After years I finally got a Sega Saturn emulator running. I never played this system, never even saw one in real life. What games should I play first? I like action adventure games and puzzle platformers. I know there's no Sonic game but that's ok.
And what controller should I use? I have a series x and a dual shock 4

Yeah, my DS4 has a good dpad. 6 buttons is weird, my sega had for(a, b, c, start), the DS4 is technically 6 buttons too because it also has a select button.
DS4 should be fine, you want a good d-pad. Because Saturn uses a 6-button pad you may notice some weirdness or difficulty adjusting to it, but try out games like psychic killer taromaru, twinkle star sprites, cotton 2, digital pinball necronomicon and elevator action returns. oh I didn't mention any 3D games. Panzer Zwei, Sega Rally Championship, Bulk Slash are all cool.

I forgot to say anything about your recs, that pinball game sounds fun, and I always head that Panzer Dragoon is the best rpg on the system. I'll check them out when I get a chance.

Mednafen supports a much, much better Saturn emulator. It's a bit more annoying to set up but totally worth it. Just take the time to set it up.

Port, but I suggest emulating the arcade version instead. You can increase the resolution and use a widescreen hack if you're into that sort of thing

Check out Solar Eclipse, cool cutscenes, good dialogue, and fun gameplay. the game style is kind of similar to starfox 64.

Fixed it for you. I crossed out every game that either sucks and/or is better on a different platformer and not worth playing on Saturn.
The Saturn is complete shit and I fell for the hype years ago and left completely disappointed. You could have made a case for it back in the 90s but these days you can just get the real versions of all its Arcade ports. Take those away and all you have are objectively worse versions of games on PS1 and a couple of incredibly mediocre exclusives that aren't nearly as good as the Saturn die hards would have you believe.

Guardian Heroes. Its pretty much the only saturn game.
Everything on the saturn is pretty bad to be totally honest, and you can trust some of my opinion because I'm not a total homosexual. The people that legit worship the saturn still know that the only shit actually worth playing are the exclusives, not the arcade ports because those can be played on literally fricking anything. Megaman, resident evil, tomb raider, etc.. all the multi-playtform games are functional but still less impressive than those same versions on the Playstation 1. Panzer dragoon Zwei and Saga are worth playing. Maybe one of the Megaman X games, but I mean... you could play it on literally any other console at this point. That "list" is more for collectors or some shit, because a lot of Saturn games are disgustingly overrated by a very loud tiny minority of Saturn fans who go ape shit whenever the Saturn comes up in a thread or people start asking about games.
tl;dr version Everything genuinely good about the saturn has been ported outside of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Nights is overrated and half the shit on Saturn has aged embarrassingly badly.
