i hope they buff handcannoneers soon
Red ends up winning this game btw
Not surprised, Saracens are a much stronger civ
I love the hint of voyeurism I feel watching these low rank 1v1 games and seeing how people think, I swear I can never predict who will win, I'm constantly surprised by people when they turn things around.
spirit of the law and drongo are nice to listen too
if only the bulgarian player took all the relics he has 5 of them on his island which which is equal to 6 villagers constantly digging gold ( without taking the population space ) but then again i didnt match the whole match either just assume from this picture
>Handily defeat aggressive cheese
>Lose to regular play
I don't know how to feel about this...
Sounds like you were a fifth of a second too slow clicking one of your villagers in Dark Age, thus eventually dooming your entire economic progress from early castle age on
Sounds like you don't play the game.
You're right, there is at least 30 seconds of gratuitous leeway.
Not generally no, every time I try I get bored with how most of a given civ's stuff has no purpose, the average building is built to buy only the same two upgrades, you always go knight or cbow or scout with no real variation, uniques usually aren't worth it, castles are usually only worth it to be big towers/make trebs, etc etc
And even when there's a cool rebalance or interesting civ mechanic it doesn't matter because it's not the meta anyways and if you play vs AI it will generally do the same thing so what matters is how many minutes to get your pikemen and not much else.
I spend more time in the scenario editor than anything else, hell I've probably spent more time scripting AI or random maps than actually playing, and it's been this way for fifteen years now.
Sounds like you need to drop your elo and play 'Comfy Medieval: Sim City Wars' with the rest of us.
Yeah I was thinking about sandbagging to crash my ELO but I don't think I can get it low enough because I don't actually want to kill villagers, I just want to honorably line up my armies and raze only military buildings and fight other armies and achieve wonder or relic victories.
But like 96% of the playerbase I have never actually played on the ladder and don't even perform consistently well against AI higher than moderate
I learned the theory of the game when I was a kid, I have watched most spirit of the law battles ever, and I am used to spamming the same counters over and over, I just have no skill for or interest in micro or carefully timed and optimize economic builds or booming to 150 vills or whatever.
I don't even want to make more TCs.
That's a phase. You will grow out of it. Play the game.
Stop posting like a troony
Ah, right.
>That's a phase
NTA but you'll grow out of it
>He doesn't play the game
Go frick yourself.jpg
I was like that too a few weeks ago, hated moderate because of how fast the AI progressed and attacked me. Funny enough I was even scared to play online again other people, looked up some fast castle build orders and I just do that lets me get the eco out of way and easily managed so I can focus on the fighting but I'm a lot better just from practicing online. I must have lost the first 15 games straight before I hit my rank.
To mention though this has completely sucked the sovl out of the game though.
I know how to do a fast castle. I have done a fast castle.
I do not enjoy doing fast castles.
I love it, I love the optimizing.
Not me, it takes the fun out of the first two ages for me and means I'll be doomed to be clicking a villager every other second in castle to "keep up"
I just want to play at 10 APM
>hated moderate because of how fast the AI
The AI that doesn't attack until imperial age 30 minutes in??? I've fricked around vs CPU for a couple days since I bought the game and my feeling is that the bottom 3 difficulties should have been combined into just one, I'm relentlessly bullying the moderate AI even though I don't build walls, I don't use any hotkeys, my TCs are sitting idle, I forget to control my units and they wander off into a castle and die while I have 5k of every resource etc. That should be the easiest difficulty experience, but moderate is like halfway on the scale. It gives the player the wrong impression, I think.
>Didn't learn the game beyond the basic level
>Didn't learn how generic tools factor into a civ's gameplan
>Didn't learn about non-power options
>Doesn't evaluate uniques individually
>Plays to get the AI to acknowledge his cool new outfit
>Been this way for 15 years
Filtered beyond belief. It shouldn't even be possible to get so thoroughly thrashed by a video game.
>I don't play the game because of beliefs I hold only because I don't play the game
it's like a snake eating its own tail
>no bro it's totally nothing like it is because I said so
No, he's right. You really are shit.
The problem with most RTS games is that the higher the skill level, the more boring they get to play. The funnest matches are always the semi-intermediate skill level ones between friends.
>higher the skill level, the more boring they get to play
hard disagree
on low levels most of the matches just boil down to "both players are quitely building their base for 20 minutes, conjure a death ball, they clash and whoever had the bigger deathball wins the game" or just do the most cheesy all-in rush in the beginning and win or lose based on it working or not
the higher skilled you get the more you can manage doing constant trades with the opponent so matches rarely get dull
I agree tho that playing with friends is the best, mainly because it's always better playing with someone you actually know, puts a lot of extra mindgames into the matches.
it means you must aggressively cheese
I like to analyze their building distribution on the minimap and assign them psychiatric disorders.
what are the psychiatric disorders of the players in the OP pic?
