Punch-Out is one of those series that generally seems to transcend its maker. Most people who know it either love it or highly respect it. Its fanbase is also incredibly mature all I've seen.
Mac and Doc are great winners and play off each other really well. They also won with 77% against Wario and Waluigi by the way.
I didn't like ZigZag very much, at least in context of Sabrina online.

I will say, the one where ZigZag fricked the kid's mom to get revenge on him was kino.
The hands had the easiest bracket to survive out of this Elite Eight. They ended up with one of the biggest margins of 8th place votes I've ever seen in these tournaments.
The Lords of Chaos loss was actually a shock. Many felt the top four by then was a foregone conclusion, yet that was the only match-up that ended in an upset. They got really close too against the Knockout Kings which makes their loss to BING BING WAHOO in finals even funnier.
The concept of Wario is good but shit chara design.
Waluigi is completely shit though in its concept. L reversed is not a letter and they had to call him Waluigi which doesn't make sense. They just felt they had to make a luigi counterpart.

I get where you're coming from here, though I also feel people wanted to stick a little more standard this year coming off the first go at Co-Op. Granted, that was also a lot of canon teams, but definitely a more unusual line-up. Would have been a lot less surprising if the two Elite Eights swapped the order they happened.

He's not as impactful as a King as he was in 2021, but who the hell could have expected Garland AND Grimm to win back-to-back the next two years? If we're looking at Batter on his own merits, he's still a good winner against a slate of generally great ones.
That all said, I do think Eggman should have won that year considering all he had to face to get there. Batter vs. Spamton was fantastic, but it does sometimes feel like Batter won largely off that one match.

Agreed. In terms of how much a winner had done irreparable damage and ruined their respective tournaments, he's up there with Spinel. Say what you want about Recette but Queen is still a great tournament full of top tier winners. I'm gonna bet that King this year is gonna be another trashfire with the super obvious result of AM winning the entire thing. I'm now just hoping that the general consensus on Grimm will turn negative sooner rather than later.
I like Grimm but fricking hell I don't want an AM sweep. Let a legacy normal actual vidya winner that's put forth consistent effort like Travis, Wario, Phoenix Wright, Doomguy win and retire already.

Well the power of friendship at the end isn't out of character for Grimm, although whether you feel bringing in a previous winner for it was a good call or not is definitely down to personal perspective.
While we're on this, I do wonder how much of Grimm's success came from his bracket. He had almost the perfect storm of characters that complemented his best attributes, not to mention some strong campaigns to interact against. I would go as far as to say there was a huge gap in power between the top and bottom halves of the bracket this time.
Considering we almost had an actual dog win, Queen definitely seems to have a higher variety of taste. King is literally >Platinum/Platinum-esque Action game guy

I don't like Racette's game nor her campaigner but I think she would not be a bad winner under different circumstances. OFF is great but I think Zacherie would have been the better choice to win.
Most of Batter's campaign was actually very in-character and a lot of his fanart felt complimentary to OFF's art style, but for some reason the fanart that emphasized the alliance side of the campaign is what people remember best.
Early on he had a couple of writegayging and support. I'm surprised he got that high of a seed that year since OFF was a one time irrelevant game unless you bring up Undertale with it.
The first tournament alliance was actually the Touhou/Lobcorp alliance in 2020, which started because of a freak coincidence of ABIB cracking down on a Lobcorp thread and PMgays finding refuge in a stealth thread, which was also a Touhou thread (which means hijack)

I do think his campaign has been slandered a lot in hindsight. The Schizo Alliance part was out of character overall, but if we're talking Batter's more specific campaigning I'd say it was actually fairly in-character. People were pushing the Roboticization vs. Purification angle a ton by the end. His relationship with Spamton at least was also in character with what we can pick up out of Deltarune thus far: Spamton has mostly given up his sanity and wants to be "freed" by some means, so it actually makes sense that he would be onboard with Batter's purification even with full knowledge of what it entails. The part with him turning into glasses is also taken straight from the game and matches with Batter's RPG protagonist nature.
For all the deserving hate the schizo alliance characters got, I'm just glad they cucked Eggman twice from getting the crown. If I wanted a funny fat frick villain to win I'd vote for Wario. At least he's from a series with actually good games throughout and not from a hyper-autistic mostly garbage series of furshit games. The YTPshit is mostly overblown but that was one of the genuine reasons I got for why people wanted to vote for him. And Wario had more than one person campaigning for him too.

