The third mental lock puzzle I saw the first 9 and knew the answer was going to be 999 because it would be low enough of Uchikozki to put it in the game. Disappointed Mizuki or Aiba didn't make the meta connection.

I genuinely miss clunky old escape room gameplay, clicking on arbitrary objects with arrows over them and then answering a trial-and-error multiple choice question just doesn't cut it for me. There's so much empty space to run around for no purpose other than to run down the timer.
      Tearer's Somnium was alright.

Speaking of which, the trailer made it seem like the split-second choices were going to be important or have some influence on your path, but in reality they just force you into a choice about 90% of the time. The only time I liked it was in Lien's Somnium leading to Gen where you quickly unlocked the door

Kind of funny that the game released on PC at the same time as Caligula Effect 2 and the latter's story is all about the simulation theory. I've been playing them side by side and it's pretty trippy.

          Anonymous

          >the latter's story is all about the simulation theory
It's not really simulation theory. They're literally in a simulation. I don't think that counts as a spoiler since it's the premise of the game

VLR's bonus chapter promising a few plot threads that didn't come up is very different from if AI3 doesn't address the revelation that canonically the AI world is a simulation. That's kind of a big deal.

It's just a gag ending, you're not meant to take it seriously.

        Anonymous

If it's just a gag ending, then the big twist of the whole game is completely pointless since its only purpose was to get to that specific ending and for Tokiko to reach Moksha

          Anonymous

Huh? The big twist was to fool the player by hiding the 2nd Mizuki. Tokiko's ending is just a fun extra for completionists. Kind of like the dog endings in Silent Hill games, if you've played those.

            Anonymous

The big twist is the timeline shift

            Anonymous

I'm talking about the twist making you think you're playing the game chronologically. None of the characters are aware of the switched timelines and it has zero impact on the story overall. The only purpose of it was to confuse the player into thinking that the events are taking place chronologically which was to create the X's in the flowchart and the whole Nil number thing to cause the divergent timeline to occur.
The twist of a mystery should be tied to the narrative, so if the only reason for the twist was for a gag ending then it makes the whole mystery feel pointless overall.

          Anonymous

And how exatly did Tokiko make the timeline when she was still within the simulation? All that was important was to get the nil number from future to past

AI2 heavily, heavily relies on coincidences and outright lying about what's happening. It's ZTD level of "there was another person always off-camera, no one just thought to mention them". Where AI had one fantastical element central to the plot (psyncing/psync machine), AI2 constantly comes up with more and more bullshit to cover up the ever more elaborate situations.

If AI was Uchikoshi's best work, then this one is easily his worst. It's a disaster, both as a mystery and as a piece of fiction in general.

Do you often go around making declarative statements about what year it is to people? The reason present day Mizuki doesn't clarify the timeline to herself is that she doesn't need to because it's a basic fact. Ryuki spends half his scenes in schizo delusions about when he's working on the case too.

They talk about the dates because they're either the time of death for a victim or an event like Valentine's or the rocket launch date. The year doesn't come up(aside from when they point out "Jin" on the field dying 6 years ago but having a time of death within 12 hours) because it's not relevant. You wouldn't say "Tokiko was killed 8 hours ago, February 12th 2045. Not like 6 years ago, when we found Komeji's right half."
Honestly if anything the fact that nobody talks about there being 6 year time of death game on Chikara/Komeji/Tokiko's left halves is a huge hint about when they happen.

You're not completely wrong but the game is such a shitpost I can't really be mad. The whole ending is giant joke. It almost feels like a parody of Uchi games. A schizo fever dream. Especially with Tearer cosplaying as ZTD Zero. I don't know what I'm suppose to take seriously.

      Anonymous

I generally dislike the twist, but I think the rest of the game is still good enough to put it above ZTD pretty easily.

I think that if a twist only exists to trick the player and it doesn't actually affect any of the characters in the game, then it's a poor twist on principle. I get that the player is kinda sorta a character in the game, but it's not properly fleshed out like it was in a certain other Uchikoshi work so that doesn't really deserve to count. VLR's main twist was crazy too but it at least feels fair at the end of the day since its actually at least tied into the plot instead of being "haha I tricked you!"

