Don't give them ideas, they would frick the game big time, inject nu-politics into it, muddle up search results and split the mod makers. SimCity 4 is where it should be.
Maybe I'll post the region I started last week if this thread doesn't die by 7:30 PST.
Here's a very poor rendering of the one I did earlier this year.
Side note: While I was typing this reply, I realized that SimCity 4 is older than I am.(January vs June of '03). Wow.
I don't use SPAM, i use CAM farms. It gives them more growth stages but CAM is a troublesome mod since it takes over the entire growth mechanic and is compatible with nothing else. I've have nothing but trouble since i CAMed.
Back a little later than I intended, on my PC this time.
Here's the region. I went in and flattened the Timbuktu landscape (got the big tiles via SC4Mapper). Got Residential Halver, Industry Doubler, and Services Doubler to make the RCI distribution more realistic, but as a consequence I seem to have infinite money.
what is so great about this game compared to cities:skylines or any other city builder
Less bloat features, closer to realistic city simulation, runs far better with SC4Launcher, and most importantly, REGION PLAY. No other big city builder has EVER come close to the region system of SimCity 4.
>Makes me kinda wish for a SC4-style game with multiplayer that DOESN'T suck.
You can actually kind of play SC4 multiplayer via LAN or virtual LAN network like Hamachi. But it does kind of suck.
I don't remember the exact steps, but basically instead of having the game use your regular Documents/SimCity 4 folder (with all your regions, plugins, etc.) you make a shortcut that points to a SimCity 4 folder in a shared folder on a network. If everyone makes a shortcut referencing that same folder, you essentially get a shared region.
The problem is you can't play the same cities at the same time, and saves can occasionally get fricked (save often and backup your city if necessary) because of syncing issues across the network.
Pic related, we did it with Hamachi back in the day.
Each square is a city tile. But with the regions system instead of being a tile in a void with connections to unseen neighbors you can actually build a connecting city.
You can create a wall-to-wall megalopolis, or a metropolitan area, or an island archipelago.
The real problem with the regions system is there's no easy way to edit the terrain on the regional level meaning you're going to be forever reconciling map edges, and the size of the cells seems random.
With the tile sizes. you can edit them with ms paint. Just make it all the same color as the largest one. I think blue. You can also make the region bigger. Just have to make the tile size you want the right amount of pixels. Also make sure it is the exact right shade.
>tfw got a new laptop amd can't get SC4 to run
How hard is it to make a city builder? I don't know shit about making games but I can't imagine there's much besides spreadsheets under the hood.
I tried to play skylines, but I just hate it, it feels like wearing someone elses underpants.
Well, for one you actually build a city. cities:skylines is just a glorified traffic simulator and as for the city part you can royally frick anything and everything with no real permanent consequences, the whole city aspect might very well be a visual doodad
What always pissed me off about this game is how you can't build on the edges of any tile because it fricks up the terrain alignment with other cities.
>a city builder >should always be >an economic simulator
The purpose of a city in an economy is to consume products.
Most city builders handwave one of the most important parts of a city's economy - the waste. Sewage, rubbish...
There's no unemployment or welfare system either.
Even Cities: Skylines is pretending everyone can work in an office, that there are no cleaners, that there is no underclass, just a middleclass, that LOVES to use buses. I'm not even sure it has an upper class.
City builders are and should always be about building a magical land of towering skyscrapers where nothing goes wrong except for an occasional meteor shower or UFO attack.
I know that's a characteristic of that game, but I was told that SimCity 4 was similar with a whole expansion dedicated to it. If it's not the case I'll have to give the game a chance instead of just playing the earlier entries
simcity is about interrelatedness of population, its age structure, housing, business, and industry. their levels, inflows and outflows. 2nd, 3rd order effects of actions. how things respond to stress and shocks. the same mechanisms that govern everything in real life, from commodity markets to societies, and ecosystems.
and there's the way people pay it, "buildings go up, cars make vroom"
>its age structure, housing, business, and industry. their levels, inflows and outflows. 2nd, 3rd order effects of actions. how things respond to stress and shocks. the same mechanisms that govern everything in real life, from commodity markets to societies, and ecosystems.
I wish to God that SC4 had an option for these mechanisms

someone really needs to just scrape all the sc4 modding websites and consolidate them in one spot. They're all going to go down eventually, like those lost japanese mods.
Mods that are never re-uploaded after one Nip site went down because SC community wants to prevent all sorts of compilation packs and uploads that arent created by their original creator.

It’s the same reason why hunting down all those assets for custom lots is such pain in the ass.

