All the Pillars of Eternity and Pathfinder games are 20-50 gigs each. Big, but understandable. They're basically the standard of current gen RPGs.

Baldur's Gate 3 is 142gb. The same size as Pillars 1, Pillars 2, Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous combined. How the FRICK does anyone defend this bloat?

Is Pillars of Eternity good to go for a newcomer to the genre ? I recently discovered Pathfinder : Kingsmaker with all the DLCs, and I'm having a blast. Never played any "old school" RPG before, not even the old Diablos.

Does POE have cringy romances / coomer-tier cucking shit as in BG3 ?

It is ok. The graphics and music are nice. Combat is very restrictive compare to Pathfinder and the story is dreadfully dull. I think it is worth playing.

It's a decent but very bland game, I'd tell you to do BG1+2 before that, or even Tyranny which was way more fun but feels unfinished.

Thank you all, maybe I'll go for BG1 and 2 before anything else

      >Pillars of Eternity
No. it is extremely verbose and and the story is mediocre, you're either gonna like it or hate it. I personally hate it. Baldur's Gate 3 is unironically a better game in every way, go play Planescape or some of the other infinity games

It's not as bad as anons make it out to be. The combat complaints are mainly due to Sawyer making it so basically every class is viable at the cost of min-maxxing potential. So no pre buffing autism like the Pathfinder games. Story complaints are fair, the world is pretty unimaginative expect for the soul metaphysics. Then again, idk anyone who plays BG for the story. Music and atmosphere are great.

The second game, Deadfire, really fixes alot of the issues of the first one. Combat was improved, the Caribbean setting is one of the best RPGs have to offer. Interesting factions that are Obsidian's staples. They focused far more on faction play and lore over narrative. There is pozzed shit in the games though, but you can mostly ignore it.

They are no world class CRPGs, but you will have alot of fun with them, unless you're a hardcore DnD system autist.

Yes, RPG players love childish wish fulfillment and will do anything to avoid having to make hard decisions, what else is new?

            >hard decisions
abstention in these cases isn't from difficulty, it's from a lack of interest. a failure of narrative persuasion.

The shieldbearers of st. ecgla or whatever. Closest thing to a traditional paladin, imo. Maybe the kind wayfarers are a close second.

Which one? Baldur's Gate 2 has a very interesting story with a good personal villain. BG1 has a straightforward story that works well to set up an adventure. I actually don't remember the main story for Pillars, even though I played through it twice. It is that much of a nothingburger. I do remember the edgy bad guy though.

Do BG1 and 2 have interesting story elements? Yes they do. Does that mean that the boomers who have been playing BG2 for a decade play it for the story? No, they play it cause they think the gameplay is great.

Also the story of PoE1 is basically just BG1 but with souls and adra instead of iron.

OP here, thank you for your insight. Looking at gameplays on youtube I think I prefer the more polished ans modern look on POE2 than old school BG (pretty superficial I know). But do I need to finish POE1 to understand the second opus ?

I got pretty bored of PoE1 and wasn't able to finish it despite trying on three separate occasions. The story and world were just so boring. I didn't mind the combat and some of the characters were great though.

Would I like Poe2 at all? Do I actually need to play PoE1 to understand the story in 2?

          >OP here, thank you for your insight.
No p man. Yeah PoE1 is mandatory. A shit load carries over, from main quest choices to side quest choices as well(save transfer). Also, you need to understand the story of the first for the second to make sense.

Yes it is, and it's also pretty good.
There is a reason why pillars has better user-scores compared to closest competition.

disregard all the seething posters with a hateboner for pillars who literally live for the rush of shitting on people for liking a game they don't like
They are miserable and hate when people have fun

I'm just going to use this thread to post this: How can you Black folk enjoy a game with such a bland setting and story? Half of the fun of crpgs to me is exploring the world and enjoying the art direction, different places and monsters but this game has none of it and people praise it a lot.

Keep in mind that a bad story does not equal an unenjoyable story. BG1 story is bad, but it's enjoyable and has the feel of a fantasy pup short story, PoE has a dull story and a dull, uninspire setting, it just feels a chore to play because without these 2 elements for me it just feels like i'm cliking shit on screen.

I used to dislike Forgotten Realms until I understand its potential for small, contained stories rather than the grand, epic storytelling everyone is accostumed too.

I simply refuse to play anything that takes 100+ GB. AAA cinematic slop is not worth playing anyway, and graphics pretty much peaked years ago.

Because BG3 is all flash and no substance. It's a movie game where they wasted gorrillians of dollars on mocap and cinematics and neglected any coherency within the plot, story, or characters. Actual slop.

In one of the old Neal Stephenson novels... Zodiac I think? Anyway, there was a drug nerd character who postulated "Sangamon's Principle" which was that the quality of a recreational substance was inversely proportionate to the size of its molecule. Thus, the highest quality drug was nitrous oxide, N2O.
