Not enough gatekeeping. Visual novels are far too easy to make. I’m an absolute moron, too dumb to build a computer, and even I managed to make a half finished visual novel using TyranoBuilder. The hardest part of the process is commissioning art assets, which is just something you can throw money at and it only applies if you’re serious about selling a commercial product. Basically, something so easy is going to attract the worst types of people, people too lazy to learn to code and program a proper indie game are going to look at visual novels and realize it’s perfect for them.
To be honest nowadays Japanese people are all about the alternative lifestyle shit. Otaku is kind of dying off and the zoomers took over. They call them terminally online but more accurately the zoomers are referred to as "Reiwa". It was only a matter of time.
I'd like to believe the market for this has to be pretty fricking small. Real Aro/Ace schizos have to make up a percent of a percent of people, and why would they want to play a game where the main objective is just to reject people?
