Try Risen 1/3 OP. Or Witcher 1 if you haven't played it. Maybe Dark Messiah?

I just never really heard people recommending the games too often or heard what really makes the games distinct. On top of that the games all feature the same character so I'd pretty much have to start with the first game, and there's at least ten of them.

          >hasn't played a single falcom game
          it's called being based...
          >Favorite ones
          >Kingdoms of Amalur
          nevermind, he's a homosexual.

The story is shit, but the build variety and combat is fun.

Sell me on the Ys games. The seem rather geeric.

They are. Not sure why the hardcore fans shill it to death. They are solid games, nothing groundbreaking.
Ys origin was fun, I did skip 98% of the story though.

They are to jrpgs what sonic the hedgehog is to platformers. I can't take anyone that hasn't played ys 8 seriously.

They are more fun than they have any right to be. They aren't masterpieces until you find yourself trying to find similar games and go "huh, Ys was actually pretty fun"

And what are the differences between Ys and the closest one?

I think the most similar one would be Kingdom Hearts. Both have good music, a simple combat system that can be described as mahsy but it actually feels good to play and control and an over the top JRPG plot that's actually charming. Don't expect Ys to wow you away with its production values because they pale in comparison.
Compared to KH, Ys games are always new adventures with the same protagonist so you can play whichever one looks better to you. The older titles are on the shorter side too, focusing their replayability on things like Nightmare mode.

They're extremely generic. Do not listen to the fanboys.

The latest entries are similiar to the best ARPGs you had back then on PS2:

            Dark Chronicles
            Dark Cloud
            Rogue Galaxy

A lot of soul and the feeling of Adventure is superb in these games.

I tried that as more of an action-adventure.

Got it, I'll pcik up Ys VII then.