Theyre better about it this past year. SC4d went down and now theyre re-uploading the 50 fricking prop and texture dependencies into single packs.
My hope is that EA somehow releases a x64 bit support patch to help stability. Star Wars Empire At War got a x64 patch 16 years after release just two months ago.
Are you guys all on old versions or where did you get yours from ? Playes this game decades ago, super comfy, but forget everything about it apart from trying to make ghettos.
Can I make port cities, asthetic airport areas etc ? I have logistics autism.
I tried the demo and it has a lot of potential. I like how it mixes SimCity and the Sims. Will definitely keep an eye on it and I plan on playing the demo some more.
>grid only
A true successor needs lots in weird shapes fitting to different road angles.
Curvy roads are in the roadmap if I recall correctly.
Love making comfy small towns. I treat the game as a sort of miniature diorama model. I play with money cheats and focus on building a well designed (probably badly) environment.
such a great game. a modern upgrade to this game would sell so many copies
Don't give them ideas, they would frick the game big time, inject nu-politics into it, muddle up search results and split the mod makers. SimCity 4 is where it should be.
You mean like they did with C&C Remastered?
I want it to work on modern systems
It works fine on modern systems
with the launcher? I get crashes every hour. I don't have the specific launcher doe
True, BUT:
Instead of moping, you can just...play SimCity 4.
Maybe I'll post the region I started last week if this thread doesn't die by 7:30 PST.

SimCity 4 thread anybody?
Sure but i've got a gun in my pocket and i want to shoot at simcity 4.
kino shots, anons. great work.
What mod is that theater building to the top right?

how's Krautchan nowadays
>how's Krautchan nowadays
It's been dead for a few years.

so you can only simulate one little section of your city at a time? sounds like cope design

for me its not having to have super highways connecting to some off screen magicland
The good thing is nothing is stopping you from playing SC4 today.

No one is forcing you to press that button
ss3000 is where it's at. a city builder should always be an economic simulator first and foremost.
The best soundtrack of any city builder as well, by far.
SNES Sim City OST was comfy as frick
>a city builder should always be an economic simulator first and foremost.
I don't think any game has even a basic economic system.
>sim city is an economic simulator
well now you're just trolling
>a city builder

I remember getting cities skylines expecting some comfy sim city vibes only to get filtered by road autism a few hours in
I was given the impression that SimCity 4 was designed around road autism so I avoided it because that sounded extremely boring. Did I get memed on?
That's Cities: Skylines.
I know that's a characteristic of that game, but I was told that SimCity 4 was similar with a whole expansion dedicated to it. If it's not the case I'll have to give the game a chance instead of just playing the earlier entries
Rush Hour was all about transportation in general, not just roads.
It also had new buildings like higher capacity schools and cop shops

Post your favourite Simcity OST.
?si=K8PTGAYvpAegYF9s
Now I want HD sound in Sim City 4.
No contest.
Legit this used to scare me as kid and idk why, cuz as an adult this kinda slaps in a Fallout sorta way.
Forgot to post mine:
These tracks are just so unbelievably groovy so I couldn't just pick one.
?si=fWHoYfLK8OfZkXsW
Sometimes it hard to contain the feels when listening to the soundtrack
Did Simcity 2014 get better or is it still crap?
A lot of the bugs got patched in the year after release but the shit gameplay never got updated since Maxis got nuked.
do you use SPAM? i like SPAM, farms are cool
I don't use SPAM, i use CAM farms. It gives them more growth stages but CAM is a troublesome mod since it takes over the entire growth mechanic and is compatible with nothing else. I've have nothing but trouble since i CAMed.
those moomoos look adorable
Cam would be better if it had all 500 buildings and all 5000000 dependables in a single fricking ZIP/exe.
Maybe it does but 5 years ago it didn't.
dependables
This pisses me off so much. You have to stroke the wiener of every dependancy owner by paying tribute to his dead forum. Frick.

This image is so full of SOVL, it's making my eyes bleed from how well put together it is.

redpill me on CAM, is it worth the slog installation that puts linux systems to shame?
I'll just write a new one is lisp.
1. not strategy
2. frostpunk and cities: skylines are good
Bump.
comfy city anon
tried city skylines, but sim city 4 is just better in every aspect. i come back to it every time i feel the itch for city building.
nice work anon
mid
cities skylines 1 is better
fr fr
No cap?
Reminder this is all vanilla.
Here's the download link for the region

If only that and some qol updates like custom building trees
Are you guys all on old versions or where did you get yours from ? Playes this game decades ago, super comfy, but forget everything about it apart from trying to make ghettos.

Is there any mod for Artdeco or Neoclassical architecture? (or any other non typical)

I had so much fun releasing disasters on the cities when i was a kid 🙂
So I take you one of those people who loved to make guest torture machines in RCT? You're right, so did I, I'm that person.
>tfw listening to the SimCity 4 soundtrack while designing a new region map
Sim City 2000 will always be the best. no one can change my mind
Anyone got a guide on how to run this on a modern computer? Trying to load it as is just causes endless crashes for me.
You need to run it with the command line argument "-CPUCount:1".
Buy a Mac :^)
Isn't IOS notoriously bad with breaking backwards compatibility? No way in hell a 20-year-old program without developer support runs today.
Is SC4 worth laying today? I heard that Skylines are better.
>Is SC4 worth laying today? I heard that Skylines are better.
Never listen to another word from whomever told you Skylines is better.
What? Still butthurt from Parakek's latest and greatest traffic simulator?
traffic simulator is an understatement.
First game I had installed on my first PC, definitely holds a special place in my heart
Is this game worth playing? Does it have modernization mods?
I ask the same question