        Anonymous

VLR's is honestly worse to me. Sigma never notices his voice is different, the player isn't allowed to hear his voice despite the rest of the cast having VA, and at the end of the day the game has done little to convince me that Sigma is capable of doing any of the shit he's supposed to do following the ending. You can't just call someone a PHD student and call it a day, Sigma barely understands any of the scientific concepts mentioned in VLR for fricks sake.

I mean Date is wearing a mask so you wouldn't know if he aged or not. and amame does age, she's wearing her school outfit in the past and has a casual outfit in the future like the other girls.

I remember when I was playing the first game and there was this scene where you examine a dead woman's body and everyone is sad, and then 10 sec later it's all sex jokes and shit.

Many reviews complained about this actually, so the 2nd game is a bit better at it.

Yeah you just have to accept in this series they do random shitty cringeworthy musical numbers. It might not be so bad if it wasn't awfully translated from Japanese and sounds moronic in English. Also they use the VAs instead of singers so it sounds like shit on top of the words being moronic. You just gotta hold skip through the songs and fight scenes and its a pretty comfy game. 1 is anyway.

Maybe the developers wanted the player to feel embarrassed so when the bad times come, you will feel even worse.

Seems like only Amame's model was significantly upgraded between the games, everyone else looks the same. Amame was just a generic mermaid in AI1, hence her model being simple. I don't even remember if she had a name in AI1. IIRC sometime towards the end of the game it's revealed that she and Iris are friends but that's about it.

Okay I just finished the first game. I avoided basically the whole thread just in case of spoilers, but I'm not sure if I'm sold on getting the second game yet.

The first half of the first game (I got the Iris route first, don't know if that matters) was almost unberable cringe for a large part of it and I almost uninstalled multiple times, but kept giving it a chance. It really felt like the game could not take itself serious for more than 2 minutes straight, almost literally sometimes. However, by the second half, I was actually pretty absorbed into the plot and it kept the weeb cringe jokes mostly to a minimum. I was totally hooked in the last 5~ hours and I thought it was actually a really good murder mystery, and I could suspend my disbelief enough for some of the plot holes.

Is the second game more of the same? Will I have to suffer through a lot of unfunny garbage to get to the good stuff? Also what is canon for this game? It seems like it's still old Date.

The second game has even more sex jokes and the murder mystery is impossible to solve on your own because the game is setting up a meta twist for the last chapter.

Probably wouldn't recommend if you barely got through the first one.

      Anonymous

AI 2 is more of the same shit, uchikoshi games are more about the journey than the destination.

It's mismatch of really cringe parts with some memorably good ones. So if you are going to play it, expect more of the same. If anything the second one goes full on goof mode.

Also what is canon for this game?
the canon is the ending of the first game, you see old date because he is wearing a mask of saito because "people was already used to that face and it's more popular with the ladies". They pretty much covered shit up to not spoil newcomers that play the second one with playing the original first.

      Anonymous

      >It seems like it's still old Date.
if you turn on spoilers for the first game, they asspulled that he's just wearing a silicone mask so they don't have to record additional VA lines or reanimate every scene with Date in it

We never see Ota's mom, which kinda sucks. I wish she at least showed up for a second to mention how her treatments were going. The only time she is mentioned is when they say she is in the living room watching tv.

Are porno mags speeding up Date's processing to 3.6 times normal rate supposed to be a Radical-6 reference, since 36 = 6^2? The math doesn't exactly line up but 3.6 seems like a specific choice.

off topic to AI but how the frick did they screw up the novel mode gimmick in the re release of 999 so bad bros? How hard would it have been to just have dual screens like if you were using a DS Emulator? Just finished the OG version on melonDS and it's so much better that way than the nonary games version that I played years ago

      Anonymous

It's a shame we never got a 3DS version of 999. That was their last chance to naturally have 2 screens but add voice acting, the flowchart, and other improvements in the enhanced port.

        Anonymous

Yeah or an alternate timeline where the wii u didn't flop and they actually did a full 3D version where the game pad is akane and the TV is junpei. Still though, the novel mode idea was such a bad idea. It would have been so much better to just have 2 screens next to eachother and a little pop up when you start just explaining the game was meant to be played on 2 separate screens or something. Novel mode made no sense at all.

