Aliens: Dark Descent

Its pretty fricking good. Basically my only complaint right now is the pathfinding always separating my squad, and the lack of guns to unlock.

              >weren't the xenomorphs basically a bioweapon the Engineers made?
It's highly ambiguous. I think some old comics just had them kind of showing up together in some sort of ancient feud, with the engineers drawn to terminating aliens wherever they show up out of vengeance. The headcanon I get from watching Prometheus is that I expected the engineers to be experimenting with creating life in some attempt at saving their crumbling civilization and possible inability to reproduce, which is why they accidentally/intentionally seed Earth life, why they seem to research/worship xenomorphs that are basically sex monsters, and why they make the goo in an attempt to spur mutation and reproduction in local life. It also explains the contempt they have for humans if they're jealous of our ability to reproduce effortlessly.

It's left open for a reason. The mystery, much like with the Predator, is the point. All we know is how we initially encountered them in Alien.

And then you have trash like

they were made by an android reciting poetry if you are taking the prequels retcon as canon

where they ruin fricking everything by making it about us, once again. The whole idea with the franchise was the premise that there is something unknown out there, completely alien, and extremely deadly. Something that we don't know where it came from, or how it works, or as Ripley so often put it: something that cannot be tamed.

And then they went and retconned it about how an angy flawed doll made by humans made it all happen. Gone is the mystery, the intrigue, the entire message of the original movies. Now it's just another human genetics experiment in space, the most boring, mundane, useless trash there is.

Prometheus & Covenant will never be canon for me. While perfectly ok as standalone movies, they don't hold a candle to the original Alien movies.

hold on you, that's original shit. there were no engineers, but you could presume that the pilot wasn't an unique individual, so there's that, and the ship was a bomber or well, at least it was factually carrying the eggs somewhere on purpose, they had the fog field to prevent activation, so there's nothing in the post you replied to that's part of revisionist bs at all

              Nope.

A race of sentient albinos created humanity, and other worlds, through terraforming done with DNA seeding with black goo. Humanity created robots, went to find their makers, found their makers, makers hated humans and robots. Upset robot created aliens using human DNA and goo. Sent aliens on albino space ship to human space. Humans found aliens = Alien movie 1.

              Anonymous

The black goo is a bioweapon they use that aliens come from but the one we see in Alien is actually David's creation. That's why it's biomechanical and not sinewy like the alien in Covenant, David perfected it. David would've faced the surviving Engineers on LV-426 in the third movie.

It's because we struggle to create concepts that are completely detached from our own living reality. We make aliens slimey and buglike because it's the farthest removed type of living creature that we humans know about.

Anyway, take a look at pic related. None of the species in pic related share a class with each other, but all of them have almost duplicate body plans regardless.
Life that evolved on other planets would look different, but not as much as you'd think.
The humanoid form works, and intelligent life would obviously need opposable thumbs, as well as large craniums to house large brains.
Maybe other forms work too but to go as far from the humanoid form as possible simply for the sake of being different is silly.

So the lore explaining the Xenomorphs is a couple of different ideas in one IP.

In one set of lore the xenomorphs are a species on an insanely brutal planet and fit into the food chain but once exposed to humans they become an invasive species with an incredibly successful rate. And they were introduced accidentally to humanity by the "space jockeys" which is an unidentified intelligent race that the lore never really explores.

In the other lore they are basically biological weapons created by high technology not understood by humans.

In neither set of the lore are aliens just beasts. You are a homosexual, and please refrain from complaining about what you don't understand.

Think it was the first Aliens comics that established a Xenomorph home planet where local Xenos are bigger and more muscular in general because their facehuggers jumped on way bigger creatures than humans. The comic also had the Xenomorph queen having the ability to cause this weird psychosis disease that formed human cults.

Genestealers and Aliens comic came around the same time in late 80's, so not sure if Aliens comic ripped off the Genestealer cult, or W40K ripped the Aliens comic cult for their Genestealer cult.

