The biggest bottleneck would be voice acting, given how dialogue-heavy these games tend to be with both stuff the player hears and random unsubtitled bullshit in the background. Shit's expensive. That and PW's development did take quite the time for it to reach release.

No, not at all. The point is that AC/PW/ACore's storytelling is completely, honest-to-god earnest in its intention and drama. No pretentiousness, no post-post-post-modern irony. You play these games to experience a damn good if simple story, and you're gonna get what you come for.

Now that you say that, I'd say the biggest hurdle would be writing the story, surprisingly enough. You could have all the shiny graphics and gameplay in the world, but if you have a shit story the best you'd have is AC6 aka cheese central

What's the problem with Dawn Aerowar tho? Haven't followed it that closely.

what could they be doing that would make AC8 take this long? AC7 was just a PS2 game with nicer graphics, other than modelling the planes most of the other improvements just come for free with modern engines and modern dev practises yet the dev time has quadrupled like every other AAA game.

Maybe AC is put into lower priority again. In any case, I just hope that they can keep the momentum going

AC4 is the best, both in music and protagonist! I haven't been able to play 5 or 0 due to PS2 trouble, and I want to play those before 7
Surprised this hasn't been posted yet.

The escalation of the plot as Mobius becomes a legendary figure and you realize the letters are meant for Mobius made the story so great. And then the final level to show your mastery of the plane and the fear you have struck in you enemies. It's truly a top tier game.

I dont think this is the case since they built a whole new studio off the back of AC 7's success. I think they are trying to evolve the formula to be more than just a list of missions, so I wonder what it is. I worry because they struggled to make 7 even with the simple structure it had.

Its the same reason I'm super invested in the homeworld story despite it being an rts with almost no characters, barely any dialogue and cheap hand drawn sketches as cutscenes.

The atmosphere is good and the music is great. They dont try to do too much or talk too much, they have a single feeling they want to enforce and they hammer it in.

AC6 was cheese, but it had its moments. Liberation of Gracemeria is kino. That being said, story is certainly important. Project Wingman's story admittedly leaves a lot to be desired, and shit derivative of its style of writing always ends up unbelievably cringe. Starsector faction mods of all things Also, Dawn is not a video game: that's why.

I have the real hardware and a disk of AC5, but the disk reader broke and I'm too lazy to fix it. I tried emulating but it kept skipping the cutscenes or it would have graphical issues so I lost my drive and gave up. I honestly prefer emulation for higher framerates or clarity but not at the cost of the game getting ruined.

Idk why but I'm very partial to PW's story. It hams everything up with the same seriousness of Zero and somehow manages to be very intense and not at all cheesy. Also helps that I engage in Prez waifuhomosexualry. If there's one thing AC can take note is having voice-acted WSOs. Male or female, it doesn't matter.

        >Maybe AC is put into lower priority

The reason why 7's development was such a bumpy ride was because the higher ups didn't have hope that it would succeed. We proved them all wrong, so things are gonna turn out right in the end, probably. If anything, the long delay proves that they are really committed to this.

Prez a cute, too bad the best plane for her for the longest time is the F-14D which struggles with later missions. PW plane loadouts suck, frickall for SP. Weapon options on hardpoints It always irked me how on two-seater planes nobody cares for the person in the back. Granted, it would have made AC5's story incredibly busy if it followed Project Wingman's example.

Gryphus would slap half these frickers and he'd do it in a sick Neucom prototype.

Hey, I wasn't asking for a remake, just that ACX is closest to 3 in the timeline so far and has several COFFIN equipped planes including an early Delphinus as just normal parts of the roster, which hasn't happened since 3 since the Falken is always a bonus. Plus Gryphus 1 is one of the few protags to canonically fly a fictional jet with the delta-rific Apalis.

They scrapped AC 7 a year before release and rebuilt it, it was the devs fault not bamco, The lead dev even admitted the game was boring and there were requests from the team to remove him but the boss who I assume was a bamco higher up defended him.

Ace combat is so simple its hard to stand out in the modern era, if they aren't hitting a home run with amorphous shit like mood and OST its really easy to get something mediocre.

            Anonymous

It might be simple but its premise is unique. There really isn't many arcade flight combat games out there, and what 7 demonstrated is that modern normies can eat that formula up. That ACore 6 has been such a big hit would acclimatize them further to the tone of AC. If they hit another homerun with 8 then they'd be raking in dough, that's for sure.

Never really bothered to play any outside the Trinity. I did play a bit of Electrosphere, but I found it creepy.

    4 > 0 > 5

4 is the best written and directed game story I have played. I was caught completely off guard by it, not knowing a damn thing going in. It’s the perfect length, and the cutscenes contextualize the missions perfectly. Gameplay is the weakest and no widescreen support, but it is still very good. More mission freedom, too, which I could see as both a positive and negative. Damn near flawless.

0 has the better albeit more strict mission design. Very silly game, but some cool moments.

Everyone should play 5, but not more than once. It’s too dense and the characters will get annoying. It may not be the weakest of the trinity depending on who you ask, but I think everyone who has played all three is either a fan of 4 or 0. 0 fans probably like it more because the plots are so interconnected. In any case, it’s weaknesses are only apparent in subsequent playthroughs. For the first time, it’s the best damn game ever.

I got kinda burnt out three-forths into my first playthrough of 5, despite the story really picking up steam at that point. It's quite a whiplash from 4's short and sweet. And about 4, while the mission is very simply, as in nonexistent, one thing it does better than the other games is physics. There's a weightier sense of momentum in 4 that I find sorely missed in 5 and 0.

Are the PS2 ones actually good?

Try either 4 or 0. 4 is easier, simpler yet more poignant and somber. 0 is bombastic, gripping, and sets the tone for the rest of the series better.

        Anonymous

That's part of what makes X so good is it uses 4's physics. You can really feel the starting Phantom fighting you to move in any direction other than 'forward and fast' and it makes the later jets feel more different even between themselves in ways other than 'turns tighter/rolls faster' since you've got stronger momentum going on. It definitely throws you for a loop if you've gotten used to the later games where pretty much everything turns on a dime and angle-of-attack detachment is reserved for intentional usage of ez-mode high G turns. Nothing against 5 and 0, I just wish they'd kept the heavier feeling of 4 (and 3, for that matter).

Damn straight, I loved every last fricking second of it. The final mission was the icing on the cake. That soundtrack, god the heavenly soundtrack

I kinda want a Cold War-era AC that encourages us to fly more third-generation fighter jets. Maybe the superweapon could be "big scary nuke missile", though that would seem kinda tame compared to what Belka and Erusea cook up a decade or two later.

The only reason the Lighthouse War lasted as long as it did was because Osea couldn't get him to come out from his cozy villa in the Comona Islands, he deserves a break already.

        you forgot to mention
        >the second time he b***h slapped them, he got them in A DAY. A SINGLE DAY.
        >ISAF command assesses combat capability to be greater than an entire air squadron's

Imagine if they could have gotten him out there. Sol Squadron would be shitting themselves in fear. "Downed every ace my generation" my fricking ass.

I think he's supposed to be retired in North Point.
WEIRD how the Eruseans leave a country wide buffer zone around it during their continental invasion. Couldnt imagine why.