>Blue
Post-traumatic stress disorder, he's obviously been hurt by water battles before so he's trying to hide away in the middle of his island and 1 sneaky little dock and a few fishing ships hiding in the back but he's afraid to commit which is ironically the reason he ends up losing and furthering his avoidance.
>Red
Probably depressed
Haven't played in a couple of years. Did they completely abandon 1 and 3?
No. Both got definitive editions, then they ported 1 to 2's engine via a DLC for 2. They also made a 4.
I know about the DE versions, I just vaguely heard 2 and 4 were the only ones getting updates. So how does 1 work in 2? Like completely separate mode or can you actually play as mixed civs from both?
It's a separate mode you pick at the main menu.
AoE1, 2, and 3 all got Definitive Editions. 1 was later ported into 2's engine. AoE4 was released. AoM is currently getting the Definitive Edition treatment.
>AoM is currently getting the Definitive Edition treatment.
BASED. Wonder how they'll handle the Chinese.
hopefully they delete them as well as the *tlanteans
from what little they stated, they did promise that the chinese civ will get a major rework, and while not related they did also imply that the other civs might also get multi god powers as well since to them its not ideal for only the atlanteans to have said multi use powers
Retold is going to be shit because the one thing they should do but aren't doing is axing the expansion civs entirely. They were bad and make the game worse. If they want to expand the roster it should be a clean slate. The choices for potential new civs are obvious: Mesopotamia, hindus, and mayans.
Also I imagine retold will mess with the AoM core design either towards Empires 2 or 3 rather than being a faithful re-release of a game that frankly should be available in its original state. The EE is offensively bad.
Why did they release both as "updated" versions on Steam before selling the REAL updated versions separately? I'm not giving Microsoft any more money no matter how good the DEs are, I already bought them on disc and on Steam.
Because those things were like 5+ years apart and well before they decided to remake the entire series + make a sequel.
3 gets about two large patches a year, one dropped just days ago, though it didn't have any new dlcs in a good while. I guess they're busy with Retold.
god I wish galactic battlegrounds got aoe2de's treatment
F O R T R E S S B L O O D
how are my fellow aoe4chads?
what dlc civs have you been playing?
aoe4 sucks ass and is a cartoony-looking movile game
Tatars are the best
They could not handle the Keshik Krush.
BATTAL
just wanted to say that its cool and soulfoul that you guys made that
11
I have fond memories of playing team games 2 players 1 civ
Frick people who rush.
Just learn to deal with it.
Post your ELO and fav civ. I wanna see power levels and homosexualry.
>1300
>Vietnamese
>700
>Poles
>1400
>BoHEEMians
>about 2000 games on DE
>only ever play FC into 3TC and relics
I'm physically incapable of going aggro pre-imp. Grug like big armies. Grug also hate massing xbows, only shiny paladins, monks and MAYBE hand cannons
how fast can you get to FC?
Dunno, I usually have two mins over opponents. I go 13 food, 5 wood 1 gold. Create 3 vils to gold/wood and immediately click up. I'll play a match today and take a look.
Yeah mb, I lock byzantines for that
>Bohemians
>Paladins
Bohemians only go up to cavalier.
>Around 1600, 1700 was my max
>Maybe bohemians because I like their half + houfnice deathball and monks, and their campaign is my favorite one
no handcannoneers as bohemians? how quaint.
900ish
random civ
I had 1600+ in 1v1 for some time when I was actively playing MP, now it's close to 1200 in 1v1 because I only play 2v2 with my autistic friend and because I got worse at the game without practice, can't put all blame on him. When I picked a civ I always picked Goths since I was a kid, and they continue being my favorite civ to this day. When we played team games I won 1v2, 1v3, and 1v4 games with Goths when my teammates almost croaked, sometimes even without any slinging (granted, most 3v3 and 4v4 games were against low ELO players, of course), they're just a wonderful one trick pony that makes it really easy to surprise people with unorthodox plays when they expect you to huscarl spam right from the get go. That being said, I usually play full random because it's the most fun. Like finding out you have Britons against Vietnamese and still pulling through - feels good.
1500
Lithuanians
The 2013 version of the game is shit in comparison, but I've tried to switch to the definitive twice and always end up refunding because I just can't handle how much worse the definitive edition looks
Hey guys, Spirit of the Law here.
What's with those squares on the ground? Is this a cheat?