Much as I love Eggman, this is another reason his year to win was 2021. While he had some unlucky factors, this was his big Achilles' heel last time. Wario on the other hand already had people ready to push him if he made Elite Eight, and I expect that to actually happen if he returns this December.
Queen was actually fun prior to the losers' finals shit. The semi-finals and finals in particular were really damn good.

Keep it mind, this whole thing really started because Mikugays and AMgays were constantly b***hing the hosts for a whitelist throughout 2021, and said whitelist created massive drama with characters like Christopher Robin defeating alot of popular picks which kickstarted the whole loser's bracket idea.

Revisionism. Nobody but NSA wanted a whitelist, people were just asking for a rule clause that would allow characters who didn't strictly originate from vidya but had previously participated to still be allowed.

I played both neutral and Pacifist route to see what the fuss for Undertale was, the game actually just sucks. The pacing is horrible, the entire game is just "Okay, this part is kindof shitty but THEN it gets good" ad nauseum until the game's over because it's only 5 hours long, but also feels like it's 20 and not in a good way. The music's good but I've played loads of games with good gameplay AND good music. Nintendo, Rare, Capcom, and Konami couldn't seem to stop doing it in the 80's and 90's.

Story is good, although maybe a little overhyped? It does hit harder by the end of each route, but it's also not THAT unique among games if its kind. The real part carrying Undertale is its characters and moment-to-moment dialogue.
I will interject to say that at its current pace I expect Deltarune to end up being better in both regards.

The only thing "interesting" about it is it takes the tried and true "good, neutral evil" endings of vidya and hits you over the head with it in an overtly obvious manner
Best part by far is the battle system, at least when it's actually challenging to dodge attacks like in the mewmew fight from the switch version. If you had an actual party or build variety it'd be really good but sadly it's even more basic than fricking Dragon Quest 1, you have a single option for dealing damage and that's IT. No stats you can alter, no characters, no spells.
Really it's just prime normalgay bait.

Even if Eggman had a handful more dedicated campaigners I would say he loses. The 2021 parallel was just too much.
Eggman and Wario actually had similar support. They had their more frequent campaigners like Hexanon and Warioanon and then their other supporters like each other's main campaigners, the Wilyanon and the SFManon for Eggman, and then Wario had another drawgay.

Point and Click adventures died off hard as a genre and it isn't one like rail shooters that has people desperately clamoring for a return in gameplay. Return in writing certainly, but out of all the vidya genres you want pixel hunting and inventory management to win?
I think I may have been too harsh on Battler and Jack, it's not so much that they're "bad" per se but rather that their performance and history in these tournaments has just left a bad taste in my mouth whenever I see them, hence I label them as memes. Now onto AM, yeah, I like his character, which is ultimately what this tournament is, a character contest. I do have basic b***h taste and my prefered genre are shooters like Doom instead but I favor AM over more conventional characters for a variety of reasons: his unusual "design" and the extra challenge that poses when shitposting for him, his villainous attitude compared to the mostly heroic chracters that populate the brackets (and also the mostly overlooked tragic aspects of him wishing not to be a slave of war in spite of his power), Harlan just being an odd dude, and the fact that I Have no Mouth is kinda bound to be forgotten to time as the more gruesome aspects of the story will prevent it from getting picked up by any modern...I dunno, studio? And how this is also ironic considering his only enemy is entropy getting to him at the end of time. And that's just a summarised vesion of why I like him, I could go on further but I wan't to go to sleep already.

Glad to see someone else playing Nocturne over the tournaments. I had pushed for Demi-fiend in previous years and felt worried he was a no hoper going into last year, so to see him get 4th was more than a pleasant surprise for me.
It would be funny if we somehow get another SMT pick into the Elite Eight for a fifth year in a row. We've had Aigis, Nyarly, Frost, and Demi all make it. While the first two are Persona, but they're still from the earlier era from the series (or in the middle in the case of Aigis).

I enjoyed Morshu's presence in 2021, but he should have absolutely been an one-time deal there. Series limit is one deal, but King Harkinian doesn't even seem to get enough votes to qualify most of the time.
It's not really fricked per say, but another franchise that seems due to do something meaningful in King is Donkey Kong. Merging it with Mario would be stupid for several reasons, but at the same time it doesn't really justify getting three picks in every time. Both Funky and K. Rool are untapped potential there, and at this point I'd take Donkey Kong getting attention with him doing well generally as a silent pick. Going back to Mario, we've seen that series start to actually break out of its shell in regards to at least the bros and Waluigi. (Last year was overkill with the spin-offs, but I don't see that happening again.)
AM was paired with an Ganker character that was only a contender because of a poorly-received decision by NSA in 2022. He got nominated in so many teams and that was probably the least expected one to qualify. Some said Lain was thematically fitting, but I think AM could have done better and the team was his downfall.
AM and Beatrice was the top voted team but DQ'd cause Beatrice was already paired up in witch b***hes. Basically the fault of the anon that kept nominating a ton of from teams last year.