Earth Hive didn't have xenomorphs on their homeworld being any different from the norm. It actually implied there was an ecosystem in place that kept Xenomorphs in check and that they were worried about the stuff that kept them from totally conquering the planet like they do on Earth in the same novel/comic.

Blame James Cameron for turning them into giant space termites. Original Alien writer's concept reportedly involved their lifecycle ending with them being cultured intelligent life capable of building societies, the dangerous rogue we see in the movie is basically a juvenile delinquent trying to sort his teen hormones out to mature into something more refined.

Discounting the novels or other toe-in media that makes the Alien homeworld a hell hole planet, there's no reason why they wouldn't eventually develop into an intelligent civilisation if we left them alone long enough. They are smart enough to operate human tech to some extent and are basically superhuman in terms of biological process perfection.

Time and time again I see 'sci'-fi depict aliens in a grotesque/.demonic way. It's so stupid.

you act as though xenomorphs are in anyway the rule of how humanity has thought about alien life, there's been plenty of media about more advanced and benevolent aliens

seems more like you're a misanthrope ready to throw shade at humanity when nature here on earth demonstrates perfectly well that everything is flawed, not just humanity, violence and cruelty are the rule you smug tard

It's entirely based on where they're from and what resources exist on their planet for them to grow from. Can't really have a carbon based lifeform on a planet with no carbon, for example.

They're pretty intelligent, you seen the comic where they have humans form a cult around xenos or the other comic where their queen is infertile so she abducts humans to get them pregnant and throws the pregnant women into a pool that digests them to make new aliens.

      Alien fanboy here
The Xenomorph origianl concept, beyond the Necronomicon IV painting, was that its a complete xeno bioform from us. A concept so "alien" and agressive that only exists to violently reproduce. Its meant to represent the utmost unknown of space, and even esoteric vibes and themes were thrown when thinking about the now called Xenomorph. Comics like Dark Horse's Outburst quadrilogy depicts it more of an idea, the reflection of mankinds sins, and the unforgiveness of existence outside our known spaces. Xenos are terrifying shit, and they call to humans too. The "Dragon" and devils of the cold like in Aline 3 and its og scripts, very far unknowns of what life can become.

But Camerons Aliens turned them into space bugs. I mean i do love Aliens too, a frickton as well. But the original ideas that float around the mythology of the Xenomorph are cooler.

Read Alien Omnibus and Aliens Labyrinth. Thank me later

Sorry but the original idea sounds absolutely dumb.

      >you go from mindless, irrational psycho carnivorous killer to adult who lives a peaceful and scholarly life

Their life cycle is full on parasitic, humans at least are omnivorous and can subsist on plants, while the alien life form reproduces through host killing parasitic cycle and is 100% formed to be a carnivorous superpredator (with acidic blood). How the frick do they magically learn to read and do fingerpainting all of a sudden..it take as lot of belief/bullshit to make anyone take that concept seriously.

I do think this makes sense from an anthropomorphic perspective, chap in Alien is basically raised without parental figures in an environment that treats him like an enemy and wants him dead. Consider the shit teens get up to, especially when they dont have parents to supervise and make sure they arent becoming psychos. Consider how most famous serial killers and psychopaths have some childhood neglect and lack of parents. Also they're aliens, I dont have to explain shit, if thats how they work then thats how they work.

Lots of bugs, like the antlion, go from ravenous predators in one stage of their life cycle to peaceful pollin eaters in the next stage. If the xenomorph homeworld had species suitable as livestock then I don't see how this idea is any more implausible than humans creating civilization while being predators. The aggression could just be because they grow so fast and need tons of protein. If an adult xenomorph is capable of tard wrangling the young aggressive ones until they reach an age where they become capable of learning, it could work. Obviously this lore concept is obsolete since nobody after the original movie ever revisited it, but it's not as facially stupid as you think.

