Age of Empires 4

>no HRE campaign
>no Delhi or Abbasid campaign either
>new expansion only going to add a single Ayyubid campaign
Anyone else here hoping they might add more campaigns?
Norman Conquest was mostly a tutorial campaign but I really enjoyed the 100 yrs war one and currently playing Mongols. Feels a bit like a shame that the game launched with only one non-Euros campaign.

AoE2 has more campaigns but honestly it's sometimes fun to play a different game from time to time.

ehhh, I prefer how literally every other Age game does campaigns and has them progress through the ages rather than AoE2's campaigns where you start 90% of the scenarios in the Castle/Imperial Age.

Though AoE2 probably does that because the game doesn't really get going, especially when it comes to destroying buildings, till the Castle Age.

        Anonymous

Mission design is also a bit more varied than in AoE2 at least.

Yeah, buildings were very tough in AoE2, rams were a pain in the ass to use, campaign scenarios had you break through networks of walls, towers and castles, and before you get bombard canons and trebuchets, your only other ranged siege weapon was a garrisoned tower. I guess it's thematically appropriate to put you in these defensive stalemates but it drastically limits the way these scenarios can play out.

Don't forget the classic AoE2 hey butthole here are five opponents and the farthest one from you is building a wonder scenarios.

5 opponents wouldn't be so bad if they didn't constantly drip feed men toward you for 90 straight minutes of BAA-BWAAAAHH!! DONG-DONG!!

why does every unit in this game have a massive pike as a weapon, watched few streams of people playing and it looks comical and 10x times worse than aoe2de

so everyone is pikemen in that game? because thats how it looked like, even scouts

          Anonymous

You have spear infantry, light spear cav and knights have a jousting lance that shatters on impact.

What would an Abbassid campaign look like? A doomed defense against the mongols?

Since campaigns in AoE4 cover centuries you can make one about the Rise of the Abbasids and their golden age. First few missions are about fighting the Umayyads, then on to fighting the Chinese and finally the big wars against the Byzantines. Of course now I realize why there wasn't an Abbasid campaign. Byzantines weren't in the game on launch while using Rus or HRE as stand-ins would've been really awkward.

It's clear they wanted to make this a live service game, thinking that since the expansions for 2 and 3 took off that a new game would do the same. They should have just brought back AoE Online cause that was both good and had incentive to play. I think aoe4 gets a lot of unneeded hate but I can still see why it does.

The biggest issue is that it stepped on aoe2's toes by being set in the same era

          Anonymous

I don't think this is really much of an issue. The AoE2 audience are basically hardcore boomers that won't play anything else. Which is fine really. So it's not even like the games are competing for the same audience. AoE4 is mostly there to get new customers and players that didn't play AoE before.

But AoE3 didn't take off. It has half the player count of AoE4 on steam and its all time peak is barely higher than AoE2's current player.

I thought so myself. Medieval times are by far the most popular historical setting so I wouldn't be surprised if AoE5 was also about that but with altered mechanics catering to yet another new playerbase.

              Anonymous

AoE5 might another Rome one. They just did medieval so going back to antiquity would make sense.

I've played through all the AoE2 campaigns and a little ranked multi. I also played through all the AoE4 campaigns. It's not a bad game, but I'm not sure it's a better game and it has much less content than 2. I appreciate how they tried to make civilizations a bit more different in 4. I personally didn't enjoy the history channel aesthetic, but that's down to personal taste.

One thing that annoys me about this game is the shitheads who get pushed by like 10 MaA at 10 mins and fricking quit the match.

Instantly fricks over the game when its 3 v 4, glue drinking dickheads... happens every third game

In big games even if you get shitfricked early (but not to death, thank god losing landmarks no longer means elimination) you can come back and contribute because opponents sacrificed economy to cripple you and your teammates should be strong.

But some people just want to be the fast imp hardcarry and won't tolerate setbacks

Still a sweaty esports type game
        More specialized civs than 2
Farms fit perfectly around a TC or mill
Runs worse on toasters and arguably looks worse than 2 (3d bad)

          Anonymous

it's easier to learn than 2 imo, even though the civs may take longer to understand
          >houses add 10 pop cap instead of 5
          >you start with 6 vills instead of 3
          >the sheep follow your scout after finding them
          >can't lure the animals as they have an aggro radius
          >the food from animals doesnt decay
          >you see more of the map at the start
You build up your economy much quicker than in 2 thanks to the villager diff, it is possible to go feudal at around 4 minutes.

            >it's easier to learn than 2 imo
            Absolutely not
AoE2 is much more readable. AoE4 is filled with stupid fricking gimmicks for civ "bonuses" that both make them tedious as frick to play as well as being unintuitive as frick.

it was in a bad state at launch and took over a year to get into somewhat decent state
so not that surprising people still have that impression
aoe2 players see it as a threat maybe too idk, too slow and complicated for some starcraft players (4 resources instead of 2, random map generation, less emphasis on micro) and I don't mean complicated as necessarily good or bad, just more complicated
though one of the biggest aoe4 streamers is an old starcraft player (beastyqt)

        Anonymous

and in a bad state I mean it lacked basic features like key rebinding, custom maps, even player chosen colors, it was so full of bugs that the balance was significantly affected by it

          Anonymous

          >even player chosen colors
I realize this is nitpicking but anyone else disappointed that in campaign the player is always blue and the enemy always red?
It works fine in the French campaign where you fight England almost exclusively but playing blue English/Normans felt so weird. I really hope this is something they'll address in the Ayyubid campaign and make the player a color other than blue.

        >too slow and complicated for some starcraft
most sc payers played aoe2, aoe4 just released in terrible state missing basic RTS features (like bottom panel with unit hp and ability to select and deselect them from it), it looks like crap even rally points are jarring (i unironically prefer 13 year old sc2), it has way higher pc requirements and costs money, meanwhile i can play sc2 for free

If this translates by less macro, but more micro(meaning each unit is so valuable that you can't let them die), then I'm in.

How strong would their units actually need to be for a low unit count army to be viable? AoE's kinda always been one of those games where you spam units until your win.

          >AoE's kinda always been one of those games where you spam units until your win.
Anon? Have you never played this game?
You need to control space and push advantages.
Making this work would likely involve quick construction of defensive buildings, units somewhat resistant to hard-counters, and an emphasis on supporting units.