Keep in mind that he was added because we didn't have the full game out yet. He's way too blunt to be a schizo, but that interpretation wasn't the only one to get out of the big trailer for his game.
You could twist that limit several ways depending on the response, but if you want one that works? AM is great as an antagonistic force, but as a character he does seem a bit too goal-oriented. He's definitely a deep character and his deliberate manipulation towards his victims is fascinating, but at the same time I would say he's not particularly charismatic for the big game he talks. While he doesn't need to be at all to be compelling, I do think that you'd expect a winner to have a little more sass behind his bite. Granted, you could say the same about Batter, but people have also argued about his merits as a winner outside campaigning.
Another reason is that, while his game is well-remembered by quite a few and has some continued discussion on here, it's hardly what I'd call a mainstay in terms of influence either here or in general. There's no real reason to push any of the five humans from IHNM in these, so it is AM or bust. For sake of comparison, Garland went from being more of a footnote in Final Fantasy discussion to a board phenomenon in the course of just a year.

The Serial Experiments Lain game did begin production before the anime, but pretty much only fans of the anime care about it and it's admittedly secondary to it, even if at first that wasn't the intention.
I just want an Ganker tournament. Hopefully that newblood lives up to his potential if the other side tourney hosts give him training wheels.

Punch-Out is one of those series that generally seems to transcend its maker. Most people who know it either love it or highly respect it. Its fanbase is also incredibly mature all I've seen.

He's not as impactful as a King as he was in 2021, but who the hell could have expected Garland AND Grimm to win back-to-back the next two years? If we're looking at Batter on his own merits, he's still a good winner against a slate of generally great ones.
That all said, I do think Eggman should have won that year considering all he had to face to get there. Batter vs. Spamton was fantastic, but it does sometimes feel like Batter won largely off that one match.

Well the power of friendship at the end isn't out of character for Grimm, although whether you feel bringing in a previous winner for it was a good call or not is definitely down to personal perspective.
While we're on this, I do wonder how much of Grimm's success came from his bracket. He had almost the perfect storm of characters that complemented his best attributes, not to mention some strong campaigns to interact against. I would go as far as to say there was a huge gap in power between the top and bottom halves of the bracket this time.

I do think his campaign has been slandered a lot in hindsight. The Schizo Alliance part was out of character overall, but if we're talking Batter's more specific campaigning I'd say it was actually fairly in-character. People were pushing the Roboticization vs. Purification angle a ton by the end. His relationship with Spamton at least was also in character with what we can pick up out of Deltarune thus far: Spamton has mostly given up his sanity and wants to be "freed" by some means, so it actually makes sense that he would be onboard with Batter's purification even with full knowledge of what it entails. The part with him turning into glasses is also taken straight from the game and matches with Batter's RPG protagonist nature.

Much as I love Eggman, this is another reason his year to win was 2021. While he had some unlucky factors, this was his big Achilles' heel last time. Wario on the other hand already had people ready to push him if he made Elite Eight, and I expect that to actually happen if he returns this December.
Even if Eggman had a handful more dedicated campaigners I would say he loses. The 2021 parallel was just too much.

I played both neutral and Pacifist route to see what the fuss for Undertale was, the game actually just sucks. The pacing is horrible, the entire game is just "Okay, this part is kindof shitty but THEN it gets good" ad nauseum until the game's over because it's only 5 hours long, but also feels like it's 20 and not in a good way. The music's good but I've played loads of games with good gameplay AND good music. Nintendo, Rare, Capcom, and Konami couldn't seem to stop doing it in the 80's and 90's.
Is the writing any good, from the way people talk about it they make it sound like Undertale is carried by it’s story.
The writing is the best thing ever. Worth playing just for that alone. I stood up and clapped multiple times. I cried even more.
Story is good, although maybe a little overhyped? It does hit harder by the end of each route, but it's also not THAT unique among games if its kind. The real part carrying Undertale is its characters and moment-to-moment dialogue.
I will interject to say that at its current pace I expect Deltarune to end up being better in both regards.

The only thing "interesting" about it is it takes the tried and true "good, neutral evil" endings of vidya and hits you over the head with it in an overtly obvious manner
Best part by far is the battle system, at least when it's actually challenging to dodge attacks like in the mewmew fight from the switch version. If you had an actual party or build variety it'd be really good but sadly it's even more basic than fricking Dragon Quest 1, you have a single option for dealing damage and that's IT. No stats you can alter, no characters, no spells.

