Anime writers are often told "don't write anything that your target audience can't think of themselves".
Somewhere in the last 5 years or so that started to extend to everything else because stupid people got the idea that they were in good company and adhering to the above was evidence of a high standard, instead of appealing to the lowest common denominator.
I think this is better than ztd, but my big complaints are that neither Tokiko's big plan nor the actual character stuff is fleshed out enough and too much time is spent on a big evil plan that ultimately gets solved in a big action scene rather than solved in a more personal matter like the first game does.
If the Divergent timeline was longer then I'd be fine with it, but since it's so short, it didn't make it up that much for me even if Tokiko's plan itself was cool as hell.
I like the climax with Saito more and I always found the way Uchikoshi would divorce the antagonist from the end of the game in ZE a bad way of finishing things off. ZTD then did the opposite of this, but Delta was Delta so the problem ended up being something totally different. However for this game it wasn't really as simple as the villain getting killed off ahead of time, and the rocket launch failing being exactly what the plan was and one of the antagonists being aware of this while the other wasn't and welcomed the fact that they were going to be killed without knowing that really elevates this game for me even if I'd still like Saito more than Tearer in a vacuum.
I don't really think the length of the Divergence ending is an issue, I would've liked it if there was more budget put into it, but it's a straight improvement on similar late game heel turns done in the past in terms of length as it is and it achieves what it needs to in one go, rather than successfully setting up a cliffhanger for a future game.
Nothing is worse than ZTD, but Tokiko's plan still doesn't make sense because it means she knows exactly how the player sees things, she knows we will first play as Ryuki and then as Mizuki and then plans the entire thing but HOW can she know we do that? How does she know we wouldn't jump between Ryuki and Mizuki and see the the past first and the future later? Even if she assumed we had some weird limitation where we can only follow one character for an arbitrary period of time, all it would take would be for ONE butthole, just ONE to say something that would make it extremely clear we are jumping through time instead of merely suggesting it for her whole plan to fall apart and the warp and weft get exposed. The only way for her plan to work if for her to be in cahoots with the writer himself and at that point you can just make up whatever bullshit you want I guess.
There is however, and important missing piece of this puzzle: Who is the character possessing Mama? They are the ones who explain the twist to us (and maybe can sense our presence?) and Mizuki wouldn't have thought of going to the Naix building to get the Nil Number if they didn't interfere. Which makes me think that, assuming Uchikoshi even wants to return to this plot point, it could be salvaged depending on who this mysterious being is.
I think Tokiko knows of the timelines because Uru told her. Uru can apparently perceive the different timelines, which is why he drops the "dahlia" & "boat" key phrases in different timelines, specifically for the frayer. These keys ensure that the frayer sees things in the order necessary for the plan to work.
True. He's mentioned to have an incredible grasp on quantum mechanics, so it's most likely as you say. He knows how to logically play the system to enforce a specific path for the frayer.
A way of putting it is she's not working WITH the writer, she's working AGAINST the writer by trying to break their simulation. What she WANTS is for it to become clear that the story isn't being told to the player in the right order, because that exposes where on the existing timeline the seam can occur. This only becomes possible if the player gives a series of impossible prompts that she and her son facilitate and Mama's seances are there to support that end. That's how you actually get access to all the information that leads you to the twist. The way the writer has the simulation set up, there's no risk of that happening on its own because all the characters in the story have personal reasons to hide all the information that would merge the severed timeline. The actual reason why she knows about how the player will see things is the same way she knows what a Frayer even is, because of the shit downloaded into her brain during her attempted suicide. It's not explained in detail who awakened her to all of this but it does follow that it's whoever is talking through Mama, because not only do they also know what a Frayer is but they point you in the right direction of breaking down the simulation several times in the narrative, plus they help you make sense of what the timeline is really like.
Just finished the game. God dammit, why did they go balls deep into the memes? First game was perfectly balanced in that aspect.

Finished the game the other day and I didn't really know how to feel about it, but I definitely liked it. I think both games are equally good but there's definitely things I think AI1 did better. However, I think 2 has some really neat shit going for it especially regarding the Divergence route and meta stuff.
A1's ending was definitely a lot stronger both emotionally and from the fact that it was very grounded for an Uchikoshi game really only relying on the single bodyswap twist to make it happen, so it was a lot tighter and harder to find holes in compared to the second game, where there's at least a couple contrivances required for the two Mizukis twist . However, I noticed some people on here find the flowchart twist to be unsatisfying, which I can kinda get due to the poor presentation of it with Mama just infodumping on (You), but I can sorta forgive it due to the general weird shit surrounding the whole "who the frick is talking through Mama and why do they know who (You) are."
I think it's cool that the flowchart twist gives incentive to see the game through their proper order which is actually pretty satisfying to go through seeing all the shit it fixes/explains. Additionally, the flowchart twist being geared "only towards the player" I liked since Tokiko specifically mentions the whole warp-and-weft shit and the divergence ending is only found when you go back to the exact cross where you talk to her 6 years ago and in the present. Also thought the final question of "do you think giving the literal schizo man mindbreaking knowledge is worth getting your happy ending?" was kino, but I wish the route was just a little longer.