What a cute comment.
>cheating in a replay
gotta get every advantage you can get, i guess. might change the outcome
of the replay
>both players ignore water
>map turns into a glorified black forest match
Cannon galleons, Black person.
I really dig Hindustanis uniques
Predictions?
If Celt does a well-executed feudal age push, he'll win. If Italian player fast castles despite that, he'll have a big advantage. Overall Celt win rate is also higher, so it's safer to bet on them, human factor notwithstanding.
A few moments later Blue gives the "GG Too much early pressure"
With that kind of farm placement I can only assume the ELO is not that high.
Maybe like 800
>farms in the back because he's so afraid of raiding
>tower near wood camp in case opponent raids it
>houses at the edge of the map to not get stressed when opponent's militiaman bonks them accidentally when left in aggressive stance
Peak comfy.
why the two walls by the tower?
Significantly more difficult for a desperate attacker to get a surround for a very low price.
>21 minutes
>Total pop count is barely above 50
Why is blue hoarding all that food?
Why would you put a tower to defend your woodline instead of your gold?
I only play with my Steam friends and I'm too afraid to try matchmaking.
That said, I love a good Frankish knight rush, even if I can't execute a build order properly.
Take the plunge into matchmaking it's pretty fun at the not sweaty ranky, you get to see everyones unique ways of playing and strats, pretty neat.
>and I'm too afraid to try matchmaking.
Don't be. They're shit.
Best gunpowder civilization?
Turkroaches. Not because of win rate or anything, just because you have the highest chance of getting bang for your buck from their gunpowder units in an average game.
Turks if you didn't hotkey your Unis.
Italians if you can't manage eco
Spaniards if you have exactly one brain cell
Portuguese if you're evil
Bohemians if you're cheesy
Burgundians if you're a masochist who REALLY likes Age of Empires 3
Hindustanis if you don't like knights.
>Portuguese if you're evil
? I understand the rest but why that?
Devs overbuffed Portuguese with the berry change and the organ gun rework.
From reading this discussion this is just another example of how "esports" ruins everything. It's literal the touh of rot and poo. Unlike coop campaigns which is the touch of gold.
Nothing stops you from playing both. I loved playing coop campaigns with my buddy. I managed to get Vlad Dracula killed like 6 times in that one 50-minute mission, fun times.
Age of Empires would be so perfect if they just combined it with the alternate win conditions of Civilization....
There are custom scenarios with unique win conditions like point capture, relic win etc., you should try some.
Wonder victory? Relic victory?
WONDERS DUH
When they going make an Age of Empires clash of heroes game?
if you own the game, you will have all the tools to make this in a scenario yourself ,guides are on youtube aswell . hf
aoe definitive edition made me realize how much better aoe2 actually is. it's night and day.
Are there fun MP maps in this game like back in WC3 or is it all tryhard homosexualry?
Age of Empires is old as frick so there's probably all kinds of MP maps, from tryhard to casual
AoE by default plays on random map presets, randomizing the terrain and resources. It's about as casual or tryhard as your peers and/or ELO make it out to be. Historically people have made a shitload of scripted multiplayer scenarios for AoE II, things like CBA, Roll the Dice, TFF Racing, etc used to be a lot more popular. There's also a selection of special maps where the terrain and starts always form specific patterns.
>I get bored with how most of a given civ's stuff has no purpose
Some unique/regional units and bonuses are situational but don't be ridiculous.
No matter what I do on this game, the fonts look all shitty and aliased. I've tried playing with the font scale and stuff and nothing fixes it.
What a comfy map
ahaha this guys a mess panicking after blue went to castle age
>tfw get filtered by the campaigns
Holy shit the AI is brutal!
Why do the French have superior castles to all the other civilizations? That's not historically accurate at all.
they do? whats special about them?
They're cheaper
Ah like roman towers in AOE1. no penalty for it?
Franks don't get bracer, heated shot(EXTREMELY useful) or treadmill, that's pretty much it.
Does definitive edition ever go on sale?
I don't want to pay full price for the same game a fourth time
It does I got the whole compilation when it was on sale.
winter sale coming soon expect a sale , it also goes regularly on sale on itself or right when a big dlcs is about to be expected
These guys are absolutely duking it out
it's over for blue
Yeah, it was pretty close though, lots of questionable decisions for sure. It always ends up to whoever is able to adapt the quickest. Red switched to halbs as soon as he saw the elephants early and blue kept making hussars despite red only making pali's and halbs.
Blue backdoored red with some siege rams while he was invading blues base, I don't even think he noticed! What a twist!
