Almost all of the levels in that game stretched on way longer than they needed to be, honestly. It was like a 15 hour game and I was relieved to be done because every goddamn level was such a fricking slog.
EA completely fricked over the development of Madness Returns. Its a miracle the game was even somewhat decent with all the budget and time restraints they had, they had to rush and finish it towards the end. Hopefully somebody can purchase it and do justice with the ip but I fricking doubt it.

While the story is pretty nonsensical at the end of the day, the appeal of Alice in Wonderland in general has always been about three major things: the magical fantasy depictions thanks to the Disney adaptation, allegories of the clinically insane, and being horny for it's female protagonist.
The funny thing about Mario is that people like to take the whole concept of it, and revolve it around drug trips. Both Mario and Alice Madness comes from a time when people were in love with the idea of mental disorders and drug use, and writing stories around it.

So long as he has Patreon and releases it for free, McGee can still create a "fan game". Though that one contract ruling of "American McGee can never make another Alice game ever again" is a tad hard to step around. Still, just call it something else. It’ll be hard. A huge part of the Alice games’ novelty is that they’re a dark and twisted version of a well-known and universally beloved children’s story. Unless they can manage to create something with that sort of appeal (very unlikely), fans of the series are not going to be able to get past the fact that it’s just not Alice.

Its balance is really bad because one or two characters very clearly outshine the rest of the crew and when you aren't either of them it's like you're fighting damage sponges. Otherwise it's alright.

The second Alice game wasn't that great. The chink level stretched on far longer than it should have.
Could have ended before the last act with the dollhpuses and it should have had bossfights. The artbook is depressing to read.

Almost all of the levels in that game stretched on way longer than they needed to be, honestly. It was like a 15 hour game and I was relieved to be done because every goddamn level was such a fricking slog.
EA completely fricked over the development of Madness Returns. Its a miracle the game was even somewhat decent with all the budget and time restraints they had, they had to rush and finish it towards the end. Hopefully somebody can purchase it and do justice with the ip but I fricking doubt it.
At this point I'd put more faith in some smaller studio making their own spiritual successor.