I kinda like this honestly, it's at least much more interesting than just saying they were bioweapons which got out of hand. It doesn't even contradict Aliens, because the Hadley's Hope xenomorphs were weeks/months old at most, without the years presumably necessary to physically and mentally mature all the way. It adds a bit of a tragic element, that these things are essentially feral children running around attacking people because of base instinct, and getting killed for it in turn. Even the one from the first film, which people say acted more intelligent and malicious than the ones from Aliens, could instead be contextualized as more of a curious baby investigating its environment, playing a bit rough with fragile toys. There's a spook factor as well, contemplating whatever force was capable of wiping out the original xenomorph civilization, whether it was some kind of mysterious stellar phenomena or something else entirely. I like the detail with it losing appendages as it ages, brings to mind some of the concept art.

        >If it's hostile, you kill it
Doesn't matter, even if xenos mature into 'normal' species they are still invasive parasites whose life cycle demands a living creature be sacrificed for even one of them to be born. Perhaps they were wiped out by someone who actually saw them for what they are.

That page specifies it's a "lower animal, the equivalent of an Alien cow." Nobody advocates for the extinction of the human race because we have to slaughter and consume other creatures on a mass-scale to keep ourselves going.

Most all of O'Bannon's script and concept ideas were thrown out early in development. That he was given total writing credit was down to union and corporate politicking.
The only reason the film ever got made was that one scene with the chestburster. That was the single 'brilliant moment' that justified to everyone that this film had to be made, no matter how much was changed.

i'm hoping this leads to something like a spiritual successor to the AVP extinction down the line. or at least an expansion from the perspective of the aliens, imagine starting off with just a facehugger and having to build up your hive from scratch to infest the entire planet.

How does the player 'squad' work in this game? Like it seems instead of controlling individual units your team is a single blob that moves around, or is it like Cannon Fodder where you could split your squad up into different segments to move around and cover each other.

Aliens 3 is where the movie franchise went to shit, being terribly written nonsense that killed off surviving character from 2 offscreen.
It just got worse and worse from there (including all the AvP movies), before somehow managing to get EVEN WORSE than that with the moron canon-poisoning 'prequels' made by the hackiest of hack directors getting old and senile.

The alien franchise is in such a weird stage for me.
The original 2 movies were so strong that everything that goes to far into a new direction seems like fanfiction to me not even worth taking serious, all the new ideas and designs just don't seem authetic enough.
But on the other hand HR Giggers original designs definitely had enough room for new and bigger ideas then just a movie about alien bugs eating people so it would be cool to have a story where they are treated as the next step in humanity as well.
I guess i just can't take any story serious where Aliens are treated as anything more then just a aggressive animal after seeing them slaughtered in mass during Aliens 2.

Yes, they're led by a synth (multiple copies) of a dead mad WY scientist who got facehugged and worshipped the Engineers/xenos.

I don't like the final mission of this which has your normal squad of soldiers evac and then you do a scripted final mission with preset characters where the devs try to make it feel like a movie but it's too generic and boring and ruins the appeal of using generics which you've been doing the entire game
Should have copied XCOM and made the final mission happen with your actual soldiers

      Anonymous

Is it at least easy and quick to get through compared to normal missions? Basically a victory lap?

        >Basically a victory lap?
Yea it's pretty much this but I really didn't like it because it took me out of the moment way too hard.
You basically do this super long and hard mission with your actual squad and head back to evac but then out of nowhere you have to deal with the preset characters stealing the spotlight so they can do their victory lap mission and nothing even happens because they spend most of it running away and two characters have cutscene deaths so the last person escorts the VIP to the evac but it's a shitty escape segment as barely any xenomorphs spawn because you only have 1 soldier to control.
It would've been so much more fun to have this segment be done with your actual soldiers and make it be a desperate escape segment where you get the biggest swarm of xenomorphs while escorting the VIP so it's a real make or break situation that doesn't just completely take you out of the moment and fun
The current last mission feels so out of place for me because of how the entire game uses the generics.

