I'm pretty sure Uchi first wrote the timeline twist plot with Ryuki as solo protagonist, then realized that Mizuki as psyncer is a cool idea and tried to fit her in as 'second' protagonist, and had to come up with Bibi to make it all work. all character interactions had to be nerfed to avoid spoiling it early.
As much as I love this game as gaslighting simulator experience, the cost was too heavy.

I was replaying some parts of the first game and it's amazing how much more interesting of a character and how much more development Mizuki got being a side character in the first one vs being a main character in her own game. There's just way more emotional scenes over her feelings towards her family and showing she's still just a vulnerable little girl despite how ridiculously strong she is. In 2, you don't get that impression since she solves almost everything with her physical strength and doesn't really experience any emotional hardship, making her feel way more static as a character. Even the thing with her parents not being her real parents had zero emotional payoff since there's no scenes after the reveal with her coming to terms with that and it's never brought up again afterwards
I saw it coming a mile away sadly. The first game already wasn't good at realizing the strengths of its characters and using it for the narrative's benefit(the best development being in non-canon routes, iris getting so much focus despite being more of a plot device than a character, date ending the game not feeling resolved as a character despite us knowing him as so strong and charismatic up to then). Uchikoshi probably just saw that Mizuki was popular and gave her the protag role without stopping to think about why she was loved in the first place.
One area that I think 2 really took a hit in overall is the loaded character relationships that did a lot for developing the cast of the original. 1 had Date/Mizuki, Ota/Mayumi and Iris/Hitomi, which regardless of how you felt about the individual characters most people agreed had memorable moments of very solid writing. 2 really only has Komeji/Shoma(and Amame), and as much as I like them something about them lacks the punch the first game had with its relationships. Most of the emotional impact comes from Komeji making bad decisions and dying unfulfilled with Shoma obviously going to be carrying regrets for the rest of his life. The situation is miserable yeah, but the writing itself is middling and both Shoma and Komeji's somniums don't come close to touching Mayumi's.

I just want to throw out that I do not believe The Frayer ending is a canonical ending. It was considered "chapter alternative", glosses over basically everything, and does not have a credits sequence.
It's just a for fun "what if Tokiko was right all along" ending. She didn't provide context to her methods on that route because you arent supposed to think too much on it.
Secondly, I fail to see how The Frayer invalidates Ryuki. We merely represent his gut instinct and reflexes, even on the The Frayer ending, he is shown having his own personality and agency, separate from our own.

it's the whole point of Naix's plan, the Frayer's always there. It's part of the ARG as well. It's an alternative timeline, just like how the first game had alternate endings too.
The Frayer is Canon no matter what, the scene with 'Mama' talking to then happens in the main route. Tokiko is right no matter what and Diverge is the end that actually teases dealing with this fact.

Honestly, my assumption is only the non-resolution routes are simulations. They're Wadjet-run simulations of potential alternatives which is why people with AI-balls have memories from them.

Reminder that the ENTIRETY of the resolution route was created by Tearer's plan by dividing the name Dahlia Boat into 2 universes and having the frayer first make Ryuki remember that. The world further divides by having Mizuki know a password she shouldn't (notice how they don't even acknowledge Mizuki knowing what it was like during other instances when the frayer makes something happen) and then Tokiko's hologram mentions the nil number so that the frayer can go back and tell her what it was when Ryuki wasn't supposed to.
The diverge route is the true ending because it's the direct a-chronological follow up to the resolution ending just how the resolution ending requires jumping between worlds.

He chooses to go by Date instead of Hayato or Falco, and is pretty uncomfortable with Iris trying to instantly matchmake them back together. Seems clear he wants to be a new person. He also only had a maximum of 3 months from the end of AI1 till his disappearance to reintegrate so coming back after 6 years all ready for Hitomi is very weird.

Saito figured out what was happening and kidnapped Hayato, using a truth serum to find out where the proto machine was.
Because he's a psycho and it sounded fun Saita decided to swap bodies with Hayato inside Rohan, just to see what it's like and swap back.
Something went wrong and they lost their memories in the transfer, Hayato managed to escape in Saito's bod and Saito was stuck in Rohan with his mind in tatters. Which is how Rohan, Saito, and Date come to their current bodies in AI1.

It asks you at the beginning if you're okay with spoilers for 1 and saying yes only turns on a few lines of dialogue and something in a Somnium. Otherwise no matter what the game completely skirts around dealing with any character growth from the 1st or even the events of the game, despite there only being 2 months from the end of AI1 to the start of AI2. Even completely diregarding teh biggest thing from AI1 Date still looks and sounds like Saito, because he "got a mask made since the face is popular with the ladies" in one of the worst things Uchi has ever written, and he's lucky it doesn't matter in the plot or it'd make AI2 his worst story ever.
