>fewer guns than the original and OF >lower enemy variety >less interesting locations and fighting arenas >choke full with these dumb jigsaw "puzzles" that were always the weakest par of HL
Blue Shift is fricking terrible and I have no desire to ever replay it after a single playthrough while I replay HL1 almost yearly.
I replay the HL1 "trilogy" every May.
Blue Shift is kind of lacking compared to Opposing Force, but I feel the plot is better and the level design is more in line with HL and makes more sense than the other expansion.
Those extra guns in OF are meaningless fluff that hurt the balance of the original arsenal and they took away the marines which are the only fun enemy to fight in HL anyway. Dont know what people see in OF that game is garbage.
>Those extra guns in OF are meaningless fluff
Frick you. It's thinking like this that stripped all the extra guns out of HL2 and its episodes. 2 whole episodes went by and not a single new gun introduced. I don't care if you give the player 2 guns with the same role like a sniper rifle and a crossbow. It's fun if it feels different. >they took away the marines which are the only fun enemy to fight in HL
Did you even play the game? That's literally why we fought Black Ops. Functionally identical. But actually smarter because you can no longer snipe their teammates and have them not fricking notice, because OpFor actually tuned up the AI to be smarter.
I don't want more weapons. I want every weapon to have a meaningful purpose. And you're devaluing existing weapons by adding on more and more shit that's just basically better in every way. I couldn't care less about having a gazillion guns. >That's literally why we fought Black Ops
And they suck and aren't half as cool or fun to fight as the marines. The marines were big and and pretty visible making them easy fun targets to fight. Black Ops are shit. Brings the whole game down.
>I don't want more weapons.
Well frick you, because I do. >Magnum >Wrench >SAW >Sniper >Teleport Gun >Spore Launcher >Barnacle
If you didn't squeeze some fun out of these, you are a joyless c**t. >you're devaluing existing weapons
You already had a whole FPS campaign to get your fill of the old ones. Half-Life 1 was long as frick. You don't NEED to squeeze anything more out of them. Good expansions need new guns. It's why HL2 episodes fricking sucked so bad. >And they suck and aren't half as cool or fun to fight as the marines. >"T-they wear black! Nevermind that they use the same guns and tactics and AI! This somehow changes everything!"
Jesus H. Christ. For the record, most of them are in well lit areas, so it's not like they were actually hard to see. Every bit as bad at blending in as arctic camo in the desert.
I don't play Half Life for a ratchet and clank showcase of guns. Half those weapons are one off gimmicks and the other half just replace already existing guns. So in any practical sense the arsenal isn't even bigger either if you're just ignoring half of it anyway. Black ops suck. And a lot of your time is slowing escorting your shit marines to places and listening to them talk about crap.

You already cornered yourself b***hing about HECU marines no longer being enemies completely tipping your hand you didn't know about Black Ops. No I played the game and it's fricking garbage and waving around shiny weapons that make your monkey brain go wooooo when the original arsenal was fine as it was doesn't change that. And the black ops are terrible to fight. And it has the worst final boss in an fps. And the marines are stupid.

Yeah, that's right. I like new fun toys. I guess you're just a c**t who would rather shame a game for having actual new content by calling it "Ratchet and Clank" (as if that's a bad thing) than enjoy yourself. Do you ever stop to question your own motives? Is this just because "I heard Gearbox sux and now I have to join in, even on their most praised game!" I bet it is. >the black ops are terrible to fight.
You keep saying this but haven't given a single example how they differ from fighting HECU. Oh, except that HECU are "more visible" despite Blops wearing jet black in a bright fricking desert, like that doesn't catch your eye. Try again.
I don't care, the half-life expansions are the only gearbox games i've played. I hate them for turning the half-life story into a mess with their marines bullshit. I only care about Half-Life.
>BOO HOO THEY CALLED HECU MARINES BOO HOO
You don't have a single justifiable reason for being such a homosexual over this. "Soldier" is a generic fricking term, who cares if they're army or Marines? They definitely are not supposed to be National fricking Guard given how overzealous they are.

I'm quoting you, you dribbling crybaby. That's a direct quote.
My main complaint is that they marketed it as letting you play the bad guys but then pussy out and knock Shepherd out in the prologue so he has an excuse not to shoot Black Mesa personnel, and for whatever reason every single one you encounter knows this and just treats him like Gordon if he was a bit of a c**t.
Basically essentially this.
Blue Shift tried to be a more grounded and "adventury" HL experience, and it suffered for it. Still not terrible, but it's just so basic and neutered. No, wait, I just remembered it cost full retail price back in the day. Frick this game.
Basically essentially this.