          Anonymous

How did they even explain the twist in the new version?

            Anonymous

They didn't really. They had "Escape mode" and "novel mode" or something like that and you hit tab to toggle between them. The first mode would be the top screen on DS with Junpei but since you wouldn't get the extra context stuff outside of dialogue that Akana provides, they just add it to the text box anyway. Novel mode is supposed to be Akane's side but it just winds up being the same shit written in the other mode but without sprites and stuff like that, just a novel. They present it as if you can play or read the game but then at the end when they put it all together it takes over and switches for you back and forth. Made very little sense to me when I played it at first and very contrived.

Komeji, killed by Uru. Kidnapped from Dvaita as revenge, his right half doesn't get a chance to be placed correctly since the Iris gang come in, his left half goes to Misetan to replace the body he took

The actual most unfair mystery in the game was how the body got to the center of the field. They tell you "oh there's no way someone walked it here there's no evidence of tracks" and then like 10 hours of Ryuki route later when you unlock the Mizuki routes, the answer is just that the game lied to you and there's actual a tire track along a field line as well as 2 more pieces of evidence.

      Anonymous

it was dumb way before that because they said people walking on the field would leave tracks but there were no tracks on the field despite all of the police standing there investigating

Nothing DOES matter because it truly is a simulation. As it is, it feels tossed in and something of that magnitude should've been a more central plot point considering it is a fundamental part of the game's universe.

          Anonymous

By nothing would matter I mean there would be no point theorizing because anything could happen. Say for example if the timeline stuff really was just all glitches and Tokiko just came alive. As it the mystery and what happens does matter because it's played straight in the story, the simulation stuff is just a final twist/mindfrick that they don't get to address here but hopefully will in AI3.

          Anonymous

That's what I mean. My problem isn't Naix being real, because using that as a double red herring would've been really funny and well-done, but I'm not a fan of just how large their stake in the story is. Having them just be a bunch of loons that you visit here and there would've been better for the world AI set up

the immortality bit being the only thing that Tokiko calls out specifically as being a lie when you talk to her, which is interesting as Naix believes reality as a whole to be a lie, so maybe it's a particular sticking point between Naix and the Order of %.

It's a pretty nice language in my experience. Might just be the novelty of SOV and the fun yojijukugo and, for lack of better terms and knowledge on my end, "logographic based" expressions, but I fricking love speaking japanese. Not only does it sound good because of the high vowel to consonant ratio and the simple phonetic inventory that manages to avoid sharp striking sounds most of the time which makes it pleasant to the ear, it also has the character of making grandstanding proclamations or outlandish expressions (like in weeb media) sound cool.
”三十六計逃げるに如かず” would probably sound clunkier if translated, and taking from the game, stuff like the yoji jokes like Lien mistaking 七転八倒 for 七転八起 wouldn't be as hilarious

I don't know, maybe "Of the thirty six stratagems, fleeing is best" or something.
I mentioned that I feel it sounds clunkier translated because the topic drop aspect of JP allows you to say the expression in exclamation or duress. Sort of like how you'd say "When all else fails, retreat!" except translating it like that misses the Sun Tzu reference which is all of the fun

I like Tokiko's plan but I don't feel like she actually did anything. Like how exactly did she mess with the players UI to show out of order events? Am I supposed to believe that she somehow has the ability to grant Mama a supernatural entity that will explain this to the Frayer?

The game tries to convince me that nothing supernatural is going on but everything Tokiko is able to do is in the realm of magic.

      Anonymous

Tokiko doesn't actually do anything supernatural. She is aware of The Frayer's existence and way they see events as proved by her breaking the glass statue in the future so they see it fixed in the past, and she orchestrates events to break causality when a random number crosses over. Other than that everything done is just mundane.

I don't understand how you can play the game not not conclude Ryuki was at least a little interested beyond the professional in Date. There's definitely a lot pointing toward Tama/Ryuki and it's more realistic since Date's gone back to Hitomi by the end of the game, but from their intimate physical(but not sexual!) relationship to Ryuki just saying he loves Date, it's at least a possibility.
