If I haven't played any version past the first stage, which version is the "definitive" version that I should get good at?

As a kid, my cousin had this game and I was able to get to the second stage!!!! Real pro gamer in the making.

I've played and beaten both the SMD and PCE versions. They're mostly identical so I can't really rec one over the other.
Never seen it at an arcade so never played that vers.

It's not the amstrad cpc 464.

      >The SGX version will soon be redundant.

it's $400, almost no one has it

genesis gives unlimited continues on the default practice mode

supergrafx version limits the continues and lacks checkpoints

the supergrafx version has better graphics yet shockingly has worse colors and music than the genesis port

Radical, can't fricking wait. Weird how the series went from public hatred to obscurity to a meme, and now we've got a kick ass sequel and this, love to see it.

      Arcade
      >better graphics
      >less checkpoints
      >you have to put up with a FRICKING ANNOYING "enter your name" shit every time you out of lives
      >you can save scum to avoid that but it's not the same at all
      SEGA
      >worse graphics
      >more checkpoints (most notably before each boss), not sure if there's more
      >game over means nothing
Have not touched the other versions, but these two are pretty similar aside from one part of third boss where I can cheese it on the arcade and it never ever works out on the port for some reason.

MG one is smoother ride, especially if you want to sit down and grind the frick out of the game for hours, make sure you are playing on professional tho.

The amount of checkpoints depends on the arcade region. The USA version has the most and is the version the Genesis is based on. The Japanese arcade has the least. Bosses also have more health regardless of difficulty setting in the Japanese arcade version.

Oh I didn't know this, that's neat. So it's Japanese one is actually a hard mode? I Should give it a try.

      Arcade. No contest.

C64 has the best soundtrack for ghosts n goblins. https://youtu.be/Z5ckfd7F3Hg

The amiga version had a better soundtrack.

The USA one has really easy bosses but the actual levels themselves are nightmarishly difficult because the spawn rate is insane, and the enemies move ridiculously fast and are extremely aggressive.

It seems like Mega Driver fans are better than SNES ones. Either that or making things for SNES is pure cancer.

Not that SNES programming isn't more difficult than Genesis, but the reason you see more Genesis hacks is it's low hanging fruit.
Most commercial Genesis games have questionable palettes, weird graphical choices, bad PWM sample playback, bad FM instruments... etc. Largely caused by incorrect and misinterpreted programming guides given to developers back then. This means even neophyte retro programmers can dive in and clean up some old games to modern standards.
The SNES though doesn't have so many easy things. The palettes, sprites, samples, etc. are already fine on SNES games for the most part because there weren't any real hard choices to be made. The hardware already gave you maxed out support from the word go. SNES games' problems are largely things like horrible slowdown and missing content. It takes a much more experienced programmer to outdo a professional in 65816 code and adding back missing content is something you'd have been paid a decent wage over months to do back in the day. It's a big ask for people to do it for free.

I'm saying people will buy old games for the old systems they own. When have they never done that?

This argument supposes that since it happened before, it makes sense to happen henceforth. Furthermore, it fails to understand the why in my question, ergo I conclude that whatever egotrip you're on it must suit you well. I would take no enjoyment in that direction of conversation however.

I dont get what you're complaining about. That other guy said people were excited for the new Darius port, so why not do more ports on games that didnt get a good one natively? Especially for a legendary game such as GnG

Are you saying we should throw away all of our coin-op conversion carts just because MAME is available? That's 60 bonafide awesome Genesis games in the trash.
