I just finished VLR for the first time after playing 999 13 years ago and not remembering much of the first game. I enjoyed it a lot. I remember one of the major reasons I didn't play VLR on release other than being too poor at the time to buy it and not finding a copy near me was that people were saying that it ruined Junpei but he was a great character in the game. I thought he was dealt with a lot off respect. I didn't play ZTD either because, well, I didn't play VLR and I heard for years that ZTD sucked ass and didn't resolve any of the plot points in VLR. Gonna play it now, how bad can it be? I wish VLR had the summeries that AI has though, trying to keep track of who was alive and who went through what doors was a real pain.
Also, my opinion on AI:2 is starting to sour a little bit after spending more time away from it. I still like it, but its really weak on the character relations that made the first game so good and focuses too much on the le epic Uchikoshi gimmick twist. AI2 was way too convoluted for its own good and part of why I loved AI1's murderer so much was that his motives and methods were all fairly intelligent and mundane, Psync machine aside. Still liked the game a lot though.

It's more plausible than you'd think, honestly. A sense of obligation and social pressure to keep up positive appearances (and this is Japan we're talking about) would be motivation enough for some.
I mean, regardless of if the child is hers or not, a lot of people have misconceptions about childrearing especially when they have their first. And Mizuki canonly was a handful, even at Aioen, and was said to cry all the time. It's not a stretch to think that Shoko simply didn't know what she was getting into and just thought it would be easy because she was able to skip the infant years.
How does her not being blood related to Shoko/Renju invalidate her arc? They were still the people that raised her from so young she can't remember the time before.
Not that guy, but the choice Mizuki made felt more meaningful when it was between Date and her blood parents. Now that we know her parents adopted her, it's just choosing between one set of adopted parents and another which is a lot less impactful than her picking Date over her biological mother and father
But there's no practical difference, Shoko and Renju raised her from so young that she basically spent her entire life with them before Date. The choice is still between the people you grew up with and the found family you feel truly comfortable with.

I don't dislike it but Aiba's English VA doesn't really capture the tone of her JP one, which is hard to ask for anyway because of the difference between Japanese and English, but I can't like her as much because of that.

I don't understand how you can say that about Tama, an AI who literally goes against her programming and creators for her partner. Ryuki was interesting too in his development which included sabotaging the case he'd been obsessing over and his subsequent atonement. I wish he got a bit more punishment though.
Isn't Iris also attracted to Ryuki or am I remembering wrong? Some dialogue where Iris was in Ryuki's car and she said something which made Tama jealous.
She's also pretty selfless and caring towards other people as well, especially with how invested she gets with the Endas. I didn't expect to like her that much and oversimplifying her character (which you can do for every AI character, really) does her a disservice. Most characters in AI are really just "Horny, and also another character trait" if you really wanted to break it down that way by purposefully ignoring other aspects.
Even though I really liked NI I hope there isn't a third game. NI already pushes the limits of believability with its craziness and it would ruin the whole "sequel is a mirror image of the first game" thing this game bends over backwards to do. If that wasn't enough they're probably going to pull that no spoilers shit again preventing the characters from growing or addressing things in any meaningful way. Bibi not going to be in 3 so what's the point?

? You're saying that Date lost his character development and we don't really see that at least in the 6 years past timeline. The only thing out of character for him to do is wearing Saito's mask for Hitomi. We barely even see Date in the past and for all we know, that's because he's with Hitomi.
Was curious on what's the typical initial player count for VNs so I checked a few of the more popular ones on Steam. Obviously going only by all-time peak isn't going to give a good estimate on total sales, but the numbers seem pretty good in comparison.
Because AI2 follows the final ending of the first game even with the spoiler protections, so it makes sense that AI3 would follow the final ending of this game which is divergence. And the game is leaning further and further into the simulation / reality etc stuff in addition to further showcasing how shady ABIS is.
Instead of following up on the many loose plot points from the previous games it just does a disjointed sequence of largely plotless dead ends followed by a twist the ties with shadow hearts covenant in my personal ranking of worst fricking twists ever.

I don't think they rolled back his character development, so much as you're not seeing Date through his eyes and missing out on his internal monologue. He doesn't act particularly out of character aside from wearing the mask in front of Hitomi. What I'm more mad about is that they ruined Date's happy ending. Aiba was the one that got her character development reset and she's the one acting like Date's a stranger when she shouldn't. And after all the shit Falco had been through, he immediately gets amnesia AGAIN and wanders around for 6 years.

I just finished VLR for the first time after playing 999 13 years ago and not remembering much of the first game. I enjoyed it a lot. I remember one of the major reasons I didn't play VLR on release other than being too poor at the time to buy it and not finding a copy near me was that people were saying that it ruined Junpei but he was a great character in the game. I thought he was dealt with a lot off respect. I didn't play ZTD either because, well, I didn't play VLR and I heard for years that ZTD sucked ass and didn't resolve any of the plot points in VLR. Gonna play it now, how bad can it be? I wish VLR had the summeries that AI has though, trying to keep track of who was alive and who went through what doors was a real pain.
Also, my opinion on AI:2 is starting to sour a little bit after spending more time away from it. I still like it, but its really weak on the character relations that made the first game so good and focuses too much on the le epic Uchikoshi gimmick twist. AI2 was way too convoluted for its own good and part of why I loved AI1's murderer so much was that his motives and methods were all fairly intelligent and mundane, Psync machine aside. Still liked the game a lot though.

It's more plausible than you'd think, honestly. A sense of obligation and social pressure to keep up positive appearances (and this is Japan we're talking about) would be motivation enough for some.
I mean, regardless of if the child is hers or not, a lot of people have misconceptions about childrearing especially when they have their first. And Mizuki canonly was a handful, even at Aioen, and was said to cry all the time. It's not a stretch to think that Shoko simply didn't know what she was getting into and just thought it would be easy because she was able to skip the infant years.

Most characters in AI are really just "Horny, and also another character trait" if you really wanted to break it down that way by purposefully ignoring other aspects.

Was curious on what's the typical initial player count for VNs so I checked a few of the more popular ones on Steam. Obviously going only by all-time peak isn't going to give a good estimate on total sales, but the numbers seem pretty good in comparison.
Because AI2 follows the final ending of the first game even with the spoiler protections, so it makes sense that AI3 would follow the final ending of this game which is divergence. And the game is leaning further and further into the simulation / reality etc stuff in addition to further showcasing how shady ABIS is.
Instead of following up on the many loose plot points from the previous games it just does a disjointed sequence of largely plotless dead ends followed by a twist the ties with shadow hearts covenant in my personal ranking of worst fricking twists ever.

I don't think they rolled back his character development, so much as you're not seeing Date through his eyes and missing out on his internal monologue. He doesn't act particularly out of character aside from wearing the mask in front of Hitomi. What I'm more mad about is that they ruined Date's happy ending. Aiba was the one that got her character development reset and she's the one acting like Date's a stranger when she shouldn't. And after all the shit Falco had been through, he immediately gets amnesia AGAIN and wanders around for 6 years.
