Am I the only one excited about this? Things seem surprisingly quiet about the game even though it's coming out in two months.
It seems heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger (even got the composer on-board), and is a distant prequel to The Messenger (same devs). I wasn't interested in Octopath much a lot of it is my dislike for the artstyle though, but this seems to scratch an itch I didn't think needed scratching at this point.

i'll play it if ppl say the story is good
Yeah.
I really liked some things about the world of The Messenger, but the dialogue had this weird rhythm and clunkiness to it, as if it was written by an ESL. There weren't overt grammatical and structural errors or anything, but the phrasing and memeing just felt... off in a very specific way.
I've never seen anyone else complain about this ever though, so it might just be me.
If they're planning to do a full-scale story-heavy JRPG they definitely need to kick their writing up a notch, even if the ideas themselves are good.
I filled out my Kickstarter the other day. Getting ready for it. Getting the record and art book. Hope it's good.
I know exactly what you mean. Game needed an editor.
no you are not, anon. I'm gonna buy and play this day one. loved the messenger and the demo was really good too.
I actually forgot about there was a demo. It's on Steam, right? Is the battle system fun?
yes, it's on steam. the battle system is really good in my opinion, it's like you said a chrono trigger like with a spin. there are special attacks which require you to push the button at the right timing to attack consecutive times in a row which is really fun. Just try it out to see if it's what you are looking for.
>retro inspired
>indie
red flags
How is indie a red flag though?
What do you play aside from a couple good Japanese AAA releases a year?
I understand the retro inspired thing though, but only because people abused it and misused it for so long. I love good pixel art, and it can even stay very simple and still be good (provided you do some basic things like a proper color balance)
>doomposting
just try it out for yourself and then return with a real opinion, dude
>defends a game that hasn't even been released yet
>tumblr character design
The tumblr face on the girl is so unfortunate, considering how the game itself looks gorgeous and the last game had none of that shit.
It doesn't seem like intentional pandering, so I just don't understand why they haven't touched up this key art for three years, she looks like a fat slob here.
There is a demo.
I just checked and it seems the demo is Switch exclusive, which is a dumb move.
oh, you're right. I forgot. Maybe later today on next fest. exclusive demos are dumb, I give you that
>It doesn't seem like intentional pandering
definitely not. the lead writer is a fan of jordan peterson. the blue hair is just to visually contrast the orange.(complimentary colors)
It's not the hair the bothers me (the sun/moon motif is clear, simple, and actually cool), but the face itself. It has this weird angle that makes the girl look like she's fat but trying to take a fake picture for her Tinder profile, which just looks very Tumblr. She looks normal in-game as well, so I really don't understand what they were thinking with promotional art. The Messenger had none of those problems.
I see what you are saying now. yeah, western artist trying faux anime frick up a lot. that head angle is really tough to get right in that style.
>tumblr face
Not sure what that means, she’s almost showing her crotch
dude I know the devs and played the demo. you just looked at the picture in OP and went full on doomposting. next fest is starting today, do yourself a favor and play some games, before complaining
>has mitsuda doing some tracks
ok
>characters are hugo from suikoden 3, zoe quinn (pbuh), and a fat mutt
>developers are frenchie leafs
>tendie exclusive
more like sea of fails
>developers are frenchie leafs
Don't care, The Messenger was good.
>tendie exclusive
So you're moronic and lack basic reading comprehension, got it.
can I play it on PC right now? no. can I play it on switch right now? yes. therefore, switch exclusive. kys
this is the game with the webm of 1 really basic skill taking 13 seconds of animation time right? frick that shit. it's too much of a waste of time.
No idea. Do you have the webm?
I hope that's not true because the thing I liked about Chrono Trigger is its brisk pacing. It's probably the game's biggest reediming quality.
found it in the archives.
yep it was this trash. I'm not touching this shit with a ten foot pole.
As far as I understand, it's not a "basic" attack, but something more akin to a Triple Tech, your super move. Normal attacks don't have an action element to them, unlike something like Mario and Luigi where each attack does.
I don't care. 13 seconds is garbage and 13 seconds for something that looks that bad is tremendous garbage.
Understandable.
I liked kicking shells in M&L and this seems similar so I don't think I'll find it too annoying. I hope there is a harder version where you don't waste your time with wind up, though.
Looks like yet another FF6 wannabe that is going to """fix""" the combat by making every trash encounter last 10 minutes and spends hours on some shitty story nobody cares about because for some reason nobody remembers that FF6 was a non stop roller-coaster ride of set piece sequences and not some wordy drama
it looks like generic normie bait and the devs fell for the timed input combat meme. also only superficially chrono trigger like, i see no time travel but rather "go around and fight each of le elemental bosses" type story. the one thing they got right was trying to steal fishing from BoF3
>Am I the only one excited about this?
Nope, I'm excited as hell.
I also understand that bringing it up too much on Ganker which just start the normal Ganker shitpost cycle if a game is too popular, so I just don't bring the game up here.
The promo art and designs makes it look generic and don’t really grab my attention, unlike Chrono Trigger which had the benefit of having Akira Toriyama on board back when his art was still SOVL
>Chrono Trigger
>Sharp standout logo
>Frogman
>Sexy cavewoman
>Cute nerd and robot
>Redhead goku
>Sea of stars
>generic title that also looks like some edited free font
>blue hair tumblr girl
>some white hair brown guy
>3rd party member in trailer is just some fat brown guy
I agree. I love how SoS looks in-game, but all the presentation is just working to undermine it completely.
