      Currently having a game with Rimworld right now as I got a bit tired of Dwarf, but the cycle goes on and on.

      Trying Medieval Only mods. Found a shotgun in an Ancient ruin which is weird but I'm just going to say it's some advanced tech from an ancient civilization that once lived here.

      Turning babies, through genetics, into ticking timebombs that can only be prevented by administering beer into their system.

    DF's steam release dispelled all the mysticism around it so hard that it couldn't even maintain a general thread for more than a couple months, turns out every funny rumor and scenario for it was purely fabrication of bored autists. the dev (toady) completely abandoned any gameplay in favor of making a purely redundant 'storyteller engine'
    dwarf fortress might be the biggest example of wasted potential in the entire vidyagame industry as a result

      it didn't "remove the mysticism", it just put all of the mysticism behind a curtain of user friendly UI, ironically, so many game mechanics ended up being hidden by the new graphics version.
      they also dumbed down the game a lot, if you start in a calm area with minerals, no aquifer, no enemies around and just rush steel production, the game becomes piss easy, then they decided to set up "minerals everywhere" and a bunch of easy mode stuff as the default for world gen even more

              It's interesting how you guys are talking about how DF is shallow, but your difficulty is heavily dependent on where you build your fort, which is a feature that is completely lacking in rimworld, you will be attacked by the same 4 factions evenly spread around the map sequentially no matter what

      Start with a purpose, then make blueprints that achieve this quickly. Trim the fat to make compact designs, and keep a catalog of these constructs/orders ready. Beautify as desired, find the most efficient way to get the resources and output desired, and apply that to the schematic. I'm going to modify this so it works with the new cargo boats.

      A big tip: Set the first two hours of the day to be for recreation, keep all animals in secure areas, assign areas for colonists with dedicated roles, and make use of the "Haul" and "Deliver" tasks for your less-skilled colonists.

    Well, let's see what the last five substantive updates for Dwarf Fortress were.
    > Artwork update (Procedural face sprites)
    > Performance update (SDL and Multithreading)
    > Artwork update (Baby creature sprites)
    > Artwork update (Crop sprites) and Content update (Arena mode)
    > Artwork update (Classic Graphics Mode)
    These updates were spread across about 7 months.
    If Dwarf fortress was appreciably improving at a reasonable rate then I might have a different opinion, but looking at this I really can't summon up the enthusiasm to care anymore.
    So yeah, Rimworld wins.

        The multithreading update is the only spark of interest in this lineup - but its really hard to work up excitement over an improvement that at best buys a scant few more in-game years before lagdeath hits and renders a fortress unplayable.
        Additionally you'll notice that there are no actual gameplay additions. It's primarily spritework and reincorporating old features.
        How many more years do we need to wait for the magic system, or a working economy, hell - is the villain update even fully implemented at this point?

          My dude Ive been playing this game for over 10 years and you will need to try harder. Your entire post is so disingenuous. DF getting any performace improvements at all let alone multithread was completly unthinkable by the communty at large until the steam paycheck dropped and putnam was hired. And with only a few months of work we already got the first steps into multithreading the game alongside performace improviments. FPS death fearmongering is such a meme and only works on peple who never played this game or are literaly playing on a toaster.
          Also what is your proposition here, that that Toady should drop adventure mode and bugfixing to carry and continue with development plan? and if you think that magic or working economy is something toady could just do next year if he wanted you are completely out of you mind or never heard of this game and its devopment.

          Why it shouldnt happen? Every game is liable to loose fps as you add more stuff into the screen, memory and processing power doesnt come out of nowhere, why should df be any different? The only difference I see here is that usualy other games devs try to enforce some limits into the gameplay that they feel best so as to preserve the game perfomace, meanwhile in df the player is free to do what he feels best and if he wish he can set population caps.

          with how the game operates, multithreading will be a 5 years of completely re-writing the game to gain maybe 5-6 frames per second
          if you want a 20 year old, 250pop fort on a 5x5 embark just play modded DF2012 before all the bloat was added
          the World Activation in DF2014 on its own reduced framerate by 40-70% depending on the game settings, and shit only got worse from there
