your glorious nippon moonrunes. Scripts aren't worth dick, execution is more important, and when it came down to the actual important part of the production, the producers and directors made sure English was prioritized

              >the people in charge of this just walked away
That's one way to word it. Japanese are courteous above all and have a strong declination against arguing for sensitive issues like this. When the US counterpart argues for keeping the changes they've made unless you'd want to risk causing offence, the Jap creative introvert bows his head and accepts the foul fate of the fruits from his toil.
These changes are made to indulge the Twitter mob, the home of the clout chasing hero of justice. From a capitalistic perspective, when was the last time risque game dialogue was subject for controversy in the West? It has never happened. Would that kind of language risk a higher age rating? Nope. Would it be too much for an American teen to spot the misogyny and keep it in mind when digesting the game? No, but according to localizers, they need to shield innocent youths from such outdated and dangerous concepts. They chastise creators as providers of indoctrinational devices in the guise of video games.
In reality, they are removing the relatively safe environment to encounter and ponder concepts such as misogyny and sexism, instead setting youths up for an eventual meeting with the real deal less prepared. Everyone will eventually encounter real hate. If they hadn't had the opportunity to face such things in a friendlier milieu they will be more susceptible to its damaging influence.
Misogyny and sexism are parts of reality. Censoring and only providing squeaky-clean worlds makes for both bland and harmful escapism.
Localizers are ironically doing the opposite of what they claim to fight for while shooting from the hip and looking for brownie points.

I assumed there was a missing line in the middle where he was asked how they'd be able to tell but you're right let me tighten that up.

She won't exactly be hard to spot.

It's more subtle, just the word "she" is doing all the heavy lifting here. But I assume the world building is that a woman is so rare the chances of a mistake are very low.

          A more direct version:
She's a woman, that should narrow it down.

I know it's not perfect but I'm okay with that level of editorializing if it sounds better. The intent is the same. I'm not anti-localization for the sake of natural dialogue I'm against it changing too much. But I'm having fun here's an edit:

Our target is the Dominant and only the Dominant. Remember it.

Our only target this mission is the Dominant, no one else. Understand?

It's difficult to get a natural direct translation so I tried some stuff out.

I took a stab at the second line here:

I assumed there was a missing line in the middle where he was asked how they'd be able to tell but you're right let me tighten that up.

She won't exactly be hard to spot.

It's more subtle, just the word "she" is doing all the heavy lifting here. But I assume the world building is that a woman is so rare the chances of a mistake are very low.

          A more direct version:
She's a woman, that should narrow it down.

か signals the end of a question. There might not even be a question mark after it, it's still almost certainly the end of the sentence, and still a question.
A translation that is closer to the original sentence structure would be something like "She's a woman, right? Won't be any mistaking her on a battlefield.", so the translation the image creator used is perfectly acceptable.

they actually altered the Japanese script to better match the English mouthflaps, and the scripts were basically written/translated simultaneously to the point where both Maehiro and Koji can't remember which bits were in which language first. This wasn't "Maehiro writes the script then hands it off to a localizer in America," this was collaborative writing with Koji-Fox directly part of the writing team.

Imagine thinking Maehiro gives a shit about what Koji says or even understanding any english at all lol.
The original script is japanese, and you can see the script is different even in moments where it didn't need to for the lip sync, which is terrible in general by the way.
Maehiro at best did some rewording where necessary to better fit the lip sync in some capacity when he got the final scenes at that's it.
You can bet the final japanese script is way closer in general to the original one than the english localization by Koji the hack.

Honestly I was mild to okay on this game but seeing all the XIV cultists trying to push this game as a "new era of FF" I feel the need to push back.

This is not a Final Fantasy game.

The world is bland. There are no party members, there's no magic, no iconic aesthetics or locations (even XIII had these), there are NO RPG MECHANICS - no strengths or weaknesses, elemental/physical/magic immunity, combos do literally nothing, Torgal does nothing but increase the DMC cuhrayzee combo points you get at the end of each fight, enemies are Musou tier and just exist to be thrown around and do easily dodgeable telegraphed attacks. The main character is ultra bland, we are supposed to feel emotional about him losing his brother Joshua but we barely see them interact more than twice and they do so in a fairly neutered and unemotional way. Items are also an afterthought - you can collect only a limited number of potions, and STR/DEF/Devil trigger potiond, and thats it. Every other item gives slight boosts to all the same-y Eikon abilities. The boss fights are boring, filled with easily telegraphed attacks and characters swearing constantly like some cringy Netflix series. Its an okay gamw but lets not pretend this unambitious DMC clone is anything like a Final Fantasy. If this game becomes the model for future non Remake FF games going forward, then I'm done with Square as a company, and judging by the fast disparity between interest in FF7 Remake and FF16, many others will be too.

