That mindset is literally the only thing saving them from full frickery and the chaos gods know there needs to be an undivided champion or the whole destruction crusade wouldn't even leave the drawing board. Chaos knows enough to pick someone who hates them, but hates the enemy of chaos more.
Abaddon is kind of a homosexual, which is common to 40k characters. Archaon had a whole arc where he just wanted to be a good priest of sigmar and then got fricked over repeatedly and found out he has daemon heritage and that he was prophecized to ruin the entire world and then prayed to Siggy to help him but received no help, after suffering for a gorillion resurrections because he was kysing himself he decided to fulfill the prophecy so he could gain the power to frick the chaos gods up.

They added new lore in the Old World main rulebook about the Old Ones wanting the world to be destroyed to fulfill their Great Plan.
According to former GW heads, the Old Ones plan was to create conditions for the rise of the chosen one who will defeat Chaos forever.
So, Archaon progressed the Great Plan of the Old Ones by destroying the world. The Mortal Realms the rise of the new gods. It was all planned. Within the lies the key to defeat Chaos which is incidentally Archaon's desire.
Ergo, Archaon is a good guy.

There's a "spark of goodness" in all the most wretched of villains, it's what convinces them that their villainy is actually righteous.
