There is no bottom barrel on a SPAS 12. That tube you see is the magazine for the shells.
It's not a real life SPAS 12. It just sort of looks like one.

HL1 shotgun is almost Doom 3 shotgun level of bad if you play on hard mode. The shotgun becomes a glorified melee weapon.
The shotgun is designed to be a close range gun, especially the double barrel alternatate fire. It definitely becomes a pea shooter at even medium distances. I think Valve made it that way so people could use the nice variety of weapons.

SMG is decent on hard until you deplete all of your ammo.
The SMG is the worst weapon on hard because it deals so little damage, it's only useful for killing headcrabs
Nah, it has great DPS but burns though ammo quickly. And the grenade launcher is very useful. The worst weapon is the Hive Hand, but it at least has the niche of firing around corners. And snarks because they are very situational.
DPS is useless when you objective is killing the enemy before he kills you

It's HL1, -you- create the conditions of engagement in 99% of fights. Since everyone has perfect aim, the faster you kill the better. TAU > all.
The game hands you a lot of explosives. Personally I use up all my grenades and remote mines whenever I see the HECU troopers.

Sure you do, if you've already played the game 100 of times, but at that point, you just toss nades around corners to avoid engaging them to begin with.

I love damage/health autism, especially in a /k/ thread.
If I were to rework the guns, I would take away the double shot, but give one shot nine pellets. The SMG would be fine if the silencer actually worked. Otherwise, it should not have a damage penalty over the glock, but give the HECU 100 health to compensate.
HECU can tank a fricking double barreled shot to the face on hard and you can't switch your weapon during the pumping animation like in HL2.
The smg is better in every way.

They kinda can't but you need to be really close and you to hit specifically the face part, not the helmet, which I believe is protective in the same way shiny parts of Agrunt armor's are (40% less bullet damage).
HECU has 80 HP while the shotgun only deals 60 damage. It is only strong enough to one shot a vortigaunt at melee range.
1+2 is objectively faster than sustained SMG fire, especially if you're not an aimlet and skip the first shot
they will usually retreat after catching an m2. that's when you hit them in the back with the smg. you are fricked if you click on their head and they have a helmet tho

I like Doom 3's shotgun too. It's underpowered and the range is way too short but has a cool design and nice feedback. If it were a little stronger in game it'd be perfect.
Doom 3 shotgun can consistently down a hell knight in three shots if you aim for the head. You can only do that at melee range but Doom 3 level design centered around CQC anyway.
not enough people understand D3's shotgun is extremely powerful, you just have to be point blank. and that's intentional, it's a risk/reward thing.
instead people try to snipe with it and then call it shit.
I like it since it's just Quake 3 shotgun.
Nevertheless, I think the Doom 3 shotgun got rightfully shat on. The enemy shotgun marine can consistently hit you across the corridor because their shotgun is akin to the original Doom shotgun.

I'm not sure how it's been changed, but in Payday 2, you had to "buy the stock" to the Spas-12 in order to use it. It was like $40,000 to just unfold the fricking stock

The early lever safety's had a defect that over time would wear down a latch on the hammer itself and eventually would drop the hammer upon taking the safety off. For this reason, it's recommended to use the bolt unlock/quick deploy safety tab on the left-hand side of the trigger guard, since that will also disconnect the trigger. If you have a later model, it might have a more typical crossbolt style safety which from what I've heard has no issues.

There's probably a way to engineer some fancy loading system to load each barrel, but at that point you may as well make a semi-auto or a regular over under shotgun

Syphon Filter let you pump the shotgun whenever you like but it didn't really do anything outside of making a cool sound.
Gunman Chronicles lets you shoot 1, 2, 3, or 4 shells at once for its shotgun, along with a tight / medium / wide spread. Some of the weapon modes are pretty creative.

Shotguns were either plain old pump-actions like a Remington 870, or generic double-barrels. Spas-12 looked heavy, mean, exotic, and industrial.

Wrong, the spas 12 is notorious for being picky with what shells will cycle it in semi, plus it's heavy as all frick.
It does look cool that being said, doesn't matter the Benelli M2 and M3 super 90 made the spas 12 and 15 irrelevant.

I think it was because the double barrel shotguns in fps were getting REALLY popular back in the day , from doom to quake and etc. Both in single player and in online deathmatches.
Valve wanted to HL to be revolutionary and "not like the other games", but also be familiar to other gamers of the period. So they mashed and mixed a single pump action and double barrel shotgun function into a one, impossible irl gun.
TFC which actually directly comes from Quake strangely enough does seperate a single shot and double shot shotguns into 2 weapons.

Marathon 2 is good about this. Shit is OP as frick and there's a few levels where ammo literally gets dropped on you as you run around slaughtering everything, but outside of those times its rare. Best of both worlds.

They probably didn't know that the thing under the barrel is the magazine, not another barrel.
Valve in particular had a lot of noguns which is why you had shit like pulling on the forward assist as if it was the charging handle.