      女だろ? = It's a woman?
戦場で間違えるか = mistakes are made on the battlefield

yes, the right changes the meaning, though probably preserves the attitude of the speaker, talking shit about the orders

the left looks to have been intentionally mistranslated in OP's image to try to make it look like the original text is a gendered insult and the right is a virtue signal trying to remove that, ie there won't be a problem getting the target if the target is a (inferred to be uncommon) woman on a battlefield

          honhonhon you got me
anyway the point i was trying to make was that the original japanese text was basically implying that the guy wouldn't mistake her for anyone else because she's a woman and there are usually no women on battlefields, and that's a no no in the west because that's sexist, so it was changed in the US version to something neutral.

OP wants to make you think that the translation on the right is woke, and is protecting the virtue of women and pushing a narrative that women are just as strong and battleworthy as men by pretending that it is removing an inference that women are uncommon/incompetent to be on a battlefield, but OP's translation is wrong, presumably intentionally so in order to push their own agenda, whatever that may be (sucking off Andrew Tate, trolling or just a general console warrior or XVI hating sperg)

He has been saying that for FFXIV since 1.0 and yet they still had massive rewrites in the EN translation because he didn't know the sex of the main antagonist and ended up just inventing shit that doesn't exist in the original version with Nael. If he was THAT involved in the writing he would've known something as basic as that. Same with Hauchefant, his first JP cutscenes are so drastically different than their EN translation that they had to create two separate cutscenes depending on your translation because of it, something that wouldn't happen if he had impact in the whole writing and not only the EN. He probably gives his opinions but the japanese staff is just "Whatever".

I can't really agree with this author that both are "literal" translations, since only one is actually translating, the other is already trying to localize. Turning "silver world" into winter wonderland, already takes away meaning. Its not hard to understand that "beautifull silver world" would mean the sparkly snowy enviroment. And it also shows that the person saying that went for an extraordinary descriptor. So yea imo, the better translation will leave it like that. That way whoever reads it, will get insight in also the japanese culture and their idioms.

You can still take the meaning of what is being said in the Japanese text and form the English text with as close an approximation as possible of the meanings presented in the Japanese. When Google Translate is more accurate than the official localization, there's a problem

I know it sounds like a meme, but I'm actually a professional Japanese translator. Here roughly how I would do it:

    >Our only mission is to kill the Dominant. Don't lose sight of her.
    >How could we miss her? It's a wench on the battlefield for God's sake- she sticks out like a sore thumb.

So the nuance is that in this world, women do not belong on the battlefield, so the 2nd guy is taking the mission lightly.

But the English version seems to be a fanfiction where a woman on the battlefield is not notable at all, and the 2nd guy's personality has changed as well. Does not bode well for the rest of the script.

God doesn't exist in a fantasy setting, why the frick are you using christian expressions?

Besides that, I like your first sentence, the second one would need some fixing not just because of the expression, but because of the length. Remember lip-synching. You can't spew as many words as you want, you need to pronounce a similar amount of words than the original text.

        Anonymous

        >Remember lip-synching
This game did English first, not an issue. But I'm also not a fan of the unnecessarily long sentence. I'd keep it as something like "a girl on the battlefield? Hard to miss"
Funny thing is that I really doubt random wankers will take out Shiva, so the original script will still work as the girl power fantasy of having her own the bigots or whatever. This sterilization of english writing in gaming isn't fighting problematic messages, it's fighting nuance.

this is the straightforward translation once and for all, and it very much shares the same gist as the awkward OP jap and also the localized, long version in this post

Everyone of you morons shut up now

I've played the demo in both languages and I honestly think neither dub is 100% better than the other, and I fricking hate that fact. Some performances are better in eng and some in jp, some parts of the script are better in english (shit like actually mentioning the apodytery, the rosarian song clearly being written in english first, Elwin's lines, the accents, lore and flavor missing entirely from the japanese script like "Shield" or "Haearann") and some parts of the script being better in japanese (shit is less vague when Clive says "また” when biast dies instead of saying "brother", assassin squad leader is being less vague, Joshua actually sounds like he's regaining his composure during the fall down the shaft with the change in intonation and script from ショウカン…ジュウ > ショウカンジュウ? > 召喚獣! instead of how dumb he sounds in english where he just keeps repeating Eikon and you can't easily discern why, really Joshua just being better in general, shit being less vague in the Joshua awakening scene since the ducal traitors say "構わん、斬れ" instead of "kill him, now!" so it's clear that it wasn't the first plan to kill him, etc.)