I find it hard to believe that 4-5 Colonial Marines can undertake missions, sounds bullshit tbh because in the movie not only they were ambushed and got mogged immediately but the remaining survivors struggled mightily and were holed up in one location.

Just redeployed to continue the mission in Dead Hills, and so far I'm enjoying it. It's definitely got some flaws, and starts way too slow, but I'm surprised with how good the game is for essentially coming out of nowhere (for me at least).

My only real complaints is the missions feel way too long (maybe because it starts pretty easy, so it's dragging a little), and the lack of any sort of OST. Somebody modding in the Alien Trilogy soundtrack would be great.

Basically this. I liked Prometheus and even Covenant to an extent because the engineers, androids and themes about life and creation are cool, but still not nearly as cool as weird fossil-elephant-chair man, which detracts a lot from the original movie. I wish they wouldve kept the engineers and space jockeys as separate civilizations.

Funny fact about Alien is that Dan O'Bannon created and pushed the movie to direct himself, wrote the script, made visuals and effects, and was the guy who contacted Giger since both worked on Jodos Dune, but wasnt let to direct the movie by 20th Century Fox. Then thy scrambled through directors and no one wanted to do it. They forced Ridley Scott, and he also didnt wanted to, and arrived halfway production.

When the movie was a hit Ridley took all the credit for it. Then all Ridleys career start to kinda make sense that he's been a guy that falls upwards mostly.

20thCF are morons though as usual (and were forever) and didnt knew what to do next. Then Cameron arrived and presented them, what he called a million dollar idea, and wrote on a whiteboard "Alien$". He had an idea and script but wanted to direct it. 20th suits were always scrambling and said sure, do whatever. The rest is history.

When Blomkamp was going to do an actual Aliens 2, Ridley comes out of nowhere claiming he's the dad of the franchise and wants to do a slop. Blomkamp gets shafted like O Bannon did basically in pro of Ridleys favor, and Prometheus slop is made. Its a superb work on visual effects, in a superb example of horrible writing, pacing and stupidity. Nepo hollywisraeliness at its finest. Jesus its so stupid. Covenant is even more pretentious.

So true Alien 3 never ever. I liked Alien3 tho. Guilty pleasure

Prometheus is a dogshit script filmed beautifully. Covenant is a dumb script filmed beautifully. They did alright things for the lore, even if they are crappy movies and they kinda miss the grungy dark dystopian tone of original films.

It’s good but the enemy variety is shit.

You fight drones, warriors, runners, crushers, praetorians, facehuggers and queens. That’s it. I get they wanted to stay faithful to the movies but they could’ve easily introduced more xeno types.

I never really understood the appeal of Isolation honestly. The alien is almost too omnipresent, I cant walk 10 feet in the station after the medical section without tripping over it and having to lock myself in a cupboard, repeatedly, because the alien never just wants to frick off, even if it hasnt seen me. I also dont feel like the limited combat and crafting add much to the gameplay. I'm a huge Amnesia TDD fan with like 50 hours in it, that game understood that the monster encounters need to be spaced out to give the story time to develop and let the player breathe and focus on the atmosphere and progression.

NTA and I get the idea behind it but it's a really fricking weird concept for a parasitic species that can produce at most one drone per intact human. Zerg rushing is incredibly unsuitable to Xeno biology. Aliens was a great movie but damn the concept was pretty moronic

the game doesn't zerg your squad with xenos all the time, usually you'll only encounter 1-2
then on primary objectives the game revolves around holding in place to defend against zerg rushing against a few dozen xenomorphs
at max aggro the most corpses i've seen were like 50 which isn't a lot considering that most areas in the game were highly populated

Just started but no its not true from what Im seeing, just got the game and your squad always walks in with one mag in the gun and 1 backup per soldier, and you can take upgrade ammo pouches to bring more. If you run out of ammo you can pull out, wait a day, then redeploy to get the minimum again. There's also another upgrade that replenishes ammo to deployment minimum when you rest by sealing your squad in a room. I can see all this within 2 deployments, there might be more options later
