Can you emulate PS2 games? Try those first and see if you like AC04, AC5, or AC Zero since they're the framework for how Ace Combat 7 is structured, just with lower ammo limits and limited number of enemies on screen due to console limitations.

I started with Project Wingman as well, and though it lacks in production value and mission variety it's a much more consistent experience to AC7. Missions are mostly "kill everything in the area" whereas AC7, has just as many gimmick missions than non-gimmick missions, and the gimmicks are almost universally awful.
Enjoying that bombing mission? Now go hunt down moving targets with no visibility.
Having fun flying through those narrow rock formations? Now enjoy random lightning strikes arbitrarily disabling your controls. Just disengage from the entire sequence to win!
Another pretty cool boss fight? Now it suddenly moves at 3x speed in a scripted sequence.
First half of the mission is on rails. S ranks are earned through memorisation. They still can't make a tunnel sequence as good Zero's. And then there's that god-awful targeting mechanic that comes in the last quarter of the game and outstays its welcome way too long. They literally named the game after that moronic shit.
Project Wingman has stupid bullshit too, but it's never the mission objective.
A near equivalent made on a tenth the budget, sold at half the cost? Sounds about right.

Have you transitioned yet and/or are you thinking about it? It's a pretty big requisite to playing the series
It's only worth it if you plan on doing hours of co-op. Since the balance of funds is entirely based around multiplayer. It's the fastest way to make money, but the fastest way to get burnt out due to the players having the best possible setups and having years of experience.
Deleting /misc/ would remove these wastes of oxygen from the site.

The anime style story and characters is extremely gay but otherwise the gameplay is fun.
If you are gonna play AC7 don't sleep on the DLC missions.
