I just checked a wiki, apparently she'll avoid hitting you if you're 2HP or lower (her attacks do 3-4 damage) or if you've spared her 11 times.
But I was wrong when I said there's no indication at all that sparing does something, there are more periods each time, before she starts saying different things

I'm super late to this discussion, but I think the bullshit crit is meant to get the player to reload from a previous save to avoid killing her and then get the flowey knowing what you did dialogue.
The Underground only settles into uneasy anarchy if you kill all the bosses, but don't go full genocide.
There's quite a number of neutral endings where people are understanding.
Also Mettaton only goes off the deep end if he ends up king, besides Burger pants everybody including all of his employees love him.

If they all held humans in this image then why don't we see more overtly hostile monsters? Most of the time they're not even aware they're attacking you in combat, and most of the overworld sprite ones are completely passive.
Sure it would be against the spirit of the game's message, but you can't have it both ways. They can't glorify a child murderer while being okay with befriending said child themselves. Her entire fight is meant to make you feel guilty. If you kill her in self defense she slowly fades out, then when she dies she melts horribly due to determination. You cannot spare her once she starts to fade even if you feel bad about it iirc.
Even if she "starts to go easy" (Which other monsters do, and do it proper by avoiding to hit you or being unable to kill you at all) she still goes through with it, and I doubt she feels any guilt at all. Her endings all point towards her being extremely revengeful and violent.

Since i realized that Undertale doesn't actually take place in 201X I figured it had to be way, way later than that since that's when the chara cutscenes are supposed to be taking place, but I don't think anything ever gives you anything to get such a specific date for when the games' taking place.
Asgore's calander has a day in 201x circled on it, with Chara specifying this is when she fell in the Genocide route.
Statements about it being a hundred years since Toriel was outside of the ruins are also made by her and Sans. It also seems to have been some time since the humans needed time to fall so UT takes place 100 years after Chara fell, or 211x.
Papyrus and Undyne have 91 and 95 in their Undernet handles, probably being their birth years of 2091 and 2095.
You could ignore those numbers, but all that allows you to do is more their births forwards in time, making them younger and younger, which doesn't make sense
