Lancer is incredibly boring to level and the first part of the game (ARR) is absolutely agonizing in it's tediousness. You are literally playing as a UPS driver for 80 straight hours with maybe 2 hours of combat. Unfortunately, your combat as a Lancer is pressing 1 every 3 seconds and pressing 2 when you unlock your combo.

if possible, start on a preferred server (marked with a star) as you get an exp bonus. go at your own pace, read the fricking quest text, blue quests are very important to do. side quests are not required for exp, only do them if you want to learn more about the area they're in.
if you feel lancer is boring at the start, you're right. all classes start out that way. dragoon fleshes out very well though. treat it as a single player game if you want
at level 15 go find a The Smith npc. there's one at the starting bar and one outside every dungeon. do your class tutorial. boring, but you get a powerful exp ring along with a set of decent looking starter gear
Take the first expansion (ARR) slowly and as a learning experience, the story starts to kick in for real once you reach HW. Don't be in a rush to reach the endgame, the meat of the content is getting there and there's plenty of raids to do on the way if that's what you're interested in. Yeah jobs are all boring af at low levels, it's one of the flaws of the game, you'll just have to deal with it.
Prioritize quests by doing Job quests (the ones with a yellow exclamation point in the upper right corner of the screen) > Blue quests you come across (except levequests, you can skip those) > Main story quests (the other quests in the upper right corner). Yellow quests are just for flavor, though sometimes you do find one that has important exposition dumps.

you get your first dungeon at around the level 16 main story quest and your mount at around 22 or something.

Quests with a flaming sun icon are main story quests, they should be your primary focus
Quests with blue + signs unlock game features or content, grab them as you go. This includes your class questline, which you must keep up with whenever new steps unlock as you will need to do them to get all your abilities
Normal side quests that are neither MSQ or blue + signs should be ignored completely as they give absolutely nothing and the EXP from them is garbage
The game will be boring until after Titan. Stick to it. It is one of the few times the "it gets good after X hours" is actually not a meme.
If by the end of ARR you're not fully invested but you think you saw good stuff, keep going. If by the end of Heavensward you're not fully invested, then you can give up on the MSQ aspect of the game. Research high-end raiding and if you think you'd like that even though you don't like the story so much you can consider buying a skip, so long as you pinky promise you're going to research rotations and practice on dummys until you're comfortable with them before you jump into Extremes and Savages.
Other than that, enjoy the ride, ignore Gankertards, and avoid spoilers. If XIV clicks with you, it will be one of the best things in your life and you will meet good friends in it.

You will be rewarded for your efforts if you stick to it though, no one in the world dislikes the story. You might get in only for the gameplay but again, really missing out on half of it.
