Ahhh. I don't get GW - I had the sharts with them IN the 1990s when I was like 14. I think totally tilting at their games from a place of nostalgia might create disappointment / madness, but keeping up with the meta is too damn hard. I think from now on I will just play their boardgames and use the minis for other stuff. It's always their side games that feel the least pressured. I say this as someone with relatively big historical armies, yeah there is cursory research but they don't change year on year.

There is a lot more model to paint for the Fantasy piece but there is a massive jump in technical skill for the Sigmar one. Look at how the lighting is rendered on the knight's armour Vs the elf's sword. The knight doesn't take into account the environment it's in at all. Then you've got the elf's skin that's incredibly well painted. Skin is a really hard thing to get looking that good. The knight's painter doesn't have anything approaching that. The elf is just obviously better painted.

I think HH would have been great if you had weird shit from the get go, Imperial army, beastmen, techno barbarians, maybe even obscure merc Xenos or first contact eldar and orks. But they focused on Herohammer.
AoS just doesn't have a reason to exist. Its essentially a large rounds skirmish game, GW already has better skirmish games. Hell they invented half a dozen new ones spun off AoS.

People quibble,the size of skirmish games, I have seen some with 5 models a side and some with 100 models a side (where 1 model represents 1 soldier, not 10).
AOS was never much of a skirmish game because it was more about the skills stack than interacting with the terrain or having units act independently which I think are more defining features. Also the rules are written in this unreasonably obscurantist way that sucks the flow and pace out if the situation.
They needed to create a senseless disjointed setting so they could keep shitting miniatures to consoom without having to justify anything because the setting is: >bro interconnected realms n shiet, whatever, whenever!
No lore nor background means no need to be coherent with anything.