I like the twist conceptually, I just feel like it relies on a lot of "the villain knows things because the author says so" which is never fun to me. Saito knew stuff because he stalked Date, but he was still caught off-guard by Aiba's existence. Tokiko and Tearer just sort of seem to know stuff because... Reasons.
yeah i mostly agree. AI2 is still good but there are some thing that he could have written better. it really is the VLR to AI1's 999 for me.
For me AI1 worked well due to how personal the story, Date was connected to pretty much every character, including the victims, besides Ota and the route payoff were better because of it. Ryuki on the other hand has no real connection to the case beyond his obsessive justice boner and while his schizo tendencies were interesting they never really go all in on them (and annoyingly fix them off screen)
they try to give mizuki some connection to the case by retconning her backstory but again it doesn't have the same impact, the villains goals are far bigger than mizuki and ryuki, unlike AI1 where Saito has a very specific personal reason for fricking with date.

You play as Ryuki for the first 30-40% or so and then it's all Mizuki from then on. Also, Ryuki is easily the shittier protagonist, which sounds crazy.
I actually preferred Ryuki to Mizuki and Bibi. Him being unhinged and Tama (I guess she carries his routes) caring for him were really good. I was really surprised by how good Tama was, now that I think of it.

The Tokiko scene happens 6 eyars before the present, not 3 - how is it "at the intersection of warp and weft"?
Because the very next scene happens in the future, so its where the timeline intersects? What does 3 or 6 years have to do with this?
Anime writers are often told "don't write anything that your target audience can't think of themselves".
Somewhere in the last 5 years or so that started to extend to everything else because stupid people got the idea that they were in good company and adhering to the above was evidence of a high standard, instead of appealing to the lowest common denominator.
I think this is better than ztd, but my big complaints are that neither Tokiko's big plan nor the actual character stuff is fleshed out enough and too much time is spent on a big evil plan that ultimately gets solved in a big action scene rather than solved in a more personal matter like the first game does.
If the Divergent timeline was longer then I'd be fine with it, but since it's so short, it didn't make it up that much for me even if Tokiko's plan itself was cool as hell.
I like the climax with Saito more and I always found the way Uchikoshi would divorce the antagonist from the end of the game in ZE a bad way of finishing things off. ZTD then did the opposite of this, but Delta was Delta so the problem ended up being something totally different. However for this game it wasn't really as simple as the villain getting killed off ahead of time, and the rocket launch failing being exactly what the plan was and one of the antagonists being aware of this while the other wasn't and welcomed the fact that they were going to be killed without knowing that really elevates this game for me even if I'd still like Saito more than Tearer in a vacuum.
I don't really think the length of the Divergence ending is an issue, I would've liked it if there was more budget put into it, but it's a straight improvement on similar late game heel turns done in the past in terms of length as it is and it achieves what it needs to in one go, rather than successfully setting up a cliffhanger for a future game.
Nothing is worse than ZTD, but Tokiko's plan still doesn't make sense because it means she knows exactly how the player sees things, she knows we will first play as Ryuki and then as Mizuki and then plans the entire thing but HOW can she know we do that? How does she know we wouldn't jump between Ryuki and Mizuki and see the the past first and the future later? Even if she assumed we had some weird limitation where we can only follow one character for an arbitrary period of time, all it would take would be for ONE butthole, just ONE to say something that would make it extremely clear we are jumping through time instead of merely suggesting it for her whole plan to fall apart and the warp and weft get exposed. The only way for her plan to work if for her to be in cahoots with the writer himself and at that point you can just make up whatever bullshit you want I guess.
There is however, and important missing piece of this puzzle: Who is the character possessing Mama? They are the ones who explain the twist to us (and maybe can sense our presence?) and Mizuki wouldn't have thought of going to the Naix building to get the Nil Number if they didn't interfere. Which makes me think that, assuming Uchikoshi even wants to return to this plot point, it could be salvaged depending on who this mysterious being is.
I think Tokiko knows of the timelines because Uru told her. Uru can apparently perceive the different timelines, which is why he drops the "dahlia" & "boat" key phrases in different timelines, specifically for the frayer. These keys ensure that the frayer sees things in the order necessary for the plan to work.
He doesn't have to perceive timelines himself to follow a simple "if this, then say boat, if that, say dahlia" instruction
True. He's mentioned to have an incredible grasp on quantum mechanics, so it's most likely as you say. He knows how to logically play the system to enforce a specific path for the frayer.
A way of putting it is she's not working WITH the writer, she's working AGAINST the writer by trying to break their simulation. What she WANTS is for it to become clear that the story isn't being told to the player in the right order, because that exposes where on the existing timeline the seam can occur. This only becomes possible if the player gives a series of impossible prompts that she and her son facilitate and Mama's seances are there to support that end. That's how you actually get access to all the information that leads you to the twist. The way the writer has the simulation set up, there's no risk of that happening on its own because all the characters in the story have personal reasons to hide all the information that would merge the severed timeline. The actual reason why she knows about how the player will see things is the same way she knows what a Frayer even is, because of the shit downloaded into her brain during her attempted suicide. It's not explained in detail who awakened her to all of this but it does follow that it's whoever is talking through Mama, because not only do they also know what a Frayer is but they point you in the right direction of breaking down the simulation several times in the narrative, plus they help you make sense of what the timeline is really like.
Just finished the game. God dammit, why did they go balls deep into the memes? First game was perfectly balanced in that aspect.
It is a good game, but it's not a good AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES game.