I think I may have been too harsh on Battler and Jack, it's not so much that they're "bad" per se but rather that their performance and history in these tournaments has just left a bad taste in my mouth whenever I see them, hence I label them as memes. Now onto AM, yeah, I like his character, which is ultimately what this tournament is, a character contest. I do have basic b***h taste and my prefered genre are shooters like Doom instead but I favor AM over more conventional characters for a variety of reasons: his unusual "design" and the extra challenge that poses when shitposting for him, his villainous attitude compared to the mostly heroic chracters that populate the brackets (and also the mostly overlooked tragic aspects of him wishing not to be a slave of war in spite of his power), Harlan just being an odd dude, and the fact that I Have no Mouth is kinda bound to be forgotten to time as the more gruesome aspects of the story will prevent it from getting picked up by any modern...I dunno, studio? And how this is also ironic considering his only enemy is entropy getting to him at the end of time. And that's just a summarised vesion of why I like him, I could go on further but I wan't to go to sleep already.

Point and Click adventures died off hard as a genre and it isn't one like rail shooters that has people desperately clamoring for a return in gameplay. Return in writing certainly, but out of all the vidya genres you want pixel hunting and inventory management to win?
For me, part of the problem with Jack Frost is that SMT has some really good picks that could advance over the goofy mascot.
At least Demi fiend redeemed it, got me to try SMT3. Wouldn't have bought it if I knew the game was mostly random encounters but it's still pretty neat.
Glad to see someone else playing Nocturne over the tournaments. I had pushed for Demi-fiend in previous years and felt worried he was a no hoper going into last year, so to see him get 4th was more than a pleasant surprise for me.
It would be funny if we somehow get another SMT pick into the Elite Eight for a fifth year in a row. We've had Aigis, Nyarly, Frost, and Demi all make it. While the first two are Persona, but they're still from the earlier era from the series (or in the middle in the case of Aigis).

Some franchises just are fricked
I enjoyed Morshu's presence in 2021, but he should have absolutely been an one-time deal there. Series limit is one deal, but King Harkinian doesn't even seem to get enough votes to qualify most of the time.
It's not really fricked per say, but another franchise that seems due to do something meaningful in King is Donkey Kong. Merging it with Mario would be stupid for several reasons, but at the same time it doesn't really justify getting three picks in every time. Both Funky and K. Rool are untapped potential there, and at this point I'd take Donkey Kong getting attention with him doing well generally as a silent pick. Going back to Mario, we've seen that series start to actually break out of its shell in regards to at least the bros and Waluigi. (Last year was overkill with the spin-offs, but I don't see that happening again.)
AM was paired with an Ganker character that was only a contender because of a poorly-received decision by NSA in 2022. He got nominated in so many teams and that was probably the least expected one to qualify. Some said Lain was thematically fitting, but I think AM could have done better and the team was his downfall.
AM and Beatrice was the top voted team but DQ'd cause Beatrice was already paired up in witch b***hes. Basically the fault of the anon that kept nominating a ton of from teams last year.

You could twist that limit several ways depending on the response, but if you want one that works? AM is great as an antagonistic force, but as a character he does seem a bit too goal-oriented. He's definitely a deep character and his deliberate manipulation towards his victims is fascinating, but at the same time I would say he's not particularly charismatic for the big game he talks. While he doesn't need to be at all to be compelling, I do think that you'd expect a winner to have a little more sass behind his bite. Granted, you could say the same about Batter, but people have also argued about his merits as a winner outside campaigning.
Another reason is that, while his game is well-remembered by quite a few and has some continued discussion on here, it's hardly what I'd call a mainstay in terms of influence either here or in general. There's no real reason to push any of the five humans from IHNM in these, so it is AM or bust. For sake of comparison, Garland went from being more of a footnote in Final Fantasy discussion to a board phenomenon in the course of just a year.

I think the AM hatred largely comes from perceived power. He has every factor going for him. You had to be there and understand /tnt/. They were OC machines and pumped out friendly mod things fro all their opponents and other characters. Campaigner crowds (pretty much the entirety of /tnt/) respond greatly to that kind of stuff. It kind of swung back this year though as a lot of people regret the glamgals win and we got a very conventional winner.

They will never get far in Co-op, but that is because they already won main tournaments and people are getting tired of their alliance for being the strongest in tournament history. They have had huge thread prominence before and after their wins because of all their OC and roleplay, or now because they are at the forefront of meta discussion.