I never liked Toriyama's faces though, but I do see the appeal.
The messenger was great and this also seems of similar if not better quality
So yeah, I’ll play it
>Hey ever wanted to play chrono trigger but with my homosexual calarts designs? WELL GET IN LINE GAYMERS!
>no upload without the seagulls/wave sounds
This reminded me that I never played that free Messenger DLC. I probably should
>/^Am I the only one excited about this*/i;op:only
that should do it right, this kind of very organic thread seems to happen pretty frequently.
Yeah I understand how this sounds. I am just suprised at lack of discussion despite the previous game being so critically acclaimed and even loved on Ganker to an extent
Can you name some aside from some obvious retro titles? Is Shadow Hearts one of them?
It's on my steam wishlist but I have dozens of universally acclaimed hundred-hour jrpgs to play before this indie one
The devs fricked over their backers by doing a deal to have the demo on Switch before Steam when it was originally Steam only, so the backers couldn't see the game until last minute. Shady red flag behaviour.
I don’t reckon
Nintendo probably paid for it
I don't play western videogames anymore simply because they're full of woke crap and bad 'murica irreverent writing. This one seems promising but it won't escape either flaw.
>Black person protagonist
Dropped
None of them are Black folk, are you blind or moronic?
even if they were, what's wrong with Black person protagonists?
Black folk are cool
>Black folk are cool
only when they stay within their lanes
>Things seem surprisingly quiet
They had an update a week or two ago where they stated that the game was content complete.
I don't trust western indie devs with a jrpg esque stories. The last one i've played turned out to be a massive burning trainwreck.
Why is it bad?
Got it in my backlog
>MC was a jerk in his past life
>so MC kills himself, sorry for being mean to you in the past life m'lady *tips fedora*
Childishly edgy, poorly written (one character in particular is just an obvious writer's pet despite being an absolutely despicable piece of shit), involves actual blacked cuckoldry, and with a Shingeki no Kyojin tier ending.
The "redemption" of the story is hilariously stupid. The one that was "redeemed" isn't even alive anymore and the one "that will redeem himself in the future" is like you said, a fricking garbage piece of shit and him "redeeming himself" doesn't change much.
What's worse, i kinda see some value in "we were awful to each other in the previous life but let us just build our relationships anew because we're different people now" story. But it didn't even try going in that direction.
But that's exactly what it was?
Combat system never progresses, difficulty curve is flat throughout.
Interracial cucking as the key of the main characters' backstory.
>Combat system never progresses
Even worse, they introduce a second combat system that is just flat out worse than the on foot mechanics.
The best JRPG story of the last 30 years is literally western-made.
Uh last I checked Strange Journey was made in Japan
SJ is a great game with a great atmosphere, but the story is nothing special, especially as part of an existing series.
Play False Skies although it focuses more on the gameplay and class system despite having a fairly progressing story.
>tfw almost bought it, was on my backlog
Holy shit dodged a bullet there. God I would have been so seething if I had paid actual money and played the game only to reach that ending.
One of the devs for this game makes weekly shill threads for it on /vrpg/. You should tell him what you think about it. He'll 100% accuse you of being a Crystal Project shill though, he fricking hates that game for whatever reason.
I mean if I were to make such a game all by myself I'd either be crazy or lose my mind in the process so makes sense
>accuse you of being a Crystal Project shill though, he fricking hates that game for whatever reason
Not him but I could see that dude not liking that game due to the amount of times it was brought up after release, and still is somewhat. While I hate the overuse of shill by newbies, the 'fan's'(?) calling it by the dev's name's game and rarely ever just calling the goddamn game by its actual name, was fricking weird and fishy.
Bro remember the False Skies shill?
>like SaGa if it wasn't shit
Yes actually lol I posted in that thread and didn't think the OP was a shill but he sure pissed someone off who spammed up the thread because of the SaGa commentary.
I played a bunch of FS and it was enjoyable
>didn't think the OP was a shill
100% was.
I disagree nor do I see the relevance in this context. You can even search the archives: across all vidya boards, FS has ~1/4th the mentions that "x's game" has. FS is never discussed and one thread is not a "shill": you're likely the exact type I was describing earlier, considering most of that thread was sperging out against the SaGa critique.
From what I recall about its release, it funnily happened because CP's dev put his real name on the steam page, so people were answering to positive posts by using his name and calling him a shill.
Which in turn made anons keep using the name because it was funny
Andrew defense force is here, defending people named Andrew because they like the name Andrew.
thanks for the workshop update btw Andrew
>game has a sizable demo
>is clear about what it is and isn't
>well-liked
>people liking it and joking about it must be shills
I really liked the story in this game. Was overall pretty good but I fricking hated the gem system. Fricking rng hell to get anything decent and farming them sucks fuking ass
It's a western made indie JRPG so the sprite work will be the only impressive part, gameplay will suck and story will be full of 2020s western liberalism.
Ngl first time I even hear about it.
The Messenger was pretty cool
Maybe this one will turn out okay though
I don't know what you want people to be saying, it's not out. I've just been waiting on it.
The promo art is bad but the character designs look good when, you know, they're using an actual artstyle.
I really have no idea why they used that art, because the game looks great.