Finished the game the other day and I didn't really know how to feel about it, but I definitely liked it. I think both games are equally good but there's definitely things I think AI1 did better. However, I think 2 has some really neat shit going for it especially regarding the Divergence route and meta stuff.
A1's ending was definitely a lot stronger both emotionally and from the fact that it was very grounded for an Uchikoshi game really only relying on the single bodyswap twist to make it happen, so it was a lot tighter and harder to find holes in compared to the second game, where there's at least a couple contrivances required for the two Mizukis twist . However, I noticed some people on here find the flowchart twist to be unsatisfying, which I can kinda get due to the poor presentation of it with Mama just infodumping on (You), but I can sorta forgive it due to the general weird shit surrounding the whole "who the frick is talking through Mama and why do they know who (You) are."
I think it's cool that the flowchart twist gives incentive to see the game through their proper order which is actually pretty satisfying to go through seeing all the shit it fixes/explains. Additionally, the flowchart twist being geared "only towards the player" I liked since Tokiko specifically mentions the whole warp-and-weft shit and the divergence ending is only found when you go back to the exact cross where you talk to her 6 years ago and in the present.
Also thought the final question of "do you think giving the literal schizo man mindbreaking knowledge is worth getting your happy ending?" was kino, but I wish the route was just a little longer.

I like the twist conceptually, I just feel like it relies on a lot of "the villain knows things because the author says so" which is never fun to me. Saito knew stuff because he stalked Date, but he was still caught off-guard by Aiba's existence. Tokiko and Tearer just sort of seem to know stuff because... Reasons.
yeah i mostly agree. AI2 is still good but there are some thing that he could have written better. it really is the VLR to AI1's 999 for me.
For me AI1 worked well due to how personal the story, Date was connected to pretty much every character, including the victims, besides Ota and the route payoff were better because of it. Ryuki on the other hand has no real connection to the case beyond his obsessive justice boner and while his schizo tendencies were interesting they never really go all in on them (and annoyingly fix them off screen)
they try to give mizuki some connection to the case by retconning her backstory but again it doesn't have the same impact, the villains goals are far bigger than mizuki and ryuki, unlike AI1 where Saito has a very specific personal reason for fricking with date.

I actually preferred Ryuki to Mizuki and Bibi. Him being unhinged and Tama (I guess she carries his routes) caring for him were really good. I was really surprised by how good Tama was, now that I think of it.

In most cases the original JP is superior to the dub, but in AI’s case the English version is so obviously superior. Replayed the climax of resolution route in English vs. Japanese and the difference is so stark. First off, you can tell that Falco and Saito have the same VA in JP, and that VA is really incapable of delivering things emotionally or like a psychopath. Whereas Greg Chun is great at sounding like a psychopath, and the moment wherein Falco tells Aiba he hates her is so much more emotionally charged in English because he actually sounds like he’s on the verge of tears and his voice is breaking.
Will listen to counter arguments, but am unlikely to change my mind..
I'm still surprised at how well DC Douglas and Greg Chun both sell Date. It's to the point where, despite the different voices, it sounds like the same person, so to speak.
