Anyone who reads Japanese would have called it the same thing before the English release of GSC, all they had to go on back then was "セレビィ"

It wasn't a mis-spelling. That's what everybody called Celebi back then. We had to wait like 2 years after it was first known about for it to get an English name. He probably chose Serebii as the website's name because he assumed it would be Googled a lot at the time.
I remember even as late as Gen IV we had this. We had to call Lucario, "Rukario" for like a year while we were waiting to find out its English name. And whilst some people did guess that Lucario was likely we could never be 100% sure. I remember we were calling Tangrowth Mojanbo. And I think Magnezone was Jibacoil. Can't rememeber the rest off the top of my head but the point is that they all had Japanese names that we had to call them by until we got the English names. Serebii was Celebi's, wasn't a mis-spelling as far as I know.