I fricking hate it. I wish I could mix and match people's performances and have some people in nip and some in eng, and I want all the lore.

What do you guys even think of the Koji-Fox approach anyway? I feel like its just SE and CBUIII "legitimizing" localization practices like adding flair and flavor and poetic license by having someone in house and involved do it.
Fundamentally, it's basically just the same homosexualry and is different from what the writers actually first make but I can't really find myself hating it too bad if it turns out more or less fine and since its originally their intent to go about doing it.
The main reason I tend to hate localization is cause its usually done by completely uninvolved third parties seeking to change someone elses work.

If the localizer is basically taking part in the writing process directly like Koji (allegedly) is, I don't really have a problem with it. It's not like the Japanese team has no idea what he's doing. YoshiP at the very least speaks English fluently even if he's not comfortable communicating in it at length, and I'd assume Maehiro and Takai do too, to some degree. If they're signing off on the changes he makes as he makes them, and if Maehiro is going back and making changes to the Japanese based on his changes, I don't really see the problem.

There is no proof of any of them knowing english besides some very very basic level, much less when they always need Koji to translate everything to japanese.

There are genuine times where they make pop culture references in XIV that make no sense to a non-japanese person.
That is when localizing makes sense, but rewriting the story is unforgivable.

      >localization practices like adding flair and flavor and poetic license by having someone in house and involved do it.
the problem is that they recruit all these localizers from the bizzarro world shit hole of america: california, and their "flair" and "poetic license" are going to be contrary to the tastes of 95% of the gaming audience. Koji Fox for example is a balding middle-aged gay man, though I suppose that does represent the average modern Playstation gamer.

If they're censoring a mature game to protect delicate sensibilities that they have very few women on the battlefield, then that's kind of pathetic. If they keep doing that, then it definitely lowers my opinion of them.

But if they're just making the first part sound better and to add a touch of humor and characterization to the second part, then I think that's fine. I like that.

It's a lot worse than that. It's in the writing.

          >Readlly bad animation, lipflap is english only and yet it has that weird "detached mouth" feeling. People's faces don't actually move with their mouths leading to an uncanny valley feeling.
          >Combat is a four-string combo on one button, no delay attacks, no heavy/light distinction.
          >Boss fight is in fact boring. Attacks are telegraphed for easy dodges and big damage is only available after a few dodge-attacks are used to melt the stamina/morale bar thing.
          >story is one-note, characters are going to be forgettable at best, annoying at worst.
          >even the running/jumping animations feel really bad. Like worse than 15 bad.
Sad, I thought they could build on XV or something. I guess I'm an anomaly, because I liked 15 despite the mediocre combat and cut story.
From what I hear this is going to be a corridor simulator too, and the demo doesn't inspire confidence. Oh well, guess I can skip this one. Square-Enix quality strikes again.

for almost no damage? it's literally a time-waster. The only real use is using the final magic burst as crowd control since it has a small AOE.

It's more efficient to just spam square with the occasional shoryuken. Would've been cool if they did a nero's sword thing where madic bursting actually did something like build a gauge or something. Otherwise it's mostly just to keep your fingers busy. If I could disable the Morbol AI and just wail on him I bet that MB combo is slower overall than just regular strings.

                Anonymous

it's objectively more dps, just not directly since the magic attack deals extra will damage instead; but knockdown gives a multiplier so it adds up

                Anonymous

I just noticed that MB increased the multiplier ever so slightly. Do I have to aim for perfect MB strings to make that worthwhile?
I just finished the dragoon fight and still haven't had to use any potions and got messages about insufficient inventory space. Weird.
This game just makes me want to replay DMC 5 or elden ring. I just don't think its good man, the combat is still just too simple, the fact that it's so ridiculously linear is not helping. I don't even like open worlds, but couldn't they at least have put in some branching paths for optional or less encounters? IDK feels like 13 in the way that it is just "walk forward and fight these enemies."

I think the change in meaning and personality is somehow even worse than the censorship motivation behind the change. They could have censored it with a "roger that", or whatever, but they made the strike team bloodthirsty psychopaths in order to make it harder for people to notice there are no women among the soldiers.