My guess is that Gearbox were working with technical limitations that they didn't have for Op4.
Remember that BS was supposed to be part of the Dreamcast release of Half-Life, and Gearbox weren't doing the port itself (that was handled by Captivation Digital). The whole project was troubled from the start, so telling Captivation to add any new features compared to the original HL engine probably wasn't possible. When the port was cancelled they then just said "frick it" and released what they'd done.
At least that's my theory.
wow I really love it when my shotgun fires a blinding splash of sparks that obscures half the screen like it's a fricking spot welder every time I pull the trigger that's not massively annoying at all I love the video game modding community very cool
It is good, the problem is he thought it was so good every FPS was going to copy it and he didn't really criticise it, probably in fear of being "debunked" by zoomer fanboy channels like Midnight and Mayo who get triggered by people not agreeing with them that it's the greatest game ever made.
Not that one. Loading zones are fricking tiny (it's super obvious too, if you ever try to coop it). The action never escalates so you're fighting Houndeyes until the second to last battle. And the final encounter is literally just a couple squads of HECU marines. And did you like any of the additions made by OpFor? Well it isn't here. Enjoy your non-powered armor and standard issue sidearm.
It started out so strong. The maintenance areas where the headcrab zombies are treated with much more dread like an actual survival horror game is great. But then they started slacking off and had you retread the same areas sometimes as much as 3 times. I get it, mapping is time consuming. But you can't lean that hard on places you've already been. Really killed it for me near the end.
I find it ironic people claim this is the best Half Life.
The series was popular because it took the usual FPS story at the time (teleporter accident, base in chaos) but changed it up so much (you're not the big dumb marine, you're one of the scientists, and you get to experience the setting before the frick up)
Then the expansion comes along which is essentially what if Half Life was exactly like the other FPS series out there and you've got people (mostly zoomers) wishing that was the main game.
I think you're over analysing it. People like Opposing Force because there's more enemies and weapons (same reason people don't like HL2 as much as HL1)
I disagree. HL was special because it was a single narrative with no cutscene breaks from your perspective. OpFor does the same thing, and even weaves it into the existing story, crossing paths with Gordon. And Shephard is isolated from his unit in the very beginning, working more like a free agent until he comes across squads later in the game. It's barely a classical "tacticool story of generic marine"
None of them because they're all made by known scammers who commit false advertising and fraud.
Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
Artifact is not never good. It is excellent. Artifact’s expansions on Dota 2’s setting and lore were amazing. Peak soul. There were times I actually felt like I was commanding the epic fantasy battlefield the cards depicted. I’d never had that feeling from a card game before, not even Magic.
When I looked at the menu, saw Jolixia’s caravan in the distance at night while the music took me, for a fleeting moment it felt like I was home.
Honestly, it was a good attempt, but they fricked up the Marines pretty hard.
HL1 Marines only fired while crouching, which added a tactical layer to combat. BM Marines run around firing endlessly, and as a result feel dumber and are more annoying to fight.
They also don't have that cool radio voice anymore.
Oh, and Xen started off better until Interloper when it became just as bad as the original. Great fricking job.
>The Hazardous Environment Combat Unit, abbreviated as HECU, is a United States Marine Corps Special Forces Unit that is featured prominently in Half-Life and its expansions.

It's easier to suspend my disbelief by considering Op4 not canon. Way too many things point to them being the army.
Also, i've always thought they were based on these guys from the X-Files.
It has the Duke Nukem Forever anachronistic feeling due to taking so long to develop, some parts of it feel modern while other parts feel dated. It's weird. It also ruined Xen, I always liked the original and they just missed the point of it conpletely.
I love the beginning. I liked the way armor pickups worked. But it just feels like a fan made map pack. The weapon and enemy variety sucks and the set pieces aren't anything special. Played it twice, no desire to ever do it again.
I do genuinely prefer Blue Shift over Opposing Force. I found OF's level design to be beyond abysmal in comparison to HL1 and BS and I didn't really give a shit about new guns. I'll admit Race X was neat though.
I wish Blue Shift was longer though, it just ends so damn quickly.
>frick with on a rail, cutting most of it >frick with Xen, ruin its aesthetic, add a bunch of shit that wasn't there
Still like BM but the devs seem to have forgotten their place.
Why do people think Gearbox games are so unfunny? I never played any of them outside of opposing force and it didn't have a whole lot of comedy in it, but what little there was was good. Did something happen?
Gearbox didn't go hard into "ironic humor" until Borderlands, as far as I know. If you want to know why people hate their writing, play one of those. Or don't. It's awful.
Only played Borderlands 2, which is a decent enough timewaster, but the writing really is that bad. Astonishingly bad. It's incomprehensible that anyone could have thought that it would be funny.
I don't know about 1, but 2 is straight awful. The friend I was playing it with was wondering why I wasn't laughing while not laughing himself. The "humor" is very disconnected from what is actually happening in game. You can tell the writers were told to come up with funny lines for each character without context.
Let me tell you something about jokes. Writing them is hard. So instead of doing that, Gearbox went full on with overstating the obvious, laughing to themselves about stupid, basic game observations (but self aware, haha!), and characters who will annoy the piss out of you talking in annoying voices... because that's the joke!.
Given more shit then it should but its still not the best
Half Life Source

not half life
you're right, it's so good, calling it 'half-life' is an insult to Minerva's quality.

For me anyway:
HL1

HL2

>Downfall
minerva wasn't that good.

Not even close. Cool setting but that's all.
Gunman is kind of chintzy. The skill level of the maps is really quite low. The alt fire modes are cool but the combat isn't great even with them.

Huh, you're correct

This is the correct assessment. I'm always amazed that so few people seem to be bothered by OpFor's subpar level design
The original is still king
I can't go back to the original after Black Mesa
Funny you should post that image, because the HEVcrab Zombie was really the only cool idea they had. And it's the only part of their Xen I cared for.
I hated that there were only like 3 of them and they die so quickly anyway.

Gearbox didn't go hard into "ironic humor" until Borderlands, as far as I know. If you want to know why people hate their writing, play one of those. Or don't. It's awful.
Surely, it can be that bad r-right ?
It can. And don't call me Shirley.

No half life game is good
Blue shift is so boring that I almost fell asleep. Original Half life is much better.