Red now has no villagers and no TC
he's going to convert one
Psych! One of his own hussars killed it.
Beautiful looking game (with a great ost also), but the actual competitive gameplay seems stressful as frick
>mountain royals is more expensive despite having one less civ
why is this allowed?
Not just more expensive but 50% more expensive than the pre Romans dlc which is a dramatic price hike
they found the golden ratio of effort/buyers
why are the dlc not in the gamepass version?
Turtling in campaigns for 3 hours is real AoE2. The stupid villager counting minigame known as ranked PvP is strange anomaly and no fun
Oh no he aged up before me and dropped a castle and killed two of my vills I am done for. Gay!
>5 Patavium has started building a Wonder!
>2 Aquilea has started building a Wonder!
>3 Mediolanum has started building a Wonder!
>4 Verona has started building a Wonder!
MAKE SWORDSMEN VIABLE ALREADY YOU COWARDS
How would infantry be viable when archers and cavalry exist?
The only infantry I actually enjoy using is Huskarls because they're near-immune to pierce damage, are decently fast, and get produced in huge waves.
by making them actual spear/skirm counters for a starter
currently they can't even do that without already having fricking 3000 resources worth of upgrades
but regardless these units are just weak as frick. They have been getting like 10 consecutive buffs over the last decades and they still suck, it just shows how unsure the devs are about their actual strenght
for example there is also no reason why squires needs to be a castle age tech instead of a feudal one, there is no fricking reason why MAAs need to be straight up slower than skirms or archers when archers already hard counter even celtic speed MAAs
I think infantry could be a purely defensive unit. Tanky as frick, take no bonus damage but also do no bonus damage, basically always win 1v1 against the other types at upgrade parity, and held back by having mediocre speed.
somethhing must be done
you just turned infantry into picrel which is also shit because of their speed
unit speed is a fricking overpowered stat. the ability to choose which engagements you can take can make or break a unit. this is why plumed archers are so busted
> which is also shit because of their speed
it's not just speed, there is no reason why this unit shouldn't have at least a bit more pierce armor
in fact there is no reason why infantry in general has so little pierce armor when fricking Mali with their +1 free PA swordsmen are still not used over other options
like yeah, infantry Should be countered by archers but currently they are countered by them WAY too hard, and it's like the scale of this is just not taken into considerations
You can trade a 1000 resources worth of knights with 1000 resources worth of pikeman, and pikeman will only win with around 1/3 of their HP left
meanwhile if you do the same with infantry vs archers you will still have like 80% hp on your archers after all the infantry are gone
cavalry should be more expensive and archers should have a limited arrow count before they have to go back to an archery range and restock. Infantry is viable again. Unfortunately metagays rule the patchnotes so expect archer/cav meta for the next 100 years.
If you made cav more expensive it would ultimately turn infantry into cavalry so now spearmen have no role in the game and there's no proper counter to archers. Archers would have to be more expensive as well.
>turn infantry into cavalry
if they suddenly got a 500% movement speed bonus for no reason, sure, they would turn into cavalry. Otherwise you're talking out your ass
>so now spearmen have no role in the game
they still counter cav. Cav is still viable but can't be amassed instead of infantry like it is now. Historically cavalry is very expensive and limited, infantry is what you're supposed to amass and smash against another mass of infantry on the battlefield
>archers should have a limited arrow count before they have to go back to an archery range and restock
that's the stupidest fricking thing i've ever heard
OK, enjoy your stutter stepping xbow meta forever.
>builds archery range in front lines to reduce travel time for newly created units
what now homosexual?
I dont like seeing the maps of the competitive scene. they're boring.
I prefer the comfy custom maps made by community and developers for marketing purposes
I love this game so much it's unreal bros
The absolute best remake I've ever seen, there's really no reason to play HD edition unless you're Fatslob I guess
I really enjoy tournaments that have their own mapmakers and force pros to learn how to adapt to a completely new and memey map
Dumb video title, but this is still one of the absolute best games of AOE I've ever seen, and the map played a big part in it
that's cool, but I was talking about maps that are totally customized or represent real places and that have lots of details.
The clock is ticking for red and after an hour and a half of getting spammed by horses blue has thought of making halbs
Incredible comeback
blue takes it home
>aoe2 thread
>expect game discussion
>it's actually just twitch chat for e-sports homosexualry
i fricking hate this board
Watched these guys have the most autistic villager battle on black forest earlier today
>DEFINITIVE edition
>has 9 DLCs
>he doesn't solely use the Scenario Editor to play Sim City
Ishygddt
>tfw brewed a fresh cup of coffee and replaying all the old campaigns
It's a good day boys
