The extent of his water theme is being able to swim

      Anonymous

Its related to the theme because his name is the okinawan word for sun (pronounced tida) + s

  4. 8 months ago

but in kingdom hearts his name is very clearly pronounced tee-dus by wakka.

voice actor fricked up and no one noticed i guess. sad. It's an understandable mistake to make, which is why we hear it made so often.

        Anonymous

No, that is the correct pronunciation. Tidus is not a tide pun, it's an accidental localization of "tiida" the Okinawan word for sun while "yuna" is the one for night.

The Pokémon anime called Arceus like 3 different things none of which were correct based on the obvious English origin words it has and it was proven in Gen 7 with Silvally.

RKS System = ar-kay-ess. Which was obviously how it would be said from an English speaker's perspective. Especially because you know they don't want you saying "arse" in a Pokémon name.

Agreed, it's not like Sin is in the water or a large part of the game revolves around water, or blitzball being a thing. Or the main character comes out of the water at the end.
I don't understand why people think such a thing either.

Or that spheres are literal water containing memories or the Farplane is represented as an ocean of the dead with how they swim through it or that there's a special mechanic involving underwater battles that is restricted to specific characters, or that the main character's iconic weapon is visually a glass sword filled with water that inflicts water element damage, or that the main character fills the role of the water element Aeon or that the primary aesthetic of the game is island themed.

Tide-us is essentially a happy accident in localization but one that is a pure stroke of genius and should be maintained as it outright fits the character infinitely better than even his original Japanese name without losing out on inherent symbolism, even Yuna's name being connected to the moon in relation to his name is still maintained. Final Fantasy as a series is no stranger to this either. OP is just trying to make a blatantly poor faith comparison to the Cait Sith thing where the name is written the same (because English writes things in a silly way) but pronounced differently to mean nothing.

What I wanna know is, if this is a debate in the first place, does that mean no one ever says his frickin name the entire game?

No one ever does say his name in the original game due to being able to set it yourself. It has been pronounced Tida in some instances like Kingdom Hearts 1 and later Dissidia (likely due to people's reactions), but it was also pronounced Tide-us in Kingdom Hearts 2

        ?t=19
There's a video by James Arnold Taylor the English VA himself where he explains the circumstances that resulted in Teedus (a random translator they pulled in for a Japanese-only trailer showing at the last minute to read things off in English for impact) and because he's a nice guy he concluded that the way to pronounce it really comes down to the individual person and there's no wrong way around it.

I guess it can get a pass pre-voice acting, but once you start getting into that territory, it's time to drop the ability to name everyone. Even Nintendo had the sense to drop it in BotW because there were voiced scenes and Link's name is said multiple times throughout.

Yes and Bartz is "Butz" and Terra is "Tina" in Japanese versions.

      Anonymous

The people demanding it should be pronounced "Teeda" are essentially saying that Terra should be pronounced "Teera" because it's closer to her Japanese name of Tina which is meant to be an unusual name, except not exactly like it because it just isn't and don't bring that part up. All while completely disregarding the logic and reasoning behind the name of Terra which fills that same purpose.
