AMDs 7800XT dominating sales

>AMD reportedly dominated the GPU sales in Q1 2024 and managed to claw market share away from NVIDIA according to 3DCenter’s latest GPU sales report. The publication compiled the Mindfactory GPU sales data provided by TechEpiphany and found out that Radeon cards made up 53.9% of all boards sold on Mindfactory in Q1 2024 vs 45% for NVIDIA and a meager 1.1% for Intel.

>AMD enjoying the bulk of GPU sales is a role reversal from Q1 2023 where NVIDIA commanded a 52.6% share in total sales vs Team Red’s 47%. As a whole, AMD sold a combined 24,510 pieces while NVIDIA moved 20,420 units. However, the overall sales were down 2,320 units in Q1’24 vs Q1’23.

    >Looking at individual cards, the RX 7800 XT was the top-selling card on Mindfactory in Q1 with 6.975 units followed by the RTX 4060 TI with 3,575 units. As a comparison, the retailer sold 2,510 RTX 4070 and 3,250 RTX 4070 SUPER cards, putting the RX 7800 XT ahead of the former by an almost 3-to-1 margin.

    >The RX 7800 XT selling more than the RTX 4070 makes sense if we look at it from a value perspective. The Radeon GPU not only offers comparable gaming performance but also brings 4 GB more VRAM. VRAM capacity is becoming an increasingly important factor for GPU purchases as modern games continue to drive up the requirement.

Perhaps most importantly, the RX 7800 XT costs noticeably less than the RTX 4070. For instance, the cheapest RX 7800 XT on Amazon is currently retailing for $499 while the RTX 4070 is going for $539.

The Nvidia Super refresh helped them gain the lead back for a week but it seems like this was only a temporary effect rather than a trendchange.

NVIDIA doesn't really care about the gamer market while selling shovels in the AI hype bubble.

Neither do Nvidia customers. There are tons of complains about Nvidias driver recently but those people would never switch to AMD - even with Nvidia selling them shitty underpowered hardware that needs DLSS in order to reach acceptable framerates- they will still stick with team green cause they have been successfully indoctrinated by the leather jacket man

53.9% vs 45% doesn't really seem to be domination to me.

The 7800 XT is dominanting. Not AMD.
AMD is in fact only slightly above Nvidia in recent sales.

As you can see Nvidia sales are fairly equal across all price ranges - AMD meanwhile has the 7800 XT as the big seller and all cheaper models sell a lot worse.

you have to factor in that Nvidia has like 90% total market share to realize how big this is.

it's a good thing too cause it means Nvidia has to care again for the 5000 series.

This. We actually need some competition in the field and sadly Intel has failed to provide that so far.

Is the 7800 really such a good deal? Or it's just the lack of better options?

      Anonymous

      Mostly the latter.
The 7800 XT is basically just a 6800 with less power consuption and RDNA3 features. Not really a big throw forward.
But it's 500 bucks and with that the cheapest way way to 16 GB VRAM. The next best GPU with 16 GB is the 4070 Super which is 300-400 bucks more expensive.

Basically required for 4K gaming. Unneeded if you’ll still be playing at 1080p, 1440p can squeeze by with 8gb for most games though at least 12gb would be more comfortable.

Not right now but some games like Cyberpunk or Hogwarts already need more than 12 GB VRAM even at 1080p, Atleast if you wanna max them out.
You can do fine with 12 GB in 99% of all cases but considering that those big titles are popular - some really fear that 12 GB will not be enough in 1-2 years and many don't want to spend more than 500 bucks on a brandnew GPU that can't even max out games on 1080p

          Anonymous

Yes. You can get by with 12GB right now, but even 16GB will be cutting it close soon.
I would hold off since Q4 2024 will see new GPUs, just to see what VRAM the new models come with. Worst case scenario, some older models see some modest price drops, and you buy a current model for $10-20 less.

While it's good that AMD is taking more of the much needed userspace, creating competition, it ultimately doesn't matter. NoVideo is all in on AI and it's an absolute gold rush. And Leatherman is selling shovels and pickaxes. It's gonna be 'Blue' vs 'Red' soon.

      >It's gonna be 'Blue' vs 'Red' soon.
Blue can hardly move CPUs, and as good as their GPUs are, it's 1.1%. They're not catching up any time soon.
Also, leather jacket man no longer cares about the gaming market. With the AI rush, he is selling over 3x to businesses, and making a killing. The more you buy, the more you save bro. He's gonna keep pushing up GPU prices and fleece you And AMD will offer comparable performance at slightly better price/perf ratio. Nvidia is basically abandoning the gaming market for bigger profit, and are letting mindshare carry them. Which it will. Easily.

Nobody besides Nvidia marketers gives a shit about DLSS

Normalgays just look at the price and vram number
      Bigger number = better
If you tell them about software features and processing speeds their heads explode

Call me a marketer, but after using DLSS at "4K" for past 2 years it's hard to consider a GPU without DLSS. It's usually the most stable upscaling.
Right now FSR2 can be acceptable alternative, but it's just not as good. FSR2 from my testing often required at least Balanced mode to be somewhat comparable to DLSS Performance at 4K.

          Anonymous

Not saying DLSS doesn't have any value. I am saying that most people simply don't give a shit.

CPU? They look at core count, price and speed.
GPU? They look at price and VRAM

Anything beyond that is nerd shit for them

      Anonymous

DLSS is just a cope for idiots who bought a GPU too weak for native res.
You'd have to be a fricking moron to buy an RTX 3050 over an RX 6600, the latter is like 30% faster for the same price, nevermind vs. that shitty 6 GB 3050 they released not that long ago, which is maybe slightly faster than a GTX 1060.

So I've been debating on this for months since I want to do a PC build. Assuming I only have $1000 to spend on a card.
Is the Radeon RX 7900 XTX really so bad that i'm better off getting a Nvidia RTX 4070 for the same price even though it has half the memory?
Has anybody tried it and verified it is shit in terms of performance. How can it be that much worse? I know it doesn't have cuda and the most things aren't optimized for it but still.

I'd wait for Q4.You should be able to find the 7900XTX for less than $1000 in the US, though.
