Overall the tourney was just ok, not a lot of close/inventive games. MBL vs Jadwiga was the best set of the tourney and it was ro16.
T90 put on a good show, but I think the scene is just in the midst of Heradomination/Old pros waning/New pros learning and so a random seed tournament really didnt shine like it did in earlier years where the top 16 were all closer in skill level. Each set felt one sided. Granted if it isnt Hera as Vasco that does recontextualize things

It's terrible when it happen to you but when you see it in tournament, it's great.
Hera's rage moments are second only to MBL and Heartt.Jordan has only quit again in the past few months, MBL has been full time since June, and apparently Lierrey has school. You can b***h about the time between patches but aside from pathing that do a substantial job of addressing bugs and balancing the game along with tons of QOL things for people not in the multiplayer/pro scene. Viper invented quickwalls sure but not everyone can do that. Hera has nothing but encourage a playstyle of sit back and boom because aggression in AoE2 is poorly rewarded along with spam hussar to win. Quickwalling will never be a "meta" for anyone outside of the top players. Hera is more divisive/controversial than popular. Daut and Viper are popular and their video thumbnails might be gay as frick but I don't see them making homosexual ass titles insulting a tournament they eventually won.

Yeah I was going to say, the reason AOE2 is such a turtely game that rewards booming is because anytime before rams and mangos, buildings just generally aren't going down. So Hera just made a bunch of strategies that encourage booming, and there's no real meta that's going to top that. The best anyone can do is pick maps where that's a weaker strategy, and he gets a counterpick where that's a stronger strategy so it evens out.

A 30 year-old RTS game pulling more than 40,000 viewers is not impossible to get sponsors for, and the AoE2 community throws money at T90. Also consider that AoE2 is still actively receiving content updates, and as long as that's the case Microsoft will continue to support the community.
I don't know what the final prize pool was, but consider that half of the donations after the initial $50k went to "the stream". While that includes production, editors, etc., the total doesn't reflect money from Twitch / YouTube subscriptions I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a good financial incentive to organize another tournament like this.

I've tried and have watched past few TI's and even got into Dota few years ago but the game is so fricking boring to look at even at pro level, it's also visual clutter mess to an experienced eye, even casters don't know often what the frick is going on.

What can I say, I just don't like Dota, even when playing it I keep thinking how much visual clutter there is and lack of cohesion in unifying team based stuff vs. what opponent does and if it was improved, it could be so much better.
We have our preferences, for me it's AoE and for you it's Dota in the end.

They pick a server in the middle to try and balance the ping but that's about as good as it gets. The bigger issue has always been coordinating times to play.

Really? That sounds like a player diff to me, I haven't ever seen scouts only dominate games, at best I've seen them pick off some vills and buy tempo for map control in early castle in equal games. How did Hera win with scout spam?
Area denial, robotic like micro, forcing idle time, and in many cases the opponents doing the most moronic shit.
Also first 2 games of final opp ggd upon hera's castle age notif by min 18-22 and you could hardly call them premature. He was already that far ahead with only a few scouts denying berries and annoying woodlines.
That's rough, usually 2 spears and a few quickwalls are enough to keep early scouts at bay. I guess if opponent doesn't get to wall and with god tier scout micro it's possible to really squeeze the enemy economy. I'll have to watch the finals myself lol, sounds like a skill issue to me but taken to the extremes a spear will never touch a scout and can only protect 1-2 vills at a time so I guess with perfect execution scouts can force too much idle time or walling resources for their cost.
I wouldn't nerf scouts because games can be too turtly as is.
Someone brought up MaA being trash so I'll throw this moronic suggestion in there: MaA gives +1 melee armor to all friendly units within two-tile vicinity. Slightly speed up spearman movement as well. The extra melee armor will make it much harder to snipe vills before the slightly slower spears route around, and it's a buff that's defensively stronger since it's a slower unit with low range.
Larry was also very off today. I think it was more Hera realized this and pushed scout control into a snowball. He didn't give Liereyy a second to breathe.

They aren't shit, defending players just make 1 or 2 while depending on falling to tc/micro/quickwalls while the attacker gathers 10+ scouts and still somehow the defender loses race to castle. It's so fricking weird.
